What's dice?

Lord Aphrodite

To conquer death, you only have to die.
I've wondered this for a while, and I can't find anything to help me. I really need an explanation or I'm going to go more insane than I already am.

I'm on my phone, so you'll have to bear with my lack of examples, but there are several guides on Dice in our tutorial forum that explain it far better than I can.

@Grey is our resident guru, and he might answer any specific questions you have.

EDIT: Here is a link to the dice tutorials specifically. Tutorials

Long story short, you know how video games use a random number and probabilities to help determine if your attack on a monster is successful or not? Or how in some game, you have to have a certain reputation in order to persuade some NPCs to help you?

In a dice roleplay, people roll dice to determine the outcome of the choices their characters make, as opposed to freeform roleplay where we just kinda decide for ourselves.

On one hand, people like it because they don't know what's going to happen. On the other hand, people hate it because they don't know what's going to happen.

The cool thing about dice is that a well designed system not only introduces randomness but also allows for skill. Thus, it's not just [character does thing] > [roll dice] > [totally random and unrelated thing happens.] Dice well done reflects realistic chances. Every real situation has several potential outcomes depending on if something was slightly different and dice is able to account for that. Just like you take chances that things might work out better or worse than you imagined every day.

Anyway, that's my spiel. Dice aren't perfect, but they are very useful. They don't always make for the tightest story, but if they're executed properly, they evoke a powerful sense of realism.

Sorry, have fun rping. :P
