Who was Bagrash Köl?

Pain of Truth

I know some details about the Eye of Autochthon, including that it works in the hands of mere mortals. But what was Bagrash Köl? I mean there was somewhere a text which says that he was more than a mortal (no idea in which book),but what do you think?I plan to set my players on his footsteps, because they`re on the search for his power. For that I have to detailed the great mighty sorcerer Bagrash Köl.Any ideas?

He's a powerful sorcerer.  How powerful, and what he was, is left unspecified everywhere I've seen it.  Think of him like a template to fill in your ideas.

I made him a Solar whose power rivalled that of the Scarlet Empress's, with all the Realm behind her, whose overarching goal was to find the Book of Three Circles.  He even built his own Book, a lesser replica of the real one, to aid in his search.

References to Bagrash:

  • The Autochthonians, pg. 234
  • Bastions of the North, pg. 118, 125
  • The Dragon-Blooded, pg. 32 (timeline)
  • Exalted: Players Guide, pg. 24, 153
  • Exalted: Second Edition, pg. 25
  • Manacle and Coin, pg. 11, 13

I've put together that ol Bagrash was either a powerful Sorcerer of the Celestial or Terrestrial levels (meaning either a powerful DB or Solar). Possibly using the Eye to resurrect an old Titan class superairship from the Deliberative, to rival the kingdom that the Empress was building in the opening years of the Realm.

For unknown reasons, he failed and the Eye betrayed him.

Thanks. But why were Bagrash, his kingdom,Ikerre and others destroyed by the Eye?Simple a failure (Botch on a diceroll)?Reached they for power that was forbidden?Angered they the Eye with their deeds?I mean kill your entire circle through a botch is one thing. But the past users of the Eye come all to great power through the eye,Bagrash Köl uesd it for years! And then a mere botch? That´s not satisfying after a long, long play.I mean, when I use a artifact for years, gather experience with it and learn his power...I want more.More to learn. To understand the true might of the Eye.Could it be that Bagrash&Co died as they try to use the full potential of the Eye and played with a power to great to understand?Killing your campaign and your group with bad luck...brrrrr!What did the former users to unleashed the unconrollable powerof the Eye?

Actually, no that I read back. Yes, they both were. Hence the confusion amongst Exalts on HOW they used it.

I knew Ikerre was, but I thought Bagrash was supposed to be something else..

I'd say he tried to make himself a god. That's always a fun theme, and of all the tabboos that the Eye doesn't honour, perhaps Autocthon placed that one restriction on its use? It's down to your choice: with the eye and a willpower point, you can do anything without risk of failure, so the wise user must surely have done something the Eye didn't like.

For fun concepts on the Eye and it's power, see the movie "Sphere". The Sphere even gives this beautiful feeling of malign intelligence, and it can apparently do anything.

Or better yet, read the book Sphere. It is, as is typical in these situations, better than the movie.

The Eye of Autocthon... It's like nuclear weapons in the hands of terrorists today.  It's their holy grail.

What if the eye was a Hearthstone?  Can you imagine the Manse powering it?

Well, I imagine that Ikerre and Bargash Kol were able to use the Eye because Autochthon designed it to be used by anybody, and the idea that only Essence-users could make it do things was something that was introduced via the arrogance of the Exalted.

Remember: Autochthon is very much Exalted's version of Prometheus.  He was one of the few, if not the only, Primordials that bothered checking in on what the mortal races were up to and helping them out once in awhile.  The Eye itself is an undefined entity, and may in fact be what Autochthon used as his 'workshop' given the near limitlessness of its power.
