Nobody Special

Long before the human species was even a twinkle in any god’s eye, dinosaurs roamed the Earth. 25% of those dinosaurs held what is said to be an ancient predecessor of what is known today as Devil’s Wrath. Eventually, the dinosaurs died out, and over time, their remains became stuck deep within the Earth’s crust, unknown to the humans that would eventually walk on it.
That is, until the early 1800s.
Years ago, in 1835, a gigantic earthquake beneath the Atlantic ocean shook the crust, moving soil rich in the fossils of the diseased dinosaurs, later recognized as Remnants, towards an enormous active volcano, exposing the soil to the sweltering heat and incinerating them. Over a few months, pressure from the sudden carbon emissions within the volcano caused it to erupt. It was recorded as the worst eruption in history, as ash was spread throughout the atmosphere and covered the world for days.
Suddenly, many organisms on Earth began developing strange abilities and enhancements. The cause of this was determined to be a disease that had spread due to inhalation of the ash. By the next day, 10% of the world was reported to have this disease.
Doctors identified three variants of the disease, dubbed Devil’s Wrath: the first granted simple enhancements of the mind and body, the second granted superhuman abilities, and the third—only contracted by non-human organisms—gave creatures either an enhancement or an ability, as well as a sudden violent temperament towards humans. Those with the second variant were noticeably weaker than those with the first, and though they grew weaker over time, it wasn’t an issue until three generations in with the hereditary disease, in the 1900s.
At that point, it had developed and evolved, and began killing off second variants in days. Luckily, an unnamed First Variant doctor, with an enhancement of logic and intelligence, and their Second Variant associate, with an unknown ability pertaining to eyesight, discovered the cause of the deaths. It seemed as though all humans were granted an essential aura that Second Variants were missing part of, and First Variants had an abundance of. They had also learned that 2nd and 1st Variants could form a strong bond with each other that allowed them to share these auras equally. These doctors quickly managed to create some sort of a cure for Devil’s Wrath, with a scientific name of Estranixin, and common names of Devil Renouncers, or Renouncers. These cures were mass produced and distributed everywhere, and once again everything was fine for those infected.
However, throughout all this time, many people had utilized their abilities against the good of the people. Many socially and economically powerful people created various organizations in order to prevent and eliminate these Variant-based threats, with one of the most successful and well-known anti-evil organizations being The International Abnormal Operations Bureau, also known as The Union.
The Union set to put together First Variants, “Overseers,” and Second Variants, “Escorts,” in pairs for the most efficient takedown of any abnormalities.
This organization has been in action for years, and continues to operate after many generations of reparations and dedication.
Hello and welcome to technically the fifth iteration of Wrath, the second RPN iteration of Wrath, and the only iteration of Wrath : Revival. This is a partner-based anime roleplay taking place in a futuristic, infected Japan. If you’re new to the Wrath universe, do not worry! You won’t need to know anything about the old iterations to enjoy this one.
This roleplay will once again revolve around two organizations:
The International Abnormal Operations Bureau, more commonly known as The Union, which is an independent, Government-supported Public Safety organization that employs those infected with Devil's Wrath to protect civilization from Devil's Wrath-related threats,
and…
Ibara, commonly referred to as the Black-Thorned Rose, a recently surfaced meditation-class-turned-cult slash terrorist organization that has committed countless crimes against humanity. Ibara claims to only want to cleanse the world of its sins and bring Devil's Wrath-infected people to light. In reality, Ibara members want to liberate those infected with Devil's Wrath and overthrow the Government, which is still controlled by non-powered humans, and ultimately execute all non-infected humans to force human evolution into a new, powerful race made up completely of infected people. They also plan to do something regarding certain fossils deep down on the ocean’s floor, but that’s not important right now.
You will be able to play as members in both factions, though there will be more focus on the Union. Conflicts between the two will normally take place in the form of missions, where members of both organizations fight to thwart each others plans. In this roleplay, characters will partner with each other to form pairs of Overseers and Escorts.
This roleplay was created by gxxberkit , AriAriAbabwa , and of course, creator of all past Wrath iterations, Nobody Special , with lots of help from Roda the Red , @Elenion Aura, and @FabulousTrash. We’re looking for a minimum of 8 people (not including us), but we can accept more than that. Once enough people are interested, we will eventually link the Discord server, and you can ask us questions there!

Overview, Variants, & Genetics
Devil’s Wrath is a disease that grants those infected with abnormal abilities. Nowadays, 4% of Earth’s entire population has it. It’s said that dinosaurs had an archaic version of this disease, though however they got infected is unknown. The disease has three known variants, but we’ll get to the third later.
Those infected with the First Variant, also known as Overseers, are granted simple enhanced qualities and an enlarged aura. Their enhancements can range from things such as simple enhanced sight (such as night vision, a larger field-of-view, etc.), to enhanced strength or healing. Any human quality can be enhanced, including limbs (legs, arms, etc.) and organs/other body parts (the brain, adrenaline glands, etc.). It should be noted that those infected with the First Variant do not get Superhuman qualities like their Second Variant counterparts. They all, however, have the ability to manipulate their aura in small ways after their first contracts, which unlocks this ability. With the small amount of aura left over after a contract, they may use their aura as minor armor, and once their partnership ends, they’re given more variety for things they can do with their aura.
In contrast, those infected with the Second Variant, also known as Escorts, are granted superhuman abilities and a tiny aura. They develop abilities that regular humans are seemingly incapable of utilizing, but at the cost of their aura in order to keep up with the power. Many people believe Second Variants are more wild and unintelligent compared to First Variants, and are therefore very likely to be discriminated against.
Both of these variants are naturally 3-5x more physically powerful and durable than un-infected humans.
They’re also hereditary, and those infected will generally have children with the same variant as them, save for the occasional mutation. Variants are recessive to non-variants. Should two differing variants have a child, their variant would be seemingly random. But, you can almost accurately rely on punnett squares to figure it out.
Their qualities and abilities are also hereditary, but mutations regarding these are more likely. Parents’ abilities are also likely to mix and form a unique ability for their child. For example:
Synchronization & Desynchronization
As you know, all Second Variants have a small, damaged aura half the size of a normal humans. This condition is called Desynchronization. This lack of a full aura causes Second Variants to grow sick and begin to die within three days of birth. This, however, is a relatively recent phenomenon. In order to stay alive they’re given “Renouncers,” which stabilizes their aura. They generally take this until their first contract. Synthetic Renouncers, also known as Synthetics or Pseudo-Renouncers also make their rounds through illegal services, but those simply mask the effects of desynchronization.
In the 1900s, it was discovered that First Variants have abnormally large auras that could be halved with no damage to the Overseer, and that bonds formed between them and Escorts resulted in them sharing an aura that kept Second Variants alive, with a little left over for First Variants to still use. The bond is commonly referred to as a Contract, and the aura share is called Synchronization. These synchronizing contracts can be made between a First and Second Variant as long as they both mutually consent to it, and it must be enacted by physical contact—whether it be in the form of a handshake, hug, fight, or anything else.
Partnerships can fizzle if the relationship between the Overseer and Escort worsens, or can be forcefully ended by sheer will. If a Contract suddenly ends, the Escort experiences a brief attack of pain shooting throughout their entire body. In terms of distance from each other, partners can typically physically tell if their partner is extremely far away from them (Like being in another Country), but distance has no effect on partners. If a partner dies, the other partner will feel it, with Escorts specifically feeling pain from a sudden Contract-Break.
(Mac can't draw! Everyone point and laugh at him!)
Third Variants
Third Variants, more commonly known as Beasts, are non-human organisms that are infected with Devil’s Wrath. They are the closest descendents of Remnants. Once infected, Beasts will generally grow violent and aggressive towards humans, and may or may not gain an ability—though, ability-possessing Beasts are extremely common. Sometimes, however, they may not turn into a beast. Due to their newfound aggression, they are naturally drawn to places populated with many humans in search of prey. Though, not all Beasts eat the humans they kill.
Any non-human organism may become a Beast due to infection. That includes animals, plants, microorganisms, fungi, and anything else that lives. House pets that are infected may be able to fight off the violent tendencies, but that is quite rare.
Should a Beast consume human flesh, its variant may evolve. For example, if a Wolf Beast with a Second Variant ability to breathe fire kills and eats the flesh of a human, it is possible for it to grow in size, and its ability may strengthen or even evolve, allowing it to now generate or manipulate fire without having to breathe it.
Beasts are social creatures. They tend to band together in herds regardless of original species, and live and attack together in groups. They also take care of their young together. In order to breed, a Beast must have a “nest,” in which their offspring would incubate. To prevent the offspring from spawning, one can simply destroy the nest it stays in. However, nests are commonly found in hotspots—areas that are high in Beast herds—which typically make this task difficult.
Hellspawn
Hellspawn are special items used by, but not exclusive to, the Chief and Captains of The Union. A Hellspawn is created by fusing a regular object with the heart of a human infected with the Second Variant of Devil's Wrath in a machine known as a Baleful Coalescer in a process called coalescence.
The creation of Hellspawn has long been made illegal, but The Union has collected and archived Hellspawn its employees have come across for use by the Chief and Captains. The Union also has access to one of few Coalescers left in the world. Escorts have the option to donate their bodies to the Union in case of death. Unbeknownst to them, If they opt in, they will be put up for review and potentially turned into Hellspawn. The creation of Hellspawn is an almost well-kept secret and only the Chief, Captains, and Deputies are aware of. The Government of course knows about the existence of Hellspawn, but has yet to find out that The Union is still secretly making them. Many people are aware of the existence of Hellspawn, but only know of them as ancient relics and do not necessarily know where they come from. This is excluding the higher-ups of Ibara, which are aware of their creation.
For some reason, all Hellspawn are white after coalescence. They can be given colored attachments and grips, and may also be painted, but they are naturally white. Because they are made with the hearts of Escorts, Hellspawn carry the same qualities of the Escort used to make them. For example, if an Escort with the ability to destroy matter with a touch was fused with a katana, it may make a katana that can cut through anything, no matter the material. An Escort who could generate explosions fused with a revolver would create a revolver with extremely explosive rounds. It should be noted that Hellspawn do not have to be weapons, and can come in the form of anything.
Hellspawn can only be held by Overseers, as they are made from the organs of Escorts. Their organs make it like a second contract with less of the aura sharing. In order for an Escort to use a hellspawn, they’d have to give it to their Overseer to bond with. The Union does not have all Hellspawn, and it is possible that a few Ibara members will have them. However, we ask you to ask permission before you give a non-high power a Hellspawn.
Overview
"Even if they hate us, we must protect them to survive until things change."
The International Abnormal Operations Bureau, more commonly known as the Union, is an independent, Government supported Special Police/Military organization that specializes in defending the human race against threats regarding abnormal beings, such as humans and animals infected with Devil's Wrath who might cause harm to others, or any other abnormal being that threatens humankind. By recruiting many of those who are infected with Devil's Wrath, the Union promises the safety of the public thanks to its employees, who are trained to deal with any abnormal issue that may come forward.
Three divisions that total to 150,000 people make up the Union: Law Enforcement, Pest Control, and Spec Ops. The Chief supervises the entirety of the precinct, but also takes care of Law Enforcement along with their deputy(ies). The other two divisions are led by Captains and their deputies. Under them may be High-Capability Overseers, or HCOs, who are overseers that have won a 1v1 battle against an escort. Above all these people, however, is the Director, who owns the entirety of the Union.
Law Enforcement maintains public safety, Pest Control controls Beasts, and Spec Ops focuses on much bigger threats, like terrorism. Some people within any of these divisions may be dubbed supports, or “Angels.”
Along with being separated by their divisions, employees are also individualized with their preferred method of violence. This includes firearms, “Nodeppo”; blades, “Kamaitachi”; blunt melee weapons, “Oni”; ability-based combat, “Kitsune”; and those who specialize in multiple weapons, “Yasha”; Along with them is a special combat-type, specifically fit for those who do not have partners, “Nure.”
Note: The Chief and Captain roles are off limits
Overview
"Even the most beautiful of roses protects itself with thorns."
Ibara is a terrorist organization of about 25,000 people notorious for the murder of innocent people and employees of the Union, organized crimes, drug & human trafficking, targeted murders, assassination, terror attacks, and much more. All known Ibara members are immediately placed on a wanted list and a terror watchlist. Formerly a yoga and meditation class in the 1980s, it has since evolved into the organization it is today.
Recently, it has started taking in powerless members and investors, the former most likely being used as disposable pawns, and the latter mostly being powerful people providing assistance in exchange for protection. They have also been illegally selling synthetic “Renouncers,” or Synthetics, among other things.
Ibara has a vast hierarchy with many ranks, each named after flowers. It is led by the Sakura, or the prophet, along with their advisor, the Iris. Below them are Daffodils, important and protected members of Ibara that are also given leadership positions. Under them are Peonies, sergeant-like commanders of the lower ranks, Roses, and Lilies. Roses are powered members of the cult, and Lilies are members that are not infected with Devil’s Wrath.
Note: The Sakura and the Iris roles are off limits
LAST BUT FINALLY NOT LEAST (assuming you didn’t just skip to this tab) THE RULES!!!
These should be simple enough to follow.
-Obviously, RPN rules apply.
-Please credit the source/artists of the face claim! If you're having trouble finding it, we're more than happy to help!
-Discord participation is mandatory. OK, not mandatory like that. Just join our Discord (when it comes out,) as that is where a majority of information not already here will be. Activity there isn’t necessary, just keep in touch with us
-We’re going 2 characters per person. No more, no—well, less is okay. GMs have been given a three character limit.
-Post minimum is once per character per week. Depending on how things go, we may be more lenient on this. Please inform us as best you can about any hiatuses or if you intend on dropping, as this is a partner-based roleplay. Communication is important.
-Please ask fellow players for consent to be partners! Feels like common sense.
-Keep OOC drama to a minimum! Also pretty much common sense.
-It’s okay to have strong characters, but please remember to be balanced and reasonable regarding their powers.
-Also, try to be as original as possible. However, since first variants are limited in a way, we will be more lenient with those.
-Player characters must have a variant, and must be affiliated with one of the organizations. Non-affiliate PCs will be prosecuted. Traitors and spies are welcome. Just be sure to talk about it with us beforehand and be aware of the consequences.
The other GMS may be more lenient, but I (Kit) will shoot you down quick. Don’t try anything, xoxo
Thank you for reading. Beyond this point is just a dictionary. Soon, the Discord server and cs thread will be made and posted!!
