Roleplay Availability
Roleplay Type(s)
sorry if this has been asked before. im confused about the terms "application" "character sheet" and "placeholder" that i see floating around on rpn. could anyone explain to me if there's anything special about those terms that i need to know?? thanks ♥️

A write up describing what your deal and character is in order for the GM to review it and either determine if your character is a fit, if you understand the assignment, or to at least present the basic backstory of your whatever so it can be added in, or any mix of the previously listed reasons

These are all terms used most commonly to exclusively in group RPs, as far as I'm aware. Generally speaking, an application is anything you submit to the creator(s) of an RP to try and get a spot. They can include information about character concepts and ideas, proposing plot points, answering questions on your availability and RP preferences, submitting a writing sample... Basically any information wanted/needed by the GM(s) to determine player &/or character fit.

A character sheet will be all the information you're expected to provide on your character(s) and, similar to an application, it can be as simple/basic or involved/complex as the GM(s) decide to make it.

A placeholder is generally a temporary post you would put up while you wait to have the time &/or inspiration to fill out and complete a character sheet or an application- you would then replace the placeholder with the final contents (though if said contents are not totally final or complete, then the post would become a WIP- Work in Progress).

Hope that helps!

Just adding on to this bit! The word "placeholder" is the only one of these terms that's very common in other places, too. While this is what it generally means in an RpN context, it might also help to know what it means in a greater context as well.

Much like Ayama explained here, a placeholder is a temporary item/piece of content that is put into place until the final piece can be put in.

Very cool thing is that you can even break down the word and see its meaning there! A placeholder just "holds" a "place".

Kind of like how you save a seat for someone by putting a purse or napkin in the empty spot. To hold a place for them until they get there. :)
