Just Clownin' Around
This is literally the same lore from Twisted Motives with some fixes and tweaks on a few things. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also the magic is loosely based off of modern day witchcraft/wiccan/pagan practices.
Basic World Lore
19XX Earth, A new island has risen from the ocean off the coast of Oregon, USA. This island is Ebaebux. Of course the US has claimed it as another state. Upon it lived a small population of people known as the Ebaebians, with them brought a new religion.
The Children of the four Divines. They worship Four Gods each corresponding with the four elements, four cardinal directions, the four seasons, and four times of day. Because of their worship these people were granted the ability to control a force once thought to be fantasy, Magic. Only Ebaebians and their descendants obtain this ability. They use what is called a “Focal point”, it is an items such as a wand or any other handheld object used to direct their power. Some of the highly skilled are able to use just their hands. They also have familiars, animals with have a deep connection from which they draw power from. They are only taught how to use their powers after the age of 18 as they are then seen to be responsible enough to obtain it. After turning 18 most Witchards apply to a Magical Institution similar to applying for college. Other may do homeschooling or have private tutors depending on the families traditions.
Over the years the Ebaebians have spread out across the globe, having children, grandchildren, so forth. Now magic users are simply known as witchards, a play on the old term of witches and wizards. Ebaebux itself had become somewhat of a tourist area for a few years causing the city of Litchwood to be built, it is the only city on the entire island, the Ebaebians would not allow further construction through their forests and hills as to not disrespect their Gods. Because of this the only way to reach the island is by ferry.
About the Gods
The Children of the four Divines
Muara, Goddess Of Fire, South, Summer, Noon.
Awtris, Goddess Of Earth, North, Autumn, Midnight.
Sydur, God Of Air, East, Spring, Sunrise.
Urasil, God Of Water, West, Winter, Sunset.
The four Gods inhabit the realm known as Mida. Described by the Ebaebians to be a peaceful meadow filled land of warmth and sunshine. Where the deceased and Gods live together.
There is no ‘head God’ such as with some other polytheistic religions but they all work together to combine their strengths and create harmony for their creations. They also claim equal responsibility for tragedy and woes as it is a part of the balance. There has been rumor of a 5th god long forgotten but no one has discovered any information about them and it's usually dismissed as myth.
Focal Points
Also referred to as wands. They aren't only restricted to wands like you'd typically see in HP though. It can literally be any object you can think off. Pocket watch, cane, baseball bat ect. As long as the Witchard feels an attachment to it they can use it. It takes some dedication and training to start using it but thats part of the learning process. Only VERY skilled Witchards have ever been able to use just their hands. Some spells or rituals may be too complicated to only perform with wands or Focal Points and may require special steps or ingredients to perform. Some spells are simple enough to break down into a symbol and can be written as sigils.
Familiars
Witchards can choose to assign a familiar to themselves. Familiars are soul bonded to their Witchards and because of that cannot be harmed by forces other than magic. Witchards draw magical energy from their familiars and they may be help in giving insight into situations or give guidance. Majority of Witchards are adults when obtaining their familiar but some families allow their children to have a familiar and some families see it as a rite of passage or coming of age tradition. The spell to bond a familiar must be done by another person if being performed on a child as children cannot perform magic until the age of 18.
There's a very serious sickness Witchards can contract after the death of their familiar. Since familiars cannot be harmed by non-magical means it's rather uncommon but because familiars are bonded to the Witchards soul it can be very deadly. This sickness is known as Familiar Breakdown.
Possible symptoms:
-Hearing difficulty
-blurred vision
-hallucinations
-coughing
-Breathing difficulty
-Headache
-muscle stiffness
What to expect: Hearing difficulty and blurred vision generally start slow followed by intense headaches, after the initial onset one may experience Hallucinations usually after waking up. As the disease progresses it slowly begins to break down the body causing death. This can take years to months, varying from case to case.
Cause: loss of soul bound familiars.
Made worse by: exertion, lack of sleep, severe stress
Treatment: Stress reduction and pain management, otherwise terminal
Rarity: 1 in 386 Witchards have Familiar breakdown
