Pate continued to lean back on the chair, it's weird to miss two days of eating, but now, back on track. He rubbed his hands in anticipation of his upcoming meal. He saw a penny on the floor next to him, he leaned over to it and saw it was tails up. He flipped it over and went to a normal sitting position in his chair.
 
"Thank you!" Madi called after always making it a mission to be more polite than those serving. She grinned widely to herself, probably appearing crazy, and looked around the table. "S-sorry, its just so odd, seeing this like how we would eat at my moms place and sit around the table and she would try to serve ridiculous amounts of food and Pate, you were super polite she really liked you and she thought Marc needed to eat more and.. leh..." She stumbled over her words, after rambling. What she really meant, was she hopes its always like this.
 
Pate chuckled under his breath at the memories that were starting to come back up. There was one night that he remembered quite vividly. The one night that he came there for the first time, no muscles with a sleeveless top. Madi's Mother shot him the dirtiest look when she opened the front door to see him leaning up against the front doorframe like some sort of a big shot. That night he had two full plates of her Mother's food, which was quite the accomplishment. For the life of him he couldn't remember what they had that night though.


Pate gripped the table forcefully, "Where is the food..."

As if hearing the question the waitress retreated out from a door with a tray of drinks and two shined apples. Once at the table she placed each item to their rightful owners, a pitcher of coffee set up beside Dexters mug then a pitcher of water for the middle of the table. The green apples set down in front of Pate along with his water.


"You're food will be finished soon." She stated before leaving.


Marcus looked over at Madelyn smiling shyly behind his hand as he remembered the tales.


How her mother was so dependable and would somehow put up with them and their craziness.

"Much appreciated." Dexter thanked the waitress as he pulled his coffee closer. He blinked a few times, taking in the aroma of the drink with some delight. He took a small sip, and his brows furrowed, I asked for three sugars, not... none. He thought with a tired sigh before shaking his head. He didn't mind sugarless coffee all that much - if anything, the now more prominent taste of caffeine will jumpstart his systems.


He smiled at Madelyn as she spoke about that particular point in time, the memories creeping up on him and, before he knew it, he was feeling nostalgic.


He hummed to himself curiously, his restless eyes looking over the small group, "So, how was high school for you exactly? I mean I haven't seen or heard from any of you guys in a while."

Jackie looked at his roomate confused. "Dude I have apples" he said handing him six apples from his internal pockets. He ordered an omelet, not much. Every one was so weird, all shy and such. "Ok, this will sound harsh...What the fuck is wrong with you guys?" he asked.


First Pate, and being skinny and sick. Madi being thrown off by her jokes and Marcus being a stiff stick.


"We all changed some for good some bad."
 
Dexter sighed tiredly when Moose spoke up. He wondered if the topic would come up. No, he was wondering when it would come up. Dex wasn't oblivious to the rather awkward air surrounding them, he just chose to ignore it. Bringing it to the spotlight seemed... too bothersome, especially when he had just been reunited with everyone. They haven't seen each other in so long, the atmosphere was a given. He figured it would fix itself in a day or two if left alone until everyone got used to one another. However, some were less patient than others.


He exhaled sharply before peeling away at the banana he got from Jackie, having completely forgotten it until now. He later took a bite of it, his eyes bouncing from one member of the group to the other, wondering what they would say. Marc won't take this too well, he thought; how could he? The guy was jumping from having his name called out. To him this would probably seem like a life/death type of confrontation.


Dex groaned while ruffling his own hair before glancing at Moose, "Indeed we have. That's why we're trying to find out how much exactly each of us has changed, Moosie. Think of it as us getting to know each other from scratch." He smiled, "And hey, you're the biggest mystery of us all right now." He bit off another piece of the banana, "I mean, I remember you being the straightforward type with all the fights we had to drag your sorry ass out of," His smile turned into a grin as he chuckled, "but I don't remember you being the one who couldn't read the mood and just play along."


"So, unless you want us to write a damn resume with our qualities and such, or you have some booze so we can play something like "I have never," I think you'll just have to deal with it..." What he just said finally fully registered in his own brain, and he facepalmed while uttering a silent 'God damn it.' "...you probably do have booze, don't you?"

madi listened, feeling a bit sad at Jakcies words but chuckled anyways. She, wasnt sure if she wanted to answer any of his concerns. Looking around the table, it didnt seem anyone did. She laughed because well... she found it funny they all seemed screwed up in some way or another. Like losing friends for a bit could even have such an effect. "Here. We could probably play." She took an imaginary swig.


not really satisfied with her own abilities to ease tension, she tried to think of what she has not done. She hasnt stolen, but thats basically it. Everything invasive she would never admit to doing she has basically done. Drugs not included. She chuckled again. Not that it was with her permission.


"Well, you expect us to get here and be frozen in time from when we last hung out, were all chummy?" Her voice held some bite. She sighed again, mixing the ice cubes in her water. "Sorry."
 
Jeeze, Madi sure is in a mood, and Dex is in mood as well, but Jackie seems to be the only one showing it. He looked down at his green apples on his plate with delight, he took a bit of the one with the bruise in it, directly on the bruise. For the first time in a day, he had the feeling of life in his veins. He looked over to Moose and said, "Thanks for the offer, and I don't mean to sound like a prude, but... theft on the first day. Really Moose?" He looked over to all of his friends and scolded with mild, instinctive hand gestures,"And alcohol on the first day too? I'm trying to get a fresh start in this school, where nobody knows me as just that 'cute' kid who could never get a date, or could barley pick up a fifteen pound dumbbell in one hand." He sat back in his chair, with a small, almost ever present grin on his face. He then acknowledged Madi's question, "And honestly, yeah, I suppose I kind of did. I thought friends were just friends. Didn't think we would all be at odds like this." He took a few normal bites out of his apple and saw that Madi didn't have any food. He felt his stomach grumble as if to say, Brah, don't do it. Then he took the apple off of his plate and placed it on the table in front of Madi, "Eat up, you look like you need a meal."
 
Madi took one look at the apple and shook her head again. "Well, not that we arent. We just grew up. Friends are always friends, its just.. things change over time and we know less about eachother." She answered apologetically. "And no. I ate a big meal earlier." Think of the swimsuit madi.


"Maybe we just need to know eachother more again, make us feel less like strangers."
 
Marcus listened to the growing conversation, questioning the intensity of some of their words. It was true, if you say farewell to someone for a couple years it's natural for them to change in many ways. And that was all that happened, it was bound to happen. He personally never imagined himself sitting with the familiar group of friends ever again, and even if he did he didn't imagine it being this serious. A naive thought.


They where truly strangers to one another, what had happened over the last two years oblivious to everyone. Marcus tugged at his sleeve bringing it farther down to cover his hands, the scars both new and old seemingly beginning to burn all over again as he attempted to think of a way to help make their current moment the opposite.


"Well," he began speaking up before clearing his throat,


"Let's see...What is everyone hoping to be? A career?" He spoke timidly for the first real time, a different conversation beginning with a question in a group caused others to speak more. It was a statistic he had read about when studying for his major though they hadn't begun school yet.
 
Madi smiled at the ever timid marc, appreciating the change in subject. It was something she was unsure of though, so she threw out an idea. seeing as pursuing swimming wasnt too conventional, she gave her idea.."hm.. i sort of wanted to be and illustrator or an illustrative literary agent. What about you, Marc? I can only imagine everything youd be good at. "
 
Marcus looked up from his lap more when Madi spoke up eyeing her as she informed them of what she wished to do. Raising a brow in interest, he imagined her hunched over at a desk attempting to create character designs or drafting out landscapes. He remembered the small sketches which lined her notes while a lecture was taking place. The creativity they showed.


"I can see you being good at that." He nodded yes approving of her choice,


"Thank you, I'd like to be a Licensed Professional Consoler." He announced a bit perturbed.

Madi grinned and joked. "Well, you're a good talker. And a good person. I could come to you sometimes." She said, thinking of her timid friend and how kind he has always been. she remembered a time when she was always bullied for the way she looked. Madi went through.. a personally unforgettable chubby phase. She was more thn lucky to have someone like him by her side. "But then I would have to share you with other people..." She fakely sighed.
 
Jackie ignored the questions his booze, instictivley stratching his inner arm through the sleeve. "Well, we're strangers. That's what it" letting out a sigh poking at his omelet. "I'm going in to food and nutrtion" he commented avoidng topics of booze and drugs at all cost's. That's when the moose went quiet. "So you want me starting fights again?" he questioned dex.
 
Dexter's eyes jumped between Marcus and Madi, a slight humm escaping him, "Honestly? I don't even know what I want to be specifically." He leaned back in his chair, sighing rather tiredly, "See in my line of work an education doesn't matter much, per se, but rather what you've already accomplished. Sure, a diploma can help, but experience will get you much farther."


He took out his phone, and tapped on it a few times. Moments later, he turned the smartphone to his friends, a well known security firm's webpage punched into his browser, "I helped them design this one. Put in the security system myself based on their reqs. Wasn't even that difficult."


He put his phone back in his pocket, "There's a lot of stuff I've done over the past years, and I could probably be hired mostly anywhere as a PC techie if I show them the coding."


"So... yeah. I'm honestly here just to appease my dad."


"And no, Moose, I really don't." His eyes narrowed tiredly at the guy. Talk about an exhausting first day.

Madi looked closely, eyes visibly glazed over from use of words and ideas she didn't understand. She was the type of person who would spend an hour and a half trying to figure out why she couldn't scroll up or down before realizing she had an elbow on the keyboard. The fact he could navigate the strange world of unnamed tech (To her) Was astounding. "Dude..." After hearing the dad thing, she rolled her eyes. She never liked the man. Too different and not enough understanding. "Dex, for once Im glad that guy convinced you to be here though."
 
Marcus' eyes shined brightly from the girls praise and looked down at his hands with a shy smile.


"Thank you," he responded gratefully before sweeping his black bangs out of his eyes. In time to hear Jackies words, always the one to pick up fights. It caused him to sigh irritably, why did people act so tough it wasn't as if anyone was impressed by people who got into fights it just caused them to fear that individual and what kind of life was that. Marcus though stayed silent as he always found himself doing, pleading that nothing would happen to bad this year.


Before staring at Dexters screen, he had such a natural talent. Working with tech was just an average thing for him, it was interesting to Marcus. If he had the chance to just watch the memorized codes being formed he'd love that though he'd never understand.
 
Dex chuckled, "Thanks, I guess. I'm just hoping they teach something other than Pascal here. I swear that is the only time I'll whine about something being too simple."


"What about you, Jackie? Why food?" He questioned in the hopes of getting the guy to chill a bit. Seriously, the last thing he wanted right now was physical stress.

"I thought so.." he leaned back a bit trying to control his jitters. Jackie sat quietly and losing intrest in his food he just sipped his water. Texting someone aboutmeeting up tommorow before class.


Hearing the voice startled him. "I love food and nutrients intrest me"
 
"Fair enough." Dex nodded, blatantly ignoring the fact that Jackie was so obviously just scavenging for a reason. After such a long time of not seeing the guy, Dexter forgot how to handle him, apparently. He couldn't remember him being this aggressive though.


"And, hey, Madi - you get any of your scetches anywhere? As in, publicated or something? I don't really know how that system works, I'm sorry." He laughed sheepishly while rubbing the back of his head, glancing at the girl.

Madi shrugged, turning a bit pink. Well, her army green canvas bag had a sketch book. She had some pieces back home in a small and local hippy gallery. Still, nothing important. Nothing good. "Nah, Im pretty invisible right now. Thats why Im here. Not good enough yet."
 
'Anyone wanna go to the club or store tonight?" he asked smiling at the people. "Our dorm will need food and other things. Or we can get wasted." the man looked around "I actually have a job too "
 
Dexter smiled at Madi, "You'll get there, Madi. Your scetches were pretty good back when we were kids. Kinda makes you wonder how good you've become over the past few years."


"Oh?" He glanced at Moose, "Where at? And I think I'd be up for the store. Got some stuff I need to take care of tonight." The brown haired teen admitted, remembering Nox's message from earlier today.

"The atomic orange, record store. I need more smokes" he commented eating his omelt finishing it. "And I need some things." he checked his phone and frowned. "If we're going. Gotta haul ass now I have people to meet at the store"
