A Sad Remnant of a Forgotten Time
The year is 2032.
The XCOM project changed everything.
When the Temple Ship was destroyed and its detonation contained by the heroic sacrifice of Colonel George Kale. XCOM remained operational for a year afterwards in case of further alien action.
Decommissioning took another year. Dr. Shen used that time to deconstruct as many of XCOMs advanced weapon systems as he could - the alloys were better used in humanitarian projects, to his mind, and the Elerium stocks too.
B Laser weaponry has replaced most conventional firearms. Arc throwers have been modified for riot control. The DEMON-1 Firestorm prototype was sold to NASA. Elerium power stations turned oil into something useful only for plastics and more conventional aircraft.
Gene-modded XCOM troops were subjected to lengthy experimentation. A number of them died under the knife. The MEC troopers mostly reintegrated into society, their suits retrofitted for heavy labor.
Every nation tests for psychic ability now. Most are snapped up to serve their governments.
The religious shift isn't so surprising - the Vatican couldn't do much in the face of actual alien invasion, and now holds little power for most people. Muslim extremists have also calmed, and people of most religions seem more content to come together in the face of overwhelming atheism.
Africa is now one of the most powerful continents in the world - XCOM had been based in Nigeria, and so Nigeria, Egypt, Mauritius, Botswana, and Seychelles, in particular, have great benefited from their investment in the project. In twenty years these nations have become technological and economic power houses.
Using new technologies developed in the last twenty years, a few corporations have been using advanced submarines to scour the ocean floor for remnants of alien ships and the precious Elerium within.
Shortly after the discovery of significant deposits under the pacific, a number of coastal towns went silent.
XCOM is being reconvened, in secret. Who are we going to punish this time?
