Have you felt like you were being watched? Or, like something just wasn't... quite right? Feel that mysterious chill subdue a room or perhaps experience the unexplainable?
I assure you, friends, there is an explanation. Beyond our world lies another—several, actually—that most never see. It is our connection to these other worlds where the explanation for these unnatural events lies.
Spirits, Ghosts, Apparitions, Demons, and even beings beyond mortal comprehension do exist and in fact often call these other worlds home. The center of all worlds is a nexus that sorts the vast, complex network of countless worlds and even entire planes of existence. This nexus is a world in and of itself known simply as the Spirit World. It is lead by a powerful Demon known as King Emna whom eons ago won the seat of the Spirit World through a vicious war with the other Worlds. Since then, he has established powerful barriers and created delicate bureaucracies that keep these worlds in check and avoid the spiritual imbalances which once led the realms to war in the first place. Even with all of these checks in place, however, there are times when entities like the aforementioned spiritual beings find their way into a world where they ought not be; this, most often, is the explanation for all those events you have often pondered.
How does the Spirit World then keep things running smoothly, then, if these beings do leak through or find their way into existence? That, my friends, is a well-guarded secret that I will let you in on. Alongside enlisted psychics and other rare mortals are an elite few known as Spirit Detectives. Men and women trained to utilize the energy of their soul and harness techniques to track down and resolve spiritual issues, be it through peace or violence. These Detectives create a net that protects the human world from the unnatural phenomenon created by spiritual entities and keeps the eternal balance of the Spirit World in check.
Interested, perhaps?
Wonderful! So, what do you have to do to become a Spirit Detective? The first step is simple:
Die.
Spirit Detectives are mortals that serve King Enma, most often by contract and often later willingly, to preserve safety in the Human World and maintain the balance among the different realms. Almost all Spirit Detectives share a set of traits: resurrection via a Spirit Beast, a Woken Soul, and training to use their Reiki. This triad exists as most Spirit Detectives are carefully selected by Grim Reapers or Shinigami to become Spirit Detectives and undergo the same stages before becoming true Spirit Detectives.
The first step is most often to die. Very few Spirit Detectives ever manage to Awaken their soul and be trained in Reiki on their own. Most often, a potential Spirit Detective is selected long before they die by one of many Shinigami. If approved by Koenma, son of King Enma and head of the Spirit Detectives, the Shinigami will place a seed deep within the selected mortal from the fruit of a Tree of Life found only in the Spirit World. Death by most means—including many acute illnesses—can be reversed or halted during this time, although these seeds cannot save drastic trauma or dismemberment. A Seed of Life will also keep a body alive without a soul for approximately ten-to-twelve days depending on the cause of death.
It is at this time that a selected mortal must make the first step in becoming a Spirit Detective: agreeing to the terms and conditions. At this time, a mortal is provided with Koenma's Contract outlining the conditions of being brought back to life and becoming a Spirit Detective. They are also informed of all of the risks, including those that come with the process.
If a mortal wishes to pass on, they may without falter and be judged without penalization. If they choose a second chance at life as a contracted Spirit Detective, they must first remain a disembodied soul and feed their Spirit Energy to a Golden Egg from the Spirit World. This egg will hatch a beast according to the energy given off by the soul of whomever holds it. What hatches from the egg will be a direct representation of the soul that fed it as it was during this time. This process can vary in duration depending on the energy of the mortal soul, generally taking two to seven days. If the soul is too weak to birth a Spirit Beast, it will fade and the egg will die. If the soul is wicked or cruel, the egg will hatch a terrible beast that will consume the soul of the mortal that birthed it and must later be slain. These are the risks a mortal is warned of.
If the soul is both strong and good (relatively speaking), then it will birth a Spirit Beast. This Spirit Beast will act as their spiritual anchor during the ritual performed by the Shinigami to tether their soul back to their still-living body. The ritual that tethers a soul to a body also acts as the second trait: awakening a soul. A Woken Soul is one that had shed its mortal limitations. This can be done with intense training and devotion, often requiring monks to spend years if not decades to do so. A Woken Soul taps into the unbridled potential of humanity, allowing them to begin training their Reiki and advancing any secondary traits they may have had. This leads to the final trait of a Spirit Detective: the ability to control their Reiki. Reiki is the widely-accepted word for life energy. It's the fundamental building block of almost all living things on a spiritual level and is a necessity for Spirit Detectives to master as it is required to interact with most Spiritual entities as well as become powerful enough to combat substantial threats.
A Spirit Detective that has been resurrected is often assigned a mentor—either a senior or retired Spirit Detective—to train them often alongside others. These fledgling Spirit Detectives are considered a Juniors and receive a special set of entry-level tools to help them in their journey: A Spirit Mirror - a communication device that allows the user to contact anyone with a Spirit whose Reiki they remember; A Concentration Ring - a seven-pronged, brass, studded ring that passively collects and concentrates Reiki; A Psychic Spyglass - a simple lens that allows the user to easily perceive Spiritual anomalies and magic with their eyes; A Mystic Whistle - a simple whistle that can project an annoying distress call to the spiritually aware; and, lastly, 3 more Seeds of Life that can heal a user or restore their Reiki nearly instantly at this early stage.
Humanity can be a fickle, but powerful thing. The life energy—Reiki—of humans has the greatest potential for growth of all souls that inevitably travel through the Spirit World. Humans can manifest their potential through psychic abilities, elemental auras, and even magical talent; all without their souls ever being truly awake to the spiritual world. It is this potential that makes humanity prime candidates for Spirit Detectives and as Daiken Masters.
Reiki is the energy that comprises all souls and most apparitions of the Human World, however, few ever recognize or even more utilize this energy to any substantial degree. For a Spirit Detective, it is a necessary part of their role: most apparitions cannot be interacted without the use of Reiki and such is often the duty of a Spirit Detective. Junior Spirit Detectives are provided with tools to help in this process; generally a beginner and intermediate kit. These tools assist them until they learn the skills and techniques required of Senior Spirit Detectives, and likely develop their own abilities as well. The Reiki of any human is processed through their soul, resulting in their manifested abilities often being personal. While the initial stages of Reiki training are often very similar, the intermediate stages revolve around developing these personal traits.
Reiki can manifest as one of five primary types: Enhancement - the strengthening of the body or objects; Emission - detaching or projecting Reiki; Manipulation - controlling animate or inanimate things; Transmutation - changing the quality of Reiki or other objects; Conjuration - creating objects from Reiki. Of these five types exist various triads based on the primary type. For example, the triad of Enhancement includes Emission and Transmutation. Reiki is strongest when it is used within its primary type and is weakest if not impossible to use outside of its triad. It is incredibly rare for any human to have a special type or unique triad, but not unheard of. Intermediate training revolves around developing Reiki control around these triads to develop unique abilities.
Beyond the intermediate level, a Spirit Detective can opt to train their other traits if they so possess them, but the final and often considered most powerful training a Spirit Detective can undergo is that from a Daiken master.
Daiken—the way of the Five Great Fists—is a set of five martial arts passed down through cultures and generations for nearly as long as Humanity has been around. Daiken Masters are considered some of the most powerful humans of the Mortal World. Daiken is the origin of most Spirit Detective techniques and virtually all Spirit Detective training is considered a crude, elementary variant of one of the five Daiken styles. The abilities of Daiken are unique and highly vied for, ranging from healing wounds, reverting to an individuals prime, taking on demonic traits, to literally cleansing demonic energy. These abilities are often more refined, powerful, and specific than any natural ability a Spirit Detective may develop, thus why Daiken is often considered the next step for Spirit Detectives seeking more power. Daiken Masters, such as the Legendary Genkai—three-time winner of the infamous Dark Tournament for Team Enma. Daiken Masters, however, are notoriously picky with their trainees, generally only accepting a handful if any at a time and often releasing them from their training for trivial reasoning.
Not all Spirit Detectives wish to advance as far as Daiken. Such abilities are rarely if ever required to perform the duties of a Spirit Detective.
After a soul is awoken, it can potentially take on one of two new traits. The first is commonly referred to as a Beast Soul while the other is known as an Aura. Unlike Reiki Manifestations and even Daiken, these two traits can only be gained at a point of awakening. These two traits have the potential to impact Spiritual development so greatly that two of the Daiken are derived purely for and from those with these styles. Those with Beast Souls may walk the path of the Kemono no Ken and those with Aura can walk the path of the Honō no Ken if they so choose. Each of these traits is tied directly to the soul of the mortal with them and thus every piece of Reiki they ever mold or control.
A Beast Soul is one that has deep connection and most often literally part of itself embedded in a Spirit Beast. This happens often with Spirit Detectives as the ritual of tethering is done with the Spirit Beast grown from their own soul. Because the Spirit Beasts often have part of a Human Soul within them, they are generally considerably stronger and more intelligent than most normal Spirit Beasts. As they develop, their Soul often grows more and more human and their power more and more tied to the Reiki of their owner. Their personalities also become more independent of their owner. Those with Beast Souls tend to possess the highest reserves of Reiki and have access to a unique and powerful subset of abilities as their Spirit Beast can take a name and weapon form for them to fight with. It would be a far stretch to consider this fighting two people, but just as unfair to consider it one.
A Spirit Beast often has abilities a Spirit Detective does not and upon taking a name and weapon form manifests these abilities further. Together, a Spirit Beast and its owner can link their souls and become even more powerful, resulting in seriously dangerous and powerful techniques. A Spirit Beast can be a large, powerful ally in battle, but their real power comes from the devastating, unique abilities and raw increase in power that comes with being utilized as a living weapon. The bond between a Spirit Beast and its owner can be so strong that they can communicate telepathically and at times even feel the pain and emotions of the other. While this can be a large drawback, it can also be one of their greatest assets in when working in union.
An Auramancer is an entirely different style of trait. Aura refers to a specific type of Reiki radiated passively from the body that must first learned to be controlled. The unique quality of Aura is that an Aura takes on one of four basic elements: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. Unlike other Reiki Users, Auramancers have a natural affinity for all five types of Reiki Manifestation, but such is exclusive to their element. Most notably, Auramancers are incredibly good at the Conjuration, Emission and Manipulation of their Element, but they do not have the same drawbacks if they manage to Enhance their bodies or Transmute objects to take on similar qualities. Auramancers may also manipulate the natural variants of their element and even change their form, often to even greater effect than what they can conjure. Auramancers are often very tied to their environment.
The control over Aura is directly tied to the control over emotions, mind-state and creativity of its user. It is more than just the mind, however. Auramancers tend to require a martial art or form of physical exercise as their radiated aura must be worked into their body to achieve its maximum effect. The aura radiated from Auramancers cannot be immediately controlled by other Reiki users, but its form is unmistakable. Fire Aura appears like a burning aura around the user, Earth Aura is crystalline, Wind Aura tends to be massive and fill a large area, and Water Aura flows with the user fluidly. It is extremely difficult if not impossible for an Auramancer to hide their aura, meaning their abilities come with significant drawbacks.
Spirit Beasts and Auramancers both possess the ability to perceive and understand Reiki slightly different than most other Reiki users. Spirit Beasts tend to be able to sense it with their visceral senses better than later-developed Reiki sensation and Auramancers often can feel Reiki as different textures of their natural element. Additionally, these Woken Souls tend to reflect or take on personality traits of their abilities. Spirit Beasts may not become more feral, but they may have significant parallels to the type of animal their Spirit Beast is; and, when they do embrace their power, it is not uncommon for them to actually take on feral qualities. Auramancers are often competitive individuals, but most notably only with other Auramancers; this is because the natural state of auras is to conflict. Personality traits taken on by Auramancers may be more metaphorical than literal; a fire aura may not mean anger or passion, but lust and lewdness while a water aura might not mean fluidity as much as it reflects a personality and heart cold as ice.
Well before a soul is Awoken, there exist traits that can lay dormant with very little if any presentation. These traits are generally genetic, but can be the result of environmental stimuli. The first trait refers to a handful of abilities that all revolve around psionic skills; people with this trait in any form are called Psychics. The trait is an affinity for magic, a multiversal energy source completely separate from Reiki. A practitioner of magic may take one of many titles: mage, witch, warlock, Shaman, etc., but they all refer to the same set of skills: the manipulation of mana.
Psychics generally all share the ability to perceive and channel spiritual energy better than almost any non-psychic, but there still exists several subsets of psychics with specific, individual abilities: Telepaths - the only psychics capable of actual mind-reading abilities; Clairvoyants - psychics capable of seeing the past or future, generally by touch or unwillingly; Extrasensory - psychics with a specific 'sixth sense', such as feeling barriers, auras, or danger, often also associated with a keen intuition; Mediumship - Psychics capable of easily communicating with or even channeling ghosts, also known for high levels of Reiki control; Astral - the second rarest type of Psychic with the ability to Astral Project and potentially teleport; Territorial - the rarest form of Psychic capable of channeling demonic energy for often-powerful, borderline reality-warping abilities within a set area (locked).
The abilities of a Psychic often grow with the Psychic, becoming considerably more powerful and useful with that growth. The best example of this lies in the rare Astral Psychic as their Astral Projection abilities can evolve into Astral Teleportation—even across dimensions. Similarly, Extrasensory Psychics are often possess abilities to perceive dimensional rifts and later this perception can develop into the coveted ability to create rifts or even break gateways between nearby worlds. Psychics are common among Spirit Detectives as they often have a soul strong enough to survive feeding a Spirit Beast, meaning that there are patterns to be seen among psychics with the best example being Mediums often developing strong Reiki control—a trait most prominent in the legendary Daiken Master Genkai.
Magic is an entirely different concept, however. Magic refers to the use of mana, which itself is an energy found in every World that ties them together. While it is notably weak in the Human World due to the Spirit World intentionally choking ley lines—the pathways that mana flows through—it is not impossible to use or at the very least feel. Mana is often considered the "Reiki" of all worlds and can be very powerful, but it is also considerably more difficult to use because it is not native to any soul naturally—no matter how gifted with magic one may be. Magic users exist across all Worlds and are more rare than Psychics. Psychics that are capable of using Magic are considered multi-generational rarities across all worlds.
While there exist various, various schools of magic that do in fact work, all magic works on the fundamental principle that a "spell" is a function. While Magic may come natural to some, often the most powerful spells and Mages use advanced calculations to achieve their desired results. Thus, while magic can be performed innately, it is most powerful when three conditions are met: the source of mana is contained, the spell has a "conduit" for use, and there exists a "spark" to activate the spell. Those being trained to use magic are often taught to use their own natural mana pools as the source for their spells and are often given a book, wand, staff, beads, or other object to act as their conduit. Lastly, it is often willpower, an incantation or even just a snap of the fingers that acts as the spark; the understood rule is that the stronger the spark, the more efficient the spell. This rule has lead to advanced spells requiring a trigger spell to activate.
These rules are flexible, but another understood trait of magic is that the more an object or person uses magic, the more attuned to it and thus efficient with it they become. The more powerful spells a person uses, the larger their mana pool inevitably becomes. This is not true for all objects that can act as mana pools, although many crystals used as source containers slowly restructure themselves to hold more—but still to some type of cap. Similarly, the more a conduit is used, the more mana residue is left behind. This process is called Leyification. Leyification amplifies spells in two ways: increasing the efficiency of mana usage (which may not ever reach a perfect 1:1 ratio, but can still increase drastically) and increasing the amplification the conduit performs on the mana (which only has a soft cap for the skill level of the user). With the consideration that mana pools and conduits grow better with practice and that sparks and knowledge increase with wisdom and experience, it is also an understood thought that older Mages tend to be the most powerful regardless of what school of magic they come from.
Before a soul is Awoken, Psychic traits may manifest as minor feelings that could pass as subconscious perception; not unlike that tingling feeling you may have before the phone rings. Similarly, those attuned to magic may find themselves drawn to others attuned to it or more specifically places where the weak ley lines of the Human World amass small pools of mana.
