Oh, that's easy my man. Mercenary's only fight for money, thus if the company they were with was no longer getting paid then most would leave to seek more lucrative work.
Good thing, for your character at least, the Longlocks are willing to pay handsomely to anyone who breaks the curse.

if it still isn't clear, what the GM is explaining is that our current timeline is a alternate timeline of the game/book timeline. So, essentially, if we take our world as an example...Real World: WW2 started in 1939 and ended in 1945 (from a 2018 perspective)
Alternate World: WW2 did not occur yet and might never occur. (from a 2018 perspective)
In the context of this roleplay:
game/book world: northern war occurred or will occur (depending on what year it is)
IC world: the northern war did not occur and might or might never occur depending on storyline direction.
Not sure if it's clearer but hopefully it is.
