I've seen it both ways. I saw a picture earlier where it was gold and white. At least that was the way it looked to me. That picture you have in your post is definitely blue and black. I'm personally sick of seeing this. xD

White and gold. From a smaller view it looks blue and black but if you look at it closer;

It's in a darker lighting area, causing it's appearance to have a darker look, turning the white a bit blue and the yellow to a darker color.

I did some reading, and it is blue and black. People who are outside more often will see it as white and gold because their eyes filter out a lot of blue light.

Hm. Interesting. Didn't know that.

LMAO!

So I looked at the picture and immediately saw the dress was blue-black. Then I look up at the ceiling, wondering how stupid these people who called it white-gold were.

Once I was done calling them idiots in my head, I looked back down at the picture, and saw the dress was white-gold.

=.=

Wtf?

It's clearly white and gold.

No! You saw blue and black. D: this can't be. When you looked up at the ceiling, you must have created a connection for the aliens to beam the virus in your head. They have already taken you. It's too late. *sighs* I didn't want it to end this way Masque. I'm sorry.

to me, it's always been a sort-of periwinkle blue and brownish gold. i don't know how people see it as white and gold or black and blue, tbh.

( . .)

I see white and gold in the image, but I know for a fact that It's really blue and black in reality.

This has actually made it to the forums as well? Oh my goodness gracious. xD

[QUOTE="Makise Kurisu]It is definitely blue and black

This. Blue and black.

This is most certainly Blue and Black.

White and gold master race.

I find it puzzling to comprehend that it's actually black and blue though. On the picture it looks like it's a white and gold dress slightly in the shade, so if you'd put it in light it'd very obviously be white and gold. I've also seen the darkened pictures, where I still think it looks white and gold, just a lot darker.

I've seen overexposed pictures that are meant to make it look more white and gold, and I still see a hint of blue in it

Pffft, obviously its Blue and Black.

I've actually seen both; when I tilt my screen upwards, I can see white and gold. Normally, though, I see Blue and Black. My whole English classroom got in a huge discussion about it (let's just say we really got off topic), and it was pretty freakin' hysterical. I was laughing the whole time. Anyways, I see Blue and Black!

Kay. I'ma tell you all a thing.

They're both technically correct. Let me explain.

The dress itself is blue and black. This was proven by a separate photo of the same dress that is much clearer and easy to see. Below is one of those photos, my guess is from a catalog or ad.

However, the photo itself is most certainly white(ish) and gold. This can be proven by going in to a photo editing software and taking a sample of the color. I looked at it in my paint.net program and pulled up the hex codes for both sections. The trim section is 7B643B (brownish gold) and the main section is AFC6FA (really light blue).

So what's the big deal? Well, essentially what happened here is someone is really bad at Instagram filters. To put it simply. What happened is that the horrible lighting combined with a weird filter job messed up the photo into looking like something totally different. Some people see the photo correctly and say that it's white and gold, while in other circumstances, some people's brains will attempt to see through the filter and they will not perceive the shadows and distortion, thus they see blue and black. It's a classic example of cognitive dissonance. The eyes say one thing but the brain says another. Thus the confusion.

You start off by saying that the dress is "most certainly" white and gold, then go to say that your proof is the hex codes, in which the blue/white section is "really light blue". Sounds kinda contradictory to me.

"Some people see the photo correctly and say that it's white and gold, while in other circumstances, some people's brains will attempt to see through the filter and they will not perceive the shadows and distortion, thus they see blue and black." It has been proven that people who stay up really late and aren't outside earlier in the day will naturally be attuned to filter out blue light. This is the case here, as has been discussed many times. Whoever sees white and gold is filtering out the light blue in the dress.

"Most certainly white(ish)." Ish qualifier. It's very very very pale blue, almost white.

My question is, why do you care?

Why does anyone care, for that matter? You'd think nobody ever saw an optical illusion before.

Quite ironic, Crimson. You are asking why anyone should care, and yet you're arguing your point that the photo is white.

Now, can we all just stop being rude? Obviously it's an illusion, but who says we can't have fun with it? It's not nice to start being a bit rude about it. This was meant to be for fun, from what I gather.

It's blue and black .

Get your damn eyes checked. Or alternatively bow down to my superior cone cell count

The only thing the lighting does is make the blue seem a lighter tint than what it actually is. I have no idea how the hell the black strips are perceived as gold maybe if the color was lighter but as is it looks like a light blue dress with black strips than a blue dress with black strips

Wow. Lot's of open hostility here over a stupid dress. I ain't arguing crap here, I was just trying to offer a bit of scientific explanation.
