Writing help?

So what if you made a forum board that's dedicated to sharing stories AND helping people improve their writing skills? Like a learning board or something?

I mean I think there'd be people willing to help others learn to write better, I know I'd be on there a lot helping people that were asking for help.

I think it'd be a good idea, could use a little more thoughts to expand on it.

I've contemplated this myself in the past, and I think it's a wonderful idea... The trouble I could see is that a lot of people don't know how to accept constructive criticism... and conversely, a lot of people don't know how to -give- constructive criticism. It would be difficult, unless it was specifically detailed HOW the critique/help/assistance was meant to be given to avoid a lot of hurt feelings and pride... X_x

I meant one dedicated JUST for that

Creative discussion is more vague than that I think

This is how things happen, fortunately if someone gives feedback along the lines of 'Your writing sucks and you should go jump off a bridge', you have recourse to report them for that. RPN supports a positive environment for all users in all areas of the site and we don't accept unfairness of any kind.

As to a dedicated forum for story-writing and development, it comes down to just how popular that sort of thing is. If enough people start producing and assisting each other in story-writing and it becomes a consistent thing, there's grounds to request a sub-forum within the Creativity Discussion Forum for just such a topic. RPN has experimented with other such things, expending site resources to support it to find that there's been no great uptake.

Give us something solid that's popular and taking off and we'll see about allocating more resources to it.

I don't think it would be necessary to add a completely separate board. There really isn't a lot of activity that involves material related to the kinds of posts you're speaking of. I could see a sticky being created outlining criticism etiquette, but I think a completely new board would be too much.

As I said, if the project gets popular enough and gathers a large enough following, there might be grounds for a sub-forum, especially if the Creativity Discussion has the potential to become swamped by threads of that nature.

There is already a sticky for critical etiquette.

We have tried collaborative learn/teach groups before.

80% of people who call themselves writers are not, never will be, and the rapidly abandoned efforts at such an initiative in the past speak volumes.

Merry Christmas.
