World Building: Fantasy

Right, I know that there is already a world building thread going on, but this is aimed to build a high fantasy world for a story I'm writing thats taking elements from pathfinder and d&d. For now the world is tentatively named Tellus.

Basically I;m open to what races are there but human/other combinations that are definitely in are: Hellborn (fiends), Faeborn (fey), Highborn (celestials), Dhampir.

Gods, continents, nations etc are completely open for creation, but I'd rather have some of the ancient and lost mpires feel from dnd 4e.

Its currently aimed to use pathfinder mechanics and classes, but since I'm aiming to write a story in it, it won;t be too firmly wedded to it.

Is it absolutely necessary to build the world before telling the story?

That's an important question. Really think about that.

Do you have coherent metaphysics for the magic and magical beings? Do you have a True History for your own reference? How necessary are the Pathfinder mechanical influences? What, precisely, are you asking for?

The pathfinder influences literally extend to classes and classes only: this gut is a wizard, this one is a cleric, this one is a druid. And yes, I feel that it is necessary to build some of the world befor the story, that way I don't end up with ridiculous names for cities and countries, and I can be fairly certain about how the story starts, if not where it goes. Magical mechanics, no, I have no concrete idea on that, so I figured that I'd open it up for discussion and other people's ideas.
