Mystery Man
Throughout the 2010's political extremism was gaining traction, extremists of all sides, on all ends of the Political Spectrum started Popping up, and then, during the latter end of the decade it flared out into violence. By 2020 it became quite clear that the Nations Police Force was unable to handle such a large number of rebel elements within the country. So they called in the Military. Well, that just escalated things. Soon enough, all that experience fighting in the Middle East came back to bite us when Roadside Bombs and IEDs along with all the other fun tricks used there came to the U.S. Pretty quickly everything went to crap. D.C. was constantly getting attacked, Politicians constantly assassinated, heck they had to replace the President 3 times. So much for the Secret Service. Somehow the Government clung on just long enough to broker peace but it came pretty close to collapsing entirely. About 3 1/2 years into the war though, they finally started to come back. Hard not to with nearly the entire world pouring support into the Feds. Not everyone may like us, but the stability of the U.S. is dang near essential to the world economy. Eventually, the Republic was restored, but only after 7 years of fighting, and even then there was still fighting in certain areas for up to 3 years.
