PERSONALITY: Sloane is a very quiet woman, tending to stick to her friend group. She is very much a book-dweller and prefers to read her books over partying. Due to some past traumas, she is very well-guarded and doesn't let people in very often. If she does, that particular person is near-and-dear to her heart. Underneath her quiet exterior is a fun-loving, thriller-seeking woman who wants to live her life to the fullest. She does have a temper but tends to keep it under control pretty well.

  A cumbersome fire truck speeding down your street to help put out the blaze (or maybe cause it). Spiking her hair into tufts of liberty or making a mess of barrettes and hairclips, the color of her hair appears to be the only constant about her appearance. Covered in an array of tattoos, carefully placed in areas that can be covered by a long sleeve shirt as per her father's orders, she projects an air of punk, unwilling to simply identify one out of fear of being called a poser. She’s never been one to be held-down by conventional attachments, including material belongings or casual friends. However, her personal views can be said to be the exact opposite. Verbose, verbal maniac, coming up for air only when necessary (or when she finds the silent stares too much to handle). Wavering to the other side of the spectrum, she’s known to sit in silence, constantly battling for the upper-hand in situations where she feels that’s required. Still, she knows the time and places for such dominance battles, and she’s willing to “go for just about anything."
  
  A weed, letting herself run free when the stars align at the planet's rotation. An eclipse, leaving you with a marvel to watch unfold but a mysterious beauty, haunting. At one time, she used to be a ghost, leeching off the energy of others. Even now, it's apparent when she grimaces instead of smiles. When her sparkle is fed from a series of mishappen lighters behind her eyes attempting to catch fire, instead of a natural ember.   Her midnight drives offer constant solace, and don't worry, she enjoys sitting in simple silence. Bent over her workdesk, sketching in the backseat of her car, or bopping her head in a shitty diner while she paints, Birdie keeps herself occupied when insomnia cracks a bat at her skull. She appears never grumpy, though the circles darkening her eyes reveal otherwise. On occasion, her tone turns a sharp corner, reminding her of her obsession with the street sign Jac's car bent around, but she's quick to mend. A wavering mood, but she attempts to quiet the thunder roaring in her noggin. At the very least, she offers a haven to all those who pass, aware of how unruly she can be yet ensuring your safety.
  
  Ever-present and ever-caring, one would think that Birdie would've given up on eternal attachments, yet she remains as knitted to her choice few as possible. The distance comes not from herself outward, but herself inward. Very few know much of anything about Jac, about the ruin of Birdie's thoughts, though they see how reverently she treats the small urn on her bookshelf.   In Birdie’s words, her parents are far more interesting, so let’s begin there. Born in the woods of Washington, Nirvana took her first breaths with a rain droplet splatting into her eye. Her mom always notes this detail with reverence, as though the experience was any more spiritual than a normal birth. Alas, Poppy Sato holds onto her youth with a clamp she tightens once per year, as her 50th birthday passes for the third time in a row. Winston, on the other hand, does not agree with his wife’s fantasy world, but then again, he has been slighted by time and the stinging notion that his daughter no longer wishes to speak to him or stay for Christmas long enough to sing non-denominational holiday music together.
  
  In Birdie’s words, that is their fault.
  
  Jacqueline’s remains still sit in a small, ornate box on her bookshelf. It was the place Mariene, her favorite of the downstairs psychics, says has the most of her energy. Her records are stained with her fingerprints, wearing away at the vinyl. None of them have Birdie’s, as she’s refused to touch them beyond a momentary grip. They hum their tunes, forgetting ever so surely the feeling of the wonky record player spinning off-kilter. Birdie spins, hearing their ghostly muse speak for Jac.
  
  When she came home for Thanksgiving, a holiday the Sato-Gish family refuse to acknowledge, they asked, in unison, “Who?”
  
  It was harmless, they say. A slip of the mind, Freudian, Winston insisted, knowing damn well he was a folk musician, not a psychiatrist. He pulled at his lip ring, the one Birdie attended the piercing of. His shirt was black, menacing, but he turned into a softened bear, a gnawing pile of butter, when Birdie whispered, “My girlfriend.”
  
  “The one that died.”
  
  Poppy stood up to find the takeout menu in their junk drawer.
  
  Winston apologized. Birdie told him not to worry about it.
  
  “It has been what? Four years?”
  
  Three, actually, but Birdie isn’t splitting hairs.
  
  Well, now it’s been seven, and Birdie is more than willing to admit she's a grudge-holding bitch. Even for her father.
  
  Of course, it wasn’t just forgetting Jac’s name. It was the years she sat comatose, getting poked at and prodded off to school. They ignored the blood drip, drip, dripping from under her fingernails. If no one hears a Birdie chirp, did it really happen? Her parents sure think so.
  
  The New Year brought upon the harsh reality that no, Poppy and Winston didn’t have the money for another year at the dorms. If she had bothered coming home for Spring Break, she would have known that.
  
  Dragging Lucas into the scheme, New York offered the pair an apartment. Granted, a very small one bedroom in the West Village constantly populated by the smoke of incense and the pepper of questionably told futures. Forcing Luc into the living room, separating the couch and his bed by only a paper folding divider, Birdie flops onto that same sofa, and calls to her best friend to come sit next to her. The phone rings, jittering off the hook, and in a few months, Birdie decides to cut the bill and save to buy Luc a guitar for Christmas.
  
  Her parents wonder where she’s been, what she’s doing, but only Poppy has found the words to apologize, a vague shape of one in the form of a letter. Birdie has yet to read past the first line. Particularly because it goes, “Birdie, I don’t get angry at you often, but…”

  Rewinding the tape, let’s admit that there’s quite a bit more to Birdie than she’d like to divulge. Yes, quite a bit more.
  
  A spike-hair, red-brazen young woman obsessed with the capture of life in her vision. The world understood through her lens, done with just paper and pencil. How did we get here?
  
  Letting the days go by, adolescence passed abhorrently. A maelstrom of terror and grief, beginning oh-so-pleasantly. Jacqueline. The eye of her. Someone who felt more Birdie than Birdie actually was. A smile. A wink. The air smelled of patchouli and sandalwood, quickly souring when they aged fifteen.
  
  She broke her heart a week before she died. Birdie prefers to tell it that way.
  
  
  When she got accepted into NYU, it was bittersweet. She would be going, and so would Jacqueline. Just not the way either imagined at the dawn of sophomore year.
  
  Don’t drink and drive kids, a sentiment Birdie repeats across the scene, surprisingly keen on it. Her legitimacy is built on the fact that, yes, she lost someone. Yes, she lost someone who was going to band-aid her heart right before her mom pulled into on-coming traffic.
  
  Of course, Birdie didn’t know this until Thanksgiving, that holiday that unfolded it all.
  
  Winston had tried to come into her room, apologize. Give her a grace his father never held.
  
  “We all know how much she meant to you. It must kill you that she called right before.”
  
  “She called?”
  
  His eyes widened. Much like their youthful romance, this was a fact that he didn’t know either until after the fact. Poppy had been the one to answer the phone. When she discovered how her daughter reacted to the death of her girlfriend, a girlfriend neither parent knew about or knew how to approve of besides in a vague homophobic-yet-not manner, she left that detail out. The keeling over, the screaming sobs, were more than enough to convince her of the complexity. The need to refine a tangled web.
  
  Birdie left that night, tears leaving their mark on the concrete, as Poppy and Winston tried to compel her back into the house. A scared horse kicking ever backwards.

  Fast forward the cassette. Drowning herself in her friends, a failed band, three different attempted serieses, and a directed study under her favorite professor, and now Birdie’s graduated. One phone call if her parents, total, but they were there for her to walk the stage. She awkwardly gave them a hug, and her dad cried at her grown-up appearance.
  
  “You got rid of the barbell,” he noted.
  
  “But I’ve got like fifteen tattoos you can’t see under this gown,” she countered, tugging at the polyester.
  
  Poppy stood, tears welling, but she kept her comments polite. She complimented Birdie’s hair, fluffed up into rebellious spikes. “Nice way to subvert the dresscode,” she said solemnly.
  
  “I learned from the best.”
  
  They took her out to dinner, begged her to come home for the summer.
  
  “We want to fix things,” Winston explained.
  
  Poppy nodded.
  
  Birdie shook her head. For once, she hadn’t forced Lucas to come with her, but if he had, he would have hung his head and squeezed her hand.
  
  “I’ve got plans with my friends this summer.” Filling the space, she continued, “I’ve got some ideas for a series I want to work out. My professor, Kaito, thinks it has potential.”
  
  They didn’t ask her about what it was about (a story following a fairy into the human world, finally free from Hell), but they didn’t guilt her for not bending to their will. Instead, Poppy spoke up for the first time.
  
  “We’ll give you our new number so you can call and tell us when you’re available to come.”
  
  “Even if it’s just for a few days,” Winston added, quickly.
  
  They dropped her off at her apartment, appreciative of the business she occupied the air above, and gave both her and Lucas $30 as graduation gifts and left.
  
  Pause the tape. Eject. Time for something new, including the sickly sweet perfume of carnations and the sullen, sleepiness of a small town. A chilly shield heated by the sunrays, keeping you warm long after the campfire ebbs out. She forced him into some sense of adulthood, forcing him to become roommates after only a year of knowing each other. A domesticity found within Luc that she fears in anyone else. In some ways, he reminds her of Jac, but only in the sense that they both offered peace. A quiet Tupperware for her heart. Someone worth protecting, someone reliable, and someone she’d add to her dream blunt rotation. In fact, he’s already on it.   Zoey always wanted to be a hero.
  
  This was a natural trait of a child, especially a reader, especially one latched onto it as early as Zoey did. The earliest stories she remembers are fairy tales, magic and wonder and full of the promise of being special. She didn’t have to be a hero. A knight, or a princess, or dragon, or witch would do. Just something, really, so long as she was remembered. So long as she caught a taste of adventure.
  
  It was a slow realization the real world didn’t work the way stories did. And sometimes it felt like that held doubly true for her. Zoey was always quiet, a trait that for much of her youth was dismissed as just shyness, never quite given examination into why being asked to speak first caused her to freeze up the way she did, why the world seemed difficult to her the way it did.
  
  Zoey still finds approaching others difficult, and is firmly an introvert, but knows she enjoys having others to spend company with, and a touch of awkwardness now poses more of a challenge than her shyness does. Having found friends and connections in high school, she’s not willing to go back to being a loner, with whatever effort it takes. With that said, social skills have never been a strong suit of hers, often tripping over her own words or rethinking a sentence halfway through it. Despite her kindness and genuineness, there have only been a handful of people throughout Zoey’s life she’s been comfortable enough around to consider friends.
  
  Consuming knowledge seems to have always been second nature to Zoey. From stories and reading as a child to enjoying spending time at school, being taught anything new. Zoey’s lost count how many times she’s been asked what kind of kid likes to do math. Always giving a hundred and ten percent effort to homework assignments and having the most elaborate calendar planner in her class, Zoey was always a good student. That quality truly started to shine when Zoey left to attend college, suddenly thrust into classes that seemed designed for her, where everyone chose what they were taught and it suddenly became the norm to love the subject. Learning felt natural to Zoey, perhaps easy, and was a safety net she fell into with little question when it became time to choose her life path past high school.
  
  More than just being good at memorizing facts, Zoey started writing when she was a young teenager, the exact age having long slipped from her mind. She’s spent countless hours on the hobby, from just creating characters to short stories to the occasional attempt at longer projects. Despite the freedom Zoey finds in it, her writing is one of her largest secrets, with only one other person having ever seen it directly.
  
  Zoey’s preparation and need to stay on top of everything in her life stems from more than just academic ambition. Of everyone she knows, Zoey likely worries the most, about just about anything she has the chance to. Any situation she’s in constantly has the potential to go horribly wrong, and Zoey is constantly thinking about it. She’s often teased for being jumpy, reacting to most unexpected noises, and was once told she’d be terrible to watch horror movies with. She didn’t mind, not particularly liking them in the first place, but Zoey being vividly aware of being anxious did just about nothing to change the fact.
  
  One of the few things that gave her a moment of relief, a moment of her mind not being stuck in thought was running. It was something she did mostly recreationally, her method of keeping active, although she competed on the track team for two years in middle school. The movement, the feeling of wind against her face, the heat and sensation in her muscles gave her– would it be paradoxical to say the tiredness was the best respite Zoey’s ever had? It was the only physical activity Zoey’s ever taken to, being almost comically unable to lift anything heavy and too worried about disappointing teammates to lose herself in team sports in the same way, but it was one of the few things Zoey took pride in doing.
  
  Zoey, nerdy and awkward, stumbling over words and hiding behind anyone braver than her, with more nerves than spine, wasn’t much of a hero.

  Zoey’s father met her mother on a business trip to England. Whenever Zoey was told about it, it sounded just like something out of a love story. A chance meeting turning out to be some sort of true love, her mother leaving her home country to be with her father without a second doubt. Zoey didn’t think she’d be capable of making such a life changing decision like that, but her parents did. They got married within six months, and several years and two moves later, ended up in Canada, where Zoey was born.
  
  Zoey’s childhood was nothing exceptional. She was a bit of an outcast most of her elementary and middle school years, always a little different from her peers, one of the ones who stood out on yearbook pictures. She was quiet right from the start of her life, mostly left to herself, but between two years on her school track team and a couple science fairs not entirely unknown.
  
  It wasn’t until high school that Zoey got a sense of belonging, meeting her two then best friends, Blaise and Amy, settling into a group with them, experimenting with her style and appearance, and starting to feel like her grades might be worth something. It was in high school, too, that she realized she was different in more ways than just one, with the way Amy made her feel. She knew it was reciprocated, too, but Zoey was never able to act on the attraction, come forward with it, leaving their relationship largely undefined. At the time, all Zoey could focus on was keeping what she had found, not adding to it. The three years, however, slipped through her fingers like sand, until she was left faced with college offers and decisions that felt like the weight of many mountains over.
  
  Leaving home was the most terrifying decision she’d ever made and most challenging action she’d taken. Choosing a major was easy; she liked math, she was good at math, engineering was just something she had the ability for. Living away from home the first few months, on the other hand, was not easy. It wasn’t entirely back to being alone; university dorms helped, a lot, and Zoey settled into a state of kind of being, repeating the same actions, class and homework and sleep, a stability she couldn’t quite call content but maybe was as successful as she could ask for. She visited home every summer, but, it was never really the same back there, and her connection to her hometown friends grew more and more distant. With the four years of her degree, she found new friends, comfort in being where she was, and despite typically not being the largest fan of travel, was looking forward to the trip they had planned.   Valerie has often been described as the "mom friend" of any of the friend groups she's in. Besides having the ability to take care of anyone who is injured because of her degree, she can be like a personal therapist. She is compassionate and will do anything to help a friend in need, especially giving advice. She gives off an air of being very put together. She is great at telling people to look at the bright side, to keep their head up, and that she's proud of them, but she is not so great at being easy on herself. Valerie has a constant struggle with being overly self-critical. She must do everything right the first time she does it. Failure for herself isn't acceptable and asking others for help isn't acceptable either. She usually makes most situations harder for herself than they need to be. Unless she was actually bleeding out, she would never ask anyone to help her in any way. She is terrified of being seen as a burden so much that she distances herself from others as much as possible when she is going through a difficult time.   Valerie was born in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Her family came from a long, long line of people working in the fishing industry. Her father was no different. She still remembers running down to the docks to give him a hug goodbye every morning. Her mother actually came from a rich family with a huge presence in the Hamptons. She never really understood why her mother would leave such a comfortable life of luxury to be the wife of a poor fisherman but, her parents truly were in love. She has no memories of them ever fighting, just of them all going to the beach together. The beach days were mostly spent with her mother teaching her to surf and her father teaching her to fish.
  
  It all changed on Valerie's tenth birthday. For her celebration, she asked her dad to take her out on his fishing boat. Of course, he agreed and her mother came along as well. What none of them knew was that only one of them would make it back to land. They were just two miles out when a sudden storm struck. She barely has any memories of that day, other than the faces of her mother just before she was thrown from the boat and into the relentless waves.
  
  The next thing she knew, Valerie was waking up in a hospital room surrounded by a group of slightly familiar strangers. Both of her parents had died that day after being thrown overboard and drowning. No one really understood how Valerie survived but what they did understand was that she was now she was an orphan. Thankfully, her mother's family decided to take her in. And so she was moved from one seaside community to another.
  
  The Hamptons weren't like she had imagined they would be more. It was much less a comfortable, rich lifestyle, and much more a strict, jail-like lifestyle. Valerie was barely allowed to leave the house because her family fears she might "ruin their reputation". She grew close to her grandmother as she became older.   After she graduated high school, Valerie was supposed to go straight into a job working for her family. It would be easy money, she knew that, but she didn't want easy money doing a job she hated. Her grandma encouraged her to go to college because that was truly what she wanted to do. The rest of her family agreed to send her to college, but only if it was NYU. Thankfully, Valerie had good enough grades to get into NYU and she excelled in her nursing classes. The four years of working towards her degree flew by.   Reclusive and preferring his own company over that of others, Lucas has a cautious tendency and a subdued presence. It’s not uncommon for him to fade into the background—often stepping back to observe and taking everything in—but he isn’t too picky about his inevitable role as the mediator in any given group of people. Skeptical of others, very rarely trusting, it’s become difficult to know where he stands. It could be the monotony in his voice, the way he nearly never speaks up no matter how pressing the matter, or a short and awkward response, it’s easy to assume he’s no more than tolerating his friends. Lucas keeps himself at a distance in a way that is never intentional, and it can hinder his relationships. He always sees the worst in any given situation and may be eager to simply give up—over-relying on others to motivate him, which can cause others to be impatient or even a little annoyed by.
  
  Exceedingly loyal, Luc’s never left behind anyone that he’s cared for, and may have looked after and worried for even more than he does for himself. People are the one thing he won’t neglect, despite maybe coming off as a complete and total loner.   Luc’s childhood years before his brother was born were just as insignificant as the years he could not remember—his parent’s relationship was no love story, one he knew was falling apart before even they might have. For a time, he could rarely remember those few years; the last time he would see his mother and the time he spent during his middle-school years babysitting Andrew, but none of it he had regretted. Lucas became more of a parental figure to his brother than their father—when he wasn’t running around town for hours or indulging in whatever various hobbies and artistic endeavors, he was looking after Andy.
  
  As a kid he had been needlessly dependent, because it was the only way to find a place of belonging without drawing too much attention to himself. It only occurred to him now that in school, he had come off to others as terribly awkward, weird, or maybe callous. While he kept none of his childhood friends in touch, there had always been one person or two who stuck around, even during the years his newfound responsibilities began to shape him.
  
  It’s known now that his silence never ceased, not since the anxiety-ridden boy of his adolescence enveloped in tunes to deafen the world. Headphones playing songs on repeat, a pencil in hand, works only he would ever know he created, only he knew the metaphors laced within, only he could see. His passions were locked right behind the fear of embarrassment or maybe disapproval, one his dad had considered useless once unless he were to impossibly rise in fame—and the boy who constantly stumbled over his words and looked the other way could never achieve that.
  
  But it was never much of a secret. And he could barely keep it one.
  
  Sharing the skill of percussion in a makeshift high school band, Helena said she had never once lied when she said Lucas was talented, or all of the many things he rarely heard. Naivety struck him—though at first genuine, their relationship withered rather than blossomed, and he found that they never stood on the right soil from the beginning. Lucas didn’t want a girlfriend as much as he wanted assurance. Kind words he was deaf to. Ice on a hot summer’s day. Cherry-flavored ice that stung and froze the brain afterwards.
  
  Helena had a thing for the stars. And maybe that’s why Lucas was one too.
  
  There could have been times beforehand where her loyalty was backhanded and he had never known and probably will never know occurred. Freshman year of college her title of Girlfriend was revoked, and Luc instead leaned into the arms of Birdie Gish-Sato. He had always pictured Helena as his roommate, and now he was grateful Birdie had offered that to him first.
  
  Lyrics and guitar strings were no passion he wanted turned soulless, relying on what was once relaxation to carry himself—he gave that role to drawing instead.
  
  Present day, he’s no longer getting by on his own. At least it feels that way.   With dark, weary features and an affinity for wearing smudged charcoal around his eyes, Jasper looks the part of a rejected rock musician.   Here’s the problem. People don’t know Jas, not really. They’re quiet to a fault and zone out whenever they’re uncomfortable (read: 24/7), meaning they tend to come across as an alt stoner that hates university. And though this isn’t wrong, exactly, those that get closer to them tend to be surprised.
  
  Jasper is someone with a lot of thoughts and few ways to say them. Their main outlet is music, and so, despite majoring in something tolerable to their family, they pursue it with a feverish passion their teachers can only pray to get out of them elsewhere. A natural sense of rhythm and alleyway shows with friends as a kid make them a truly formidable drummer. The odd, exhausted frusteration they carry with them throughout the rest of their life seems to fade during shows.
  
  Though she loathes to admit it, Jasper is also a good teacher. She’s laidback and understanding with kids, though not as skilled at handling their uptight parents, and some of her friends have heard lately that yeah, class isn’t as shit these days.

  Mr. and Mrs. Katsaros moved from Greece twenty years ago for something like opportunity. They settled in Brooklyn, NYC, and founded two small stores — hardware and repair for the mister, and handmade baked goods for the missus.   It all passes in a blur, but Jas could tell you without a doubt that they were strange from the start. The prized youngest, the only boy, who would turn out to be both terrible in school and not actually a boy. Letters and numbers bounced around the page. The tallest, meanest kids would pummel them in dodgeball. Church made them feel like a sinner.
  
  Their only consolation was a woman named Joy, their elementary school’s music teacher, who was both selfless and incredible at getting hyperactive kids to learn piano and recorder. Jasper got together with the other losers to form a band, and, well, the rest goes on from there.

  The time comes for college. Nat and Avra have already gone off with near-perfect grades and the promise of whatever society will permit them, and Jasper knows that he has to do the same.   NYU’s shrink tells him he has ADHD, and he tries to get help, he does, but there’s not much money left for the youngest and none of his professors understand what to do when he spits the diagnosis back out. His grades drop dangerously and one night he crawls into Nat’s apartment with tear tracks on his face, shaking.
  
  “I can’t do this.”
  
  “Two more years,” She tells him, and asks him to explain. Her boyfriend’s a man with many connections, and he gets Jasper something called Obetrol, not strictly legal but not illegal enough to hurt. Jas takes it when he needs it. Things get better and sure enough, two years later, he waves at his whooping family with a diploma in hand.
  

  
  
  

  what do you fear?

  When Jas was in middle school, her math teacher used to say that she needed to be shut in an empty room to concentrate. That everything would make sense, that she’d be good, if only she could stop wearing headphones to class and staring at posters across the room. Sometimes, she’ll dream of it.
