Nobody Special
Mac
Years ago, in 1835, an enormous, undiscovered submarine volcano located in the Atlantic Ocean near Canada erupted. Thankfully, the enormous eruption harmed nobody, but the ash, as a result, covered the entire world for days. Suddenly, many people and animals on Earth began developing strange abilities and enhancements. The cause of this was determined to be a disease that had spread due to inhalation of the ash.
Doctors identified two different variants of the disease; one that granted simple enhancements of the mind and body, and one that granted superhuman abilities. By the next day, 10% of the world was reported to have one of the two diseases, including celebrities, world leaders, and even some top religious figures. 3 days later, those with the disease began growing sick, and even dying. One of those who died was Rome's High Priest. This caused an uproar in the world, with the population deeming the disease to be the "Devil's Wrath". Those who outlived the high priest were bashed, and still are to this day.
A few days later, a doctor who's identity still remains unknown, used their newfound enhancement of logic and intelligence to discover that the Second Variants were all missing half of a seemingly essential aura that First Variants had a large amount of, and that Second Variants forming strong bonds with 1st Variants generated a reaction that allowed them to share auras equally. They also managed to create a cure to the Devil's wrath, and it became known as Estranixin, more commonly known as Devil Renouncers, or "Renouncers" for short. With the almost immediate mass production and distribution of Renouncers, those with the Devil's Wrath became a normal part of the world after some time.
However, while some used their newfound abilities for good, many used them for evil. In order to come up with a way to prevent and eliminate Variant-based threats, multiple successful businesspeople combined their wealth and created an organization based on handling the newest evils of the world: The International Abnormal Operations Bureau, also known as The Union.
The Union had a simple, yet efficient concept: A First Variant, or an "Overseer", and a Second Variant, or an "Escort" would team up to handle any abnormalities that occurred, and protect the human race.
Now, in Present Day 2021, The Union still exists, and it's units still operate after generations of hard work and dedication.
Hello! Welcome to the official interest check for Wrath. Wrath is a partner-based, multiple-setting anime roleplay where you will be able to participate in the multiple happenings that take place within a futuristic, Devil's Wrath-affected Japan.
Wrath will revolve around two main organizations:
The International Abnormal Operations Bureau, more commonly known as The Union, which is an independent, Government-supported Public Safety organization that employs those infected with Devil's Wrath to protect civilization from Devil's Wrath-related threats.
and...
Ibara, also known as the Black-Thorned Rose, a chaotic terrorist organization that has recently been committing endless crimes against the public. By manipulating the public eye and gaining mass support, Ibara claims to want to liberate those infected with Devil's Wrath and overthrow the Government, which is still controlled by non-powered humans, and give that power to those with Devil's Wrath. In reality, Ibara members want to execute all non-infected humans and force human evolution into a new, powerful race made up completely of infected people. They also have a large scale plot to revive a certain urban legend, but will not reveal this plan until later in the story.
___
You will be able to play as members of both of these organizations, as well as other smaller ones, as they wage war against each other! Conflicts between the two will normally take place in the form of missions, where members of both organizations fight to thwart each others plans. In this roleplay, characters will partner with each other to form pairs of Overseers and Escorts, who work best in partnerships. These concepts take heavy inspiration from anime/manga like Soul Eater, Black Bullet, and Psycho-Pass.
If you are interested, or have any questions, please let me know! If I find that enough people are interested (I'm looking for a minimum 7-10 people at the moment, but I will gladly accept more than that!), I will open it up for applications and create a lore thread explaining everything in-depth! Thank you!
Overview, Variants, & Genetics
Devil's Wrath is a disease that grants those infected with it abnormal abilities. The disease has two known variants:
First Variant: Grants the infected individual enhanced qualities. This can range from things as simple enhanced sight (such as night vision, a larger field-of-view, etc.), to enhanced strength or healing. Any human quality can be enhanced, including limbs (legs, arms, etc.) and organs/other body parts (the brain, adrenaline glands, etc.). It should be noted that those infected with the First Variant do not experience any Superhuman qualities like their counterparts.
Second Variant: Grants the infected individual superhuman abilities. Those infected with this phenomenal variant experience the development of abilities that regular humans are incapable of utilizing. Examples include elemental manipulation, regenerative healing, toxokinesis, and much more.
First and Second Variants are naturally more physically powerful and durable than non-powered humans. Because the roleplay involves the use of firearms, bullets still harm characters, but are not as devastating as they would be against a regular human.
Both of these variants are hereditary, children of those infected will almost always have the same variant as their parents. If two parents with different variants have a child, the child's variant will be random. Enhanced qualities and abilities can also be hereditary, but children do not always share their parents' enhancements and abilities due to genetic mutations. It is also possible for parents' variants to mix and form a unique ability for their child-- for example:
Synchronization & Desynchronization
For unknown reasons, Second Variants suffer from a condition known as Desynchronization. All humans have an aura, or life force, that fades away upon death. While all other living organisms are born with healthy, thriving auras, humans infected with the Second Variant are born with a damaged aura that is halved. Because the aura is damaged, most Second Variants grow sick and begin to die within three days of being born. In order to stay alive, humans have to take medicine called Estranixin, also known as "Renouncers". Most Second Variants take Renouncers in their early lives to stay healthy.
Following the initial outbreak of Devil's Wrath, it was discovered that First Variants have abnormally large auras that could be halved with no damage to the infected person, and that bonds formed between First and Second Variants resulted in a sharing of aura that kept Second Variants alive. This bond is commonly known as a Contract, and the sharing of aura is known as Synchronization. These synchronizing contracts can be made between a First and Second Variant as long as they both mutually consent to it, and it must be enacted by physical contact-- whether it be in the form of a handshake, hug, fight, or anything else.
Partnerships can fizzle if the relationship between the Overseer and Escort begins to worsen, or can be forcefully ended by sheer will. If a Contract suddenly ends, the Escort experiences a brief, attack of pain shooting throughout their entire body. In terms of distance from each other, partners can typically physically tell if their partner is extremely far away from them (Like being in another Country), but distance has no effect on partners. If a partner dies, the other partner will feel it, with Escorts feeling pain from a sudden Contract-Break.
(I can't draw! )
Side Effects, Disorders, other Circumstances & Fun Facts- - It is possible for Variant abilities to evolve and strengthen when the infected is under extreme levels of stress, such as being in near-death situations or other traumatic happenings.
- - It is rare, but not impossible for someone infected with Devil's Wrath to not manifest any ability or enhancement at all.
- - There is a rare disability known as Synchronization Deficit Phenomenon (Shortened to SDP), where a First Variant is unable to or finds it more difficult to Synchronize and form a Contract with a Second Variant.
- - For reasons unknown, non-human organisms spontaneously become infected and transform into Beasts. It does not happen to every animal, but it is extremely common.
- - It is possible for Humans and Animals to form Contracts. However, it is substantially difficult, and 97% of non-humans that are infected with Devil's Wrath become Beasts.
- - Beasts are tamable, but it all depends on the Beast's willpower to fight the urge to attack their 'master'. It is extremely hard to tame a Beast, and those who do are commendable.
- - It is currently impossible for First Variants to have or develop Second Variant abilities, and vice versa.
- - Variant Abilities normally manifest anywhere from 4 months of age to 13 years of age. It is possible for abilities to manifest earlier or later.
- - Devil's Wrath-Infected humans were banned from Governing following an incident where a Second Variant member of the Diet attempted to assassinate the Prime Minister with his fingernail-shooting ability. Non-authorized use of Variant abilities on public property was also made illegal after this incident, but it is rarely followed.
Overseers & Escorts
Typically, when paired, First and Second Variants will be known as Overseers and Escorts. This is the most common way of referring to those infected with Devil's Wrath, even if they do not have partners.
In terms of physical classification, both Overseers and Escorts are capable of having abnormal hair and eye colors and other physical traits due to the disease's mutated genes. It is generally more common for Escorts to have odd hair colors, and Overseers to have odd eye colors. This is not a standard or a rule, however, and either variant may or may not have these traits.
It has become a common public opinion that Overseers are normally the more composed, intelligent 'handlers' of the wilder, super-powered Escorts. Because of this, Escorts are typically more discriminated against than Overseers. While it has been scientifically proven that some Overseers have a chance of maturing much earlier than Escorts, this opinion is untrue, and neither variant acts as their partner's 'Guardian' or 'Handler' unless that relationship is developed and agreed on within the partnership.
In The Union, Overseers do have a very small amount of authority over their Escort partners. Escorts are not allowed to hold positions of high power in the union (Like chiefs, captains, etc.) due to the threat and risk of sudden desynchronization. Escorts are also typically expected to protect their Overseers from harm because they are normally the more physically able ones. Overseers are seen as the brain, and Escorts are seen as the brawn.
Overview
"Even if they hate us, we must protect them to survive until things change."
The International Abnormal Operations Bureau, more commonly known as the Union, is an independent, Government supported Special Police/Military organization that specializes in defending the human race against threats regarding abnormal beings, such as humans and animals infected with Devil's Wrath who may potentially cause harm to others, or any other abnormal being that threatens humankind. By recruiting those who are infected with Devil's Wrath, the Union promises the safety of the public thanks to its employees, who are trained to deal with any abnormal issue that may come forward.
DivisionsThe Union is ultimately owned and controlled by the Director, but day-to-day operations are usually run by the Chief of the Union, and three other Division Captains. There are Four Divisions in total:
Law Enforcement:
Led by the Chief, the Law Enforcement Division maintains public order and safety-- often in the form of daily patrols, carrying out arrests, preventing incidents, and investigating crime scenes/criminal activities. Although this typically pertains to incidents including those with Devil's Wrath, the Union has also been granted jurisdiction over regular human crimes as well. Employees are known as Officers, but some are known as Detectives. Officers of the Union frequently collaborate with members of different divisions, providing basic support.
Special Operations/Military:
The Spec Ops division focuses on greater threats, like gigantic beasts, large-scale terrorism, and war-- should it take place. Because of this, the Spec Ops division is mostly made up of High-Capability escorts and overseers who can handle themselves in battle without the help of a partner. Employees of the Spec Ops division are known as Specialists. Most Specialists work dual positions in another division in order to stay active, as members of the Spec Ops are usually on standby until their skills are required.
Pest Control:
The Beast Extermination Division, more commonly known as "Pest Control" or "BED", are responsible for eliminating Beasts, or animals/living organisms that have been infected with Devil's Wrath. Because non-humans often lose all self will and become extremely violent upon infection, Pest Control handles them in order to protect civilians from harm. Employees of the BED are known as Hunters. Hunters are trained in discerning different kinds of beasts and their threat levels in real time, hunting them, efficiently removing them, destroying nests, and clearing hot spots.
Support:
The Support Division specializes in non-combative support of Officers, Specialists, and Hunters in the other three divisions. This assistance comes in the form of Medical support, the creation of special weapons and support items, research, analytics, and much more. Employees of the Support Division are commonly referred to as "Angels" for their skills, but they do not have any specific title due to the broad spectrum of things they are capable of. Like Special Operations, Most members of the Support Division also work dual positions in other divisions.
Positions
As previously stated, The Union is owned by the Director, but is run by the Chief and the Division Captains. Chiefs and Division captains must be High-Capability Overseers, and typically have auras that are large enough to synchronize with two escorts. Division Captains are not required to have large auras or two escorts, but the Chief is.
The Union classifies its employees by their preferred way of combat. There are various kinds of classifications:
Standard (Firearm-Type):
Employees who have proven their proficiency in any type of combat with a firearm and in hand-to-hand combat. These employees always use pistols, but have the option to choose their own type of service-pistol. Their uniform includes a patch with a pistol on it.
Blade-Type:
Employees who have proven their proficiency in any type of combat with a bladed weapon (sword, knife, axe, etc.) and in hand-to-hand combat. Becoming a blade-type requires the employee to take a test that simulates battle with an opponent with a firearm , a melee weapon, and hand to hand combat. Their uniform includes a patch with a knife on it.
Melee-Type:
Employees who have proven their proficiency in any type of combat with hand-to-hand combat or with melee weapon (fists, bat, crowbar, brass knuckles, random objects, etc.). Becoming a melee-type requires the employee to take a test that simulates battle with an opponent with a firearm , a melee weapon, and hand to hand combat. Their uniform includes a patch with a raised fist on it.
Ability-Type:
Escorts who have proven their proficiency in any type of combat with a combat-based variant ability, and in hand-to-hand combat. Becoming an ability-type requires the employee to take a test that simulates battle with an opponent with a firearm, a melee weapon, and hand to hand combat. Ability-Types are usually very reliant on their abilities in combat. Their uniform does not have a special patch.
Hybrid-Type:
Employees who have proven their proficiency in any type of combat with two or more of the given combat types, and in hand to hand combat. Becoming a hybrid-type requires the employee to take a test that simulates battle with an opponent with a firearm, a weapon, and hand-to-hand combat. If applicable, their uniform will have two patches with their types on them. (For example, a Standard/Blade Hybrid will have a pistol patch and a knife patch.)
Special-Type:
An employee (usually a former deputy or an employee who is incapable of a partnership) who operates without a partner. (Overseers who's escorts have died are called Widowers, Escorts who's Overseers have died are called Widows) Their uniform does not have a special patch.
High-Capability:
There are two types of High Capability Employees:
1: An Escort who has proven their ability to operate without an Overseer.
2: An Overseer who has proven their ability to operate (against any variant-type) without an Escort.
Their uniform does not have a special patch.
Deputy:
A Deputy is the escort partner of a Captain of The Union. In the event of the death of a Captain, the Deputy is allowed to temporarily give a Captain's orders until the Captain is replaced. Deputies also have the option to retire or join a division as a regular member, and may replace their previous partner with a new Overseer or operate alone as a special employee.
Captain:
A Captain is a high-capability overseer who supervises a division of The Union (Pest Control, Spec Ops, or Support) Captains are generally some of the strongest employees in The Union, but this isn't always the case.
Chief:
A Chief is a high-capability Overseer who supervises not only the entirety of The Union precinct they work at, but also the Law Enforcement Division. The Chief is usually known as one of, if not the strongest employee in the precinct, but this is not always the case. The Chief has to be able to handle two or more escorts.
In terms of authority and status, The Union's Hierarchy is as so:
Chief ♕
↓
Chief Deputies 1 & 2
↓
Captains & Captains' Deputies
↓
High Capability Employees (No authority)
↓
Regular Officers, Specialists, Hunters, "Angels"
Uniform
Even though they are a special organization, The Union still values a dress code, even though it is very lenient compared to standard police/military uniforms. It should be noted that the Chief, Captains, and Deputies all wear white/gold versions of these Uniforms, and also have white service caps with a golden Union insignia on them.
Law Enforcement
The Law Enforcement Uniform consists of a navy blue blazer with gold trim, and a white dress shirt underneath. The blazer holds any necessary patches that indicate the classification of the Officer. Officers have the option of wearing skirts or pants, but they must be black. Black/white/navy socks/stockings, black/brown/navy shoes, boots or sneakers. Officers are allowed to wear any support gear that is necessary, along with holsters/sheaths for their weapons. Uniform also includes a utility belt with handcuffs, but it is not mandatory to wear.
Spec Ops
The Special Operations/Military Uniform consists of a navy blue double-breasted blazer with a white dress shirt underneath and a navy blue tie. The blazer holds any necessary patches that indicate the classification of the Specialist. Specialists have the option of wearing skirts or pants, but they must be black. Black/white/navy socks/stockings, black/brown/navy shoes or boots. Specialists are allowed to wear any support gear that is necessary, along with holsters/sheaths for their weapons.
Pest Control
The Beast Extermination Division Uniform is a bit more comfortable and combat-appropriate due to the circumstances Hunters are normally in. Fitted with a black military trench coat with a dark green dress shirt underneath, and a black shoulder cape, their cape holds any patches that indicate the classification of the Hunter. Hunters have the option of wearing skirts or pants, but they must be black. Black/white/navy socks/stockings/leggings, black/brown/navy shoes, boots or sneakers. Hunters are allowed to wear any support gear that is necessary, along with holsters/sheaths for their weapons. They also have the option to wear hoods or cloaks to better conceal their presence. They typically have green backpacks that hold rations for long hunting trips.
Depending on the Hunting Grounds, their uniform's colors may change. Their dress code may also change depending on the season, or become more lenient depending on where they are.
Support
When working as support employees, "Angels" do not have any specific dress code, as The Union wants them to be as comfortable as possible while working. Typically, out of respect, most employees wear a dress shirt and pants/a skirt, but this does not go for every employee.
Overview
"Even the most beautiful of roses protects itself with thorns."
Ibara is a terrorist organization notorious for the murder of innocent people and employees of the Union, organized crimes, drag & human trafficking, targeted murders, assassination, terror attacks, and much more. All known Ibara members are immediately placed on a wanted list and a terror watchlist. They are also all wanted for threats to humankind, by reviving the Remnants. Ibara claims that their main motive is to remove powerless humans from positions of power, and to give that power to those infected with the Devil's Wrath. They use this motive in order to gain supporters and draw in investors who will fund their chaos. In reality, the leader of Ibara wants to execute all non-infected humans and create a new, evolved human race solely made up of infected people.
Ibara's most recent and effective crime is the selling of fake, synthetic "Renouncers" to escorts in need. These renouncers do not include key ingredients/chemicals and simply mask the pain and other effects of desynchronization until they get their hands on real renouncers, or suddenly die.
Ibara, despite its crimes against humanity, has managed to reel in investors, who fund their activities. These investors are usually politicians and company executives that normally remain hidden in shadows and offer support-- whether it be in the form of weapons, hired muscle, money, or anything else. Many of these investors are also non-infected humans who have been promised safety from death in exchange for their assistance.
Ibara's main members are all infected with Devil's Wrath, automatically making them dangerous individuals. While it was previously rumored that Ibara was made up solely of infected people, there have recently been unpowered humans claiming to be members. It is likely that they are either working as Ibara's disposable pawns, or that Ibara is contracting their skills in exchange for protection or survival.
Beasts are non-human living organisms that have been infected with Devil's Wrath. For reasons unknown, all non-human living things normally grow extremely violent and aggressive when infected with Devil's Wrath, and will attack and kill humans. Once infected, Beasts may develop abilities pertaining to their Variant. This is extremely common, but is not always a guarantee. Beasts are naturally drawn towards societies and frequently attack cities and homes in search of prey. Not all Beasts eat the humans they kill, but carnivorous ones may.
Any non-human organism can become a Beast. This means that animals, microorganisms, plants, and many other things can become Beasts. House pets can even suddenly become Beasts once their Variant manifests, but it is possible for animals that were previously domesticated to fight their violent tendencies and continue to live alongside humans, albeit rare.
If a Beast consumes human flesh, it is rewarded by growing in power. For example, if a Wolf Beast with a Second Variant ability to breathe fire kills and eats the flesh of a human, it is possible for it to grow in size, and its ability may strengthen or even evolve, allowing it to now generate or manipulate fire without having to breathe it.
Beasts breed with each other and create nests, which incubate and give birth to new Beasts. These nests can be destroyed to prevent the spawn of new Beasts.
Hotspots are areas that are extremely high in Beast spawns and activity, and are very dangerous to approach. Beasts also tend to band together in herds regardless of species, and attack cities in groups.
If you need a visual, imagine a literal oak tree suddenly spewing poison at you and then digesting your dead body through the soil while you were on a hike in the forest. Yes, Beasts can be anything that is alive! Your cat could possibly kill you at any point in time.
Hellspawn are special weapons used by, but not exclusive to the Chief and Captains of The Union. A Hellspawn is created by fusing a regular weapon with the heart of a human infected with the Second Variant of Devil's Wrath in a machine known as a Baleful Coalescer in a process called coalescence. The creation of Hellspawn has long been made illegal, but The Union has collected and archived Hellspawn its employees have come across for use by the Chief and Captains. The Union Support Division also has access to one of few Coalescers left in the world. Escorts have the option to donate their bodies to the Union in case of death. If they opt in, they will be put up for review and potentially turned into Hellspawn. This an extremely well kept secret, and the only people who know about it are the Chief, The Chief's deputies, and the Captains. The Government knows about Hellspawn, but has yet to find out that The Union is still secretly making them. Employees of the Union and people who keep up with The Union know about Hellspawn, but only know of them as ancient relics and do not know where they come from.
Qualities
For some reason, all Hellspawn are mostly white after coalescence. They can be given colored attachments and grips, but they are naturally white. Because they are made with the hearts of Escorts, Hellspawn carry the same qualities of the Escort used to make them. For example, if an Escort with the ability to destroy matter with a touch was fused with a katana, it may make a katana that can cut through anything, no matter the material. An Escort who could generate explosions fused with a revolver would create a revolver with extremely explosive rounds. It should be noted that Hellspawn do not have to be physical weapons, and can come in the form of anything, including pills. There was once a Captain that used pills that temporarily made her extremely fast and strong, and those pills are still available for use if a new Captain wishes to use them.
(Hellspawn can only be used by Overseers, because they are made from the organs of Escorts. The Union does not have all Hellspawn, and it is possible that a few Ibara members or even unaffiliated characters will have them. Please ask before you give a non-high power a Hellspawn, though!)
History
Hellspawn were originally used by the Earliest Chief and Captains of The Union. They sacrificed Escorts because it was extremely difficult to recruit members and Beasts needed to be killed. When word of Hellspawn got out, many criminals used them as a way to make money, kidnapping Second Variants and killing them for their hearts, then selling the Hellspawn off to the highest bidder. These criminals, known as Hellspawn dealers, were thwarted and their weapons were archived, but Hellspawn dealing returned decades later, taking the form of a much more secretive business. Once the original Chief and Captains retired, their Hellspawn were archived for later use by their successors.
There are still Hellspawn dealers out there today, but they are extremely underground and do not operate frequently.
