What counts as a roleplay?

Specifically, a website I used to visit (but has since been shut down) hosted several forum-based games where players would collectively control the evolution of a species through an alien world, eventually reaching sentience. It was a voting game where players would debate the strengths and weaknesses of certain choices, then make a choice.

Would that sort of thing not count as a Roleplay, and therefore not be allowed here?

Thanks in advance for your answer :)

That sounds like it would fit into nation-building, at least.

Roleplaying is, in general, creating a character and describing their actions and speech within the context of a story. Here at RpN, the story is generally a collaborative effort, where the players have a lot of input. We also have Dice RP, which includes systems like Dungeons and Dragons (to name one of the more famous) and is generally a story created by the GM/Storyteller in which the players take part but don't have as much of a role in creating. Nation-building backs the camera out a ways, and the players there play out the actions of nations or worlds rather than (or in addition to) individuals.

You may want to read a few RPs in each section to get an idea of what's going on there, as well.

Sorry for the confusion! I'm familiar with Roleplaying in general, I just wanted to clarify whether or not something like what I mentioned would be acceptable on the forums :) So would the life-builder game count as a nation building RP then? :D Thanks for your help.

It sounds like one to me.

I don't actually have an answer, but my question is; if you made a roleplay like that, it would seem interesting. So, could I join?

I posted a topic about it in the Interest Check section, so we don't clog up this section of the forum. :P

In my opinion RP is something you aren't, do you live in a magical realm? can you build your own nation? if the answer happens to be no, then I'd count it as RP myself, just like Skyrim can be considered a world in it's own, it takes you away from the world your currently in and drops you somewhere else similar or even totally different then the world we have. That or drops you in a what if scenario, like what if I was on this earth and sudden Zombie Apocalypse. Even dropping yourself in a different set of coincidences can be considered RP, say RPing yourself if you were in Nazi Germany back in the day fighting back the Nazi's and killing Hitler, All of which is RP, this is why I have my own personal affinity for RP is it can come in so many shapes and forms.
