joy division
overview.
Situated along the northeastern coastline, Cape Hope is an ill-named town. Each morning, a dense fog rolls in off the sea, covering the old and sleepy buildings like a blanket made of lead, unmovable despite how far into the day it is. The clouds hanging low overhead never quite break long enough for any sliver of sunlight to peak through, leaving the air perpetually damp with the promise of rain. And the people that live there…
The wooden sign standing like an omen at the town border reads, “Cape Hope, a home away from home. You’ll never want to leave!” Yet, the paint is chipping, smiling family drawn in a vintage fashion no longer an inviting sight—their eyes almost completely worn away now from years of storm-battering. The sign rings true, though. Most people don’t leave just as most people don’t come anywhere near if they have the choice.
Four years ago, a group of graduating seniors, along with their closest friends, took a boat out into the harbor to celebrate their newfound freedom. The next morning, one of their bodies washed up on the shore, displaying signs of anything but an accidental death. The only people that know what happened that night are the teens that were aboard that vessel, but their stories all stayed the same: no one remembered seeing her there at all.
Annabel Hope was only a few weeks away from her eighteenth birthday. With the title of Valedictorian and a Brown scholarship under her belt, she had a world of opportunity laid out before her until someone decided to take matters into their own hands, putting an abrupt halt to the life she’d worked endlessly for.
A month later, Mayor Hope announced the cancellation of the city’s Fourth of July celebration—the small town didn’t have much to offer in terms of tourism, and what little activity they did get from lone stragglers looking for something to do on the holidays could be kissed goodbye.
Mayor Hope hasn’t made many public appearances since then, but according to his secretary, he doesn’t go home much, either. More times than not, she finds him passed out on his desk, next to an empty whiskey glass and old police reports.
The wooden sign standing like an omen at the town border reads, “Cape Hope, the place where hopes go to die,” large, red paint sprayed over the original design. It doesn’t matter how many times town officials send someone out to clean it, the warning always finds a way back to the weathered surface.
Someone knows something—those words are a threat as much as they are foreboding advice—and it’s only a matter of time before the truth is forced out, especially now that someone bearing a startling resemblance to Annabel has just moved to town.

annabel hope
n/a
The eldest Hope child. Daughter of the Mayor and an accomplished student on her way to greatness, her death has had a large impact on the community of Cape Hope—bigger than anyone could’ve anticipated. Her unsolved murder weighs heavily on her father as well as those who may or may not know what occurred that night.
the other hope
open
Annabel’s younger sibling. While Annabel’s death has brought a great tragedy upon their family, they can’t help but feel as though they’re living in her shadow, even after death. They’ll never quite live up to the standards Annabel set for them to follow, but maybe helping to solve their sister’s murder will prove their worthiness to their parents.
the boyfriend
open
When a young girl goes missing—or even worse, turns up dead—the masses are always quick to blame her significant other. The affairs of the heart are complicated, after all. Living in the wake of Annabel’s death has been hard enough for him, but the accusatory stares he gets each time he sets foot outside of the house make it that much worse. He can’t seem to escape their scrutiny—spoken and otherwise—no matter how many times he claims innocence.
the best friend
closed
There’s many unspoken rules of being a best friend, but the one that she excelled at the most was keeping Annabel’s secrets. Even Cape Hope’s golden girl had her fair share of skeletons in the closet, but her partner in crime was notoriously tight-lipped. If anyone was to know about what led to Annabel’s death, it’d be this girl, but she still maintains that she’s just as clueless as anybody else on board the boat that night. A lie, perhaps, or maybe she was just too busy trying to keep secrets of her own.
the rival
open
Annabel may have been the stereotypical girl-next-door, but nice as she was, even she had enemies. Her list of academic achievements didn’t fall into her lap, after all. Annabel worked hard for what she had, which meant knocking down the competition on the way. Salutatorian sounds just as good in theory, but it’s not the absolute best, and they can’t help but be bothered by that. They’ve been second to Annabel in terms of grades since middle school, and forgive them if they’re not horribly torn up by her passing. Some grudges last beyond the grave, but maybe digging more into Annabel’s past will help them find the human in her, as opposed to the straight-A robot they knew her to be.
the new girl
open
When her family first told her of their impending move to a quaint town on the coast, she had no way of knowing the nightmare she was about to step into. She gets strange looks everywhere she goes due to her almost uncanny resemblance to Annabel—a fact she has still yet to discover—though that’s not something she can be blamed for. Fitting in is a difficult task when an entire community thinks you’re a ghost, and she can only hope that whatever’s at work resolves itself quickly, lest the burden of Annabel’s death fall onto her shoulders, too.

rules

rule one.
Please be kind and respectful to each other! I want this roleplay to be a safe space for everyone involved, so no OOC drama will be tolerated. If anyone ever feels uncomfortable at any time, please come to me and we can sort it out together. That considered, this plot revolves around dark themes, so if that’s not something you’re okay with participating in, don’t apply.
rule two.
This roleplay takes place four years after high school, but to account for any younger siblings/friends that may have been at the party that night, the characters’ age ranges will be 18-22. Please only use realistic face claims. No spot is first come, first served; once I post the CS thread, I will set a deadline, and once it’s reached, I’ll choose the most-suited cast out of all the applications.
rule three.
Discord is a must! That’s where most of our OOC interactions will occur, as it’s easier to keep things organized. Once I have accepted the final cast, those members will receive a link to the discord, but please don’t ask for it before then.
