welcome to Uljin Penitentiary
→ about the roleplay

Inspired by Prison Playbook

Welcome to Uljin Penitentiary. Home of criminals of all shapes and size in South Korea. Our men spend their days eating, sleeping, reading, watching television and socialising within their cells. Once a day, they’re eligible for outdoor recreational time, a shower and an optional job to gain credits to use in the prison shop (including woodwork, working in the kitchens, or construction work). Church is every Sunday. All these criminals are nothing but scum to society. There’s nothing special about them.

But the men in cell block two, room thirteen like to think otherwise.

The six inmates have been sharing the same cell for the last three months, becoming more comfortable with one and another. Each male has a different personality which may cause them to clash sometimes. However, they have a growing brotherly bond blossoming. The men are either new criminals or recently transferred criminals with three years left on their sentencing. Visitation for cell block area two is every Saturday in which they get to see their loved ones and friends. Every public holiday, the prison hosts family days in which family are allowed within the prison to see the lives their loved ones are living.

Doubling characters necessary for ‘visitation days’ and after their release (family members or friends of your character)

Your character has either recently transferred to cellblock two, room thirteen or is new. Either way, they have 3 years left on their sentence. Literacy and proper grammar is important

Daily posting is not mandatory but it’s cool if you do

Mary sues, Gary sues and whatyado’s can get lost

He is one of the only Officers who will also treat you like a normal human being.

[div class=subt]Officer Kim[/div] Officer Kim takes his job way too seriously. LOCATION:THE FIELD | MOOD: TIRED AF | INSPIRATION: SEA BY BTS

It had been 1415 days. 202 weeks and 1 day. 33,960 hours. 2,037,600 minutes. 122,256,000 seconds. Whatever the time unit, it still remained the same. He was stuck in here for another three years. But at least there was a bright side to it all; he was way over his half-way mark now. Park Tae-Yeon, one of South Korea’s youngest murderer, was officially close to three years until his release date. And it couldn’t come any sooner. During his time in juvenile detention, it seemed that no one bothered to come near him. The news of him killing his Father spread like wild fire and all the other teenagers and young adults were too afraid to come near him. He was on top of the food chain back then. However, shortly after his twenty-second birthday, he had been transferred to where the big boys played.

Uljin Penitentiary.

He went from sharing a room with someone who was four years younger than him to sharing a much larger room with four older males in cellblock two, room thirteen. The last three months had been… well, it had been challenging. He came from a detention centre where people were too afraid to even approach him. Now he was at a penitentiary where people just punch you in the face for giving them a warm smile. I mean, he couldn’t help himself! He just smiled a lot when he was nervous! It wasn’t his fault that people can’t control their emotions and anger.

A large yawn slipped past his lips as the twenty-two-year-old slowly paced around the fence of the field. It was their outdoor time – an allocated hour in which they could exercise and mingle with those from cell block two. Probably the only time apart from working hours where you could socialise with people other than the inmates you roomed with. So, while everyone was either off exercising and socialising, Tae-Yeon continued to pace around the fence with his hands in his pockets and his head down. He brought a hand up to rub his tired eyes before running his hands through his hair.

Oh man, he was exhausted.

In the last five days, he had had the grand total of eight hours of sleep. He wished he could say that this was just a one-off occasion, but it seemed that for the last three months, sleeping didn’t come easy for Tae. Whilst in the detention centre, the doctors there had been kind enough to provide him with sleeping tablets to help him sleep at night. However, during his transfer, he was told that he was going to have to get reassessed by the doctors at the penitentiary to see if they could crack down on his insomnia. Well, he was told that three months ago. He was still waiting for his appointment. And now, he didn’t want his inmates to worry. So, most of the time, he just faked being asleep. It seemed to work most times. But today… oh boy, he was struggling. He had fallen asleep around two am but was awoken an hour and a half later by a nightmare. And that was it. He couldn’t get back to sleep after that. That was him done for the full day.

Tae placed his hand back into his pocket, another yawn slipping past his lips as he continued to slowly walk with his head down. Just don’t make eye contact with anyone, he thought to himself as he walked. Head down, keep walking, and just keep to yourself. That’s the only way to keep out of solitary confinement.

CHA MIN-JAE

but you know, don't you? you know but you just won't admit
darling, pride was doomed to be your downfall

The mood of the day was anti-social. At least, it had been since he got up at 4am in the morning, drenched in sweat and heart racing from the quickly fading remnants of a nightmare. Min-Jae was simply not up for human interaction this morning. So, of course, an hour in the field being the first thing on their schedule and forcing him to loiter in an open space full of people, was absolutely delightful. He was just thankful that the men of the prison had calmed down considerably after three months to get used to, gasp, a celebrity, a being clearly akin to the mythical unicorn, hanging around in their crowd.

Well, he supposed, it could be worse. He could have woken up in one of those awful, tiny solitary rooms. That was one place he hadn’t visited since a month into his sentence when he decided screw this and hopped on the cliche bandwagon of bribing officers. Which was really one of the best life choices he’s made so far… though that wasn’t a hard record to beat, all things considered.

As that thought flashed in his mind, Min-Jae caught sight of the flurry of blue butterflies etched into his skin in the dirty mirror hanging across the cell. It made him think of the man with the tattoo’s black counterpart which, in turn, brought a grimace to his lips. With a sigh, he quickly looked away, slipping on a thin white undershirt. He had never once had an issue with his own appearance, even when he was ten and being isolated in school for looking scary. Lately, though, he couldn’t stand to look at himself for more than a few seconds without the demon called self-hatred coming for his soul. Not that he even had a soul in the first place, according to the multitude of comments left under online articles.

He scoffed at his own thoughts; if he had heard those feelings from someone else, he’d have said they were being ridiculous. He guessed it was true that prison did things to your mind. Get over it, Cha Min-Jae, he thought to himself. What’s done was done, he simply had to overcome and move on. Even if the done thing was his life.

With that, he walked out toward the field where many men were already gathered. Min-Jae recalled the first time he’d walked out, three days into his sentence — the first two had been spent in solitary after he and Ahn Jae-Wong had tried to tear each other apart within maybe an hour of their first meeting — and he’d been immediately swarmed by a bunch of ahjussi asking for his autograph. It’d been chaotic. He was pretty sure Officer Kim started hating him right then.

“Cha Min-Jae, stop strolling and hurry up.” The voice cut through his thoughts. Speak of the devil and he shall arrive, indeed. Said officer stood at the side, eyes narrowing at how the top half of the prison jumpsuit hung off Min-Jae’s waist like a jacket. The first time he’d done it, the man had barked at him to wear the uniform properly. But a sing-song "money in your bank, officer" shut him up quickly enough, despite the glares that followed after. Anyway, it wasn’t like Min-Jae did it for fashion’s sake, for there was no saving the terrible suit no matter what he did with it. The suit was just too tight for his wide shoulders, having apparently been cut and sewn for rectangular beings rather than human beings with fluctuation in width at different body parts.

“Yes, yes,” he obliged with a hidden roll of his eyes, speeding up his steps by a minuscule bit as he caught up with the others heading toward the field.

Xu Lian
interacting with: Min-Jae & Tae-Yeon
mentions: N/A
location: the feild

Everyday, the same things on repeat.

Lian sighed, slumping back against the wall behind him. It was yard time, one of the more pleasant occurances in their schedule, but, oddly enough, Lian was bored. The temperature outside was rather nice, which was a plus, but still he found himself tired and irritable. This was concerning, to say the least. He was worried he'd snap at the first chance he got, and then promptly wind up in the infirmary with a dozen or so bruises to tend to. Maybe even a broken bone or two, if luck wasn't on his side (which it usually wasn't). In an attempt to restrain himself from acting out and doing something stupid, he'd taken to the sidelines, watching his fellow inmates go about their business with lidded eyes. This didn't seem to be helping.

Five years. That's how long he's spent in this place. Five painstakingly long years. Worst of all, he still didn't believe he deserved to be here. Sure, what he'd done was wrong, but there was no denying that what he had was a mental issue. He hadn't really been in the right state of mind when he'd lit those trash cans on fire. At the very least, he shouldn't be here for as long as he wa. But no; catch a guy wearing gang colors, add gang affiliation to his sentence. That's how it worked. After that, even an insanity plea would've failed. The world was so unforgiving.

Then again, Lian was still childish. He'd never grown up, believing that once he realized that what he'd done was wrong, he should be allowed to be set free. However, the reality of the matter was that he'd not just burned those trash cans. He'd spray painted offense murals and set abandoned structures on fire. He'd cheated in school and smoked god knows what just to get a quick fix. That was a lot. Too much to just apologize and move on from. There was no easy way out. He had to do his time and try to be a better person when he got out.

Unfortunately, that was easier said that done. Lian had suffered a lot in prison so far. It wasn't his fault. Okay, maybe it was, but only a little bit. People in prison just didn't seem to like how he reacted to social situations. Nerves, that's what he blamed. Conversations gave him anxiety, and that's what had him behaving... uncharacteristically. He couldn't seem to help it, nor was it easy to stop himself unless he was with someone he trusted to understand him. As ridiculous as that sounded, he thought it wouldn't be a problem in prison. He'd thought wrong.

It'd earned him a bad reputation with the other prisoners. Some of them were more considerate than others, and those were the ones he got along well with and was able to relax around. The others, however... they didn't treat him too kindly. He wasn't physically strong enough to defend himself, either, and the combination of all these fators had him finding himself constantly in bad situations. He couldn't begin to list how many times he's been sent to the infirmary. The guards who had to escort him then must be sick of him by now.

Rubbing his temples, Lian returned his attention to his peers. He caught sight of one of his cellmates, Tae-Yeon, pacing around the fenced in feild. Lian had distanced himself from the younger male ever since he'd been transferred to his cell. Tae was too cheery, too bright, too... everything. And yet, despite that, Lian kinda liked him. He was always smiling at the most inopportune moments, which was oddly endearing. Lian found a protective nature starting to develop when it came to Tae, which was weird for him, considering he wasn't really one to care about his fellow prisoners to that extent.

Yet there Tae was, proving that perhaps Lian really did have a heart after all.

Standing up, Lian brushed off his knees and shuffled over to Tae, somewhat reluctantly. "Tae~, mind if I walk with you?" he asked, a playful edge to his voice. "I'm bored and grumpy right now; I could use some company." Regardless of what Tae said, Lian began to walk beside him anyways. If Tae stopped, he would too, waiting patiently for some sort of response. From the corner of his eye, Lian saw Min-Jae exit the hall and walk out into the feild alongside several other inmates. Without waiting for Min-Jae to get adjusted to the bright sunlight, Lian gave a small, halfhearted wave his direction, gesturing for the other male to come join them.

INTERACTIONS: Kipsy Kipsy + OSWonder OSWonder | MENTIONS: dazzling dazzling

As the boy continued to walk with his head down, he noticed that there was something in his pockets – ah, only lint. He pulled out the little pieces of lint and took hold of it with both of his hands. For some odd reason, the first thing that popped in his mind was what if it was candy. There was no way in hell it would be candy. And if it was, he wouldn’t have been so dumb to hold it out for all the officers to see. From what he could remember, it was on the contraband list. Still… wouldn’t it have been lovely to have something sweet. His prison salary was low as he was still waiting on the money to transfer from the juvenile detention centre. For now, he had to live off the money he was getting from working as a kitchen hand, or from what ever money Nari was able to scrap up for him.

Tae had been so deep in his thoughts, daydreaming about sweets and candy, that when he heard his name he almost crapped himself. Startled, the boy could feel the tension in his shoulders before realising that it was only Lian who had approached to talk to him. Oh man. These last few months in prison… it was enough to keep anyone on edge at all times. The boy was quick to catch his breath, placing his hand over his beating heart. “Hyung, you scared me,” he said breathlessly before slowly nodding at Lian’s request. When he had first transferred, Tae had a sneaking suspicion that Lian didn’t like him very much. He wasn’t sure why, but it was playing in the back of his mind constantly. But Tae idolised the male, especially after seeing him cook in the kitchen. Then again, Tae found himself idolising all the men that shared the same cell as him. They were all so cool. Well, all but one. Ahn. But we don’t need to focus on him right now.

Instead, Tae continued to walk but now with Lian by his side. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Lian waving over at someo- MIN-JAE! Talk about people he idolised. A wide grin formed on his face as he saw the older male enter the field, the feeling of being startled now being covered by a wave of excitement. He wanted to run to Min-Jae and follow his every move. But… that was weird, right? People don’t do that in prison… right? Instead, Tae let out a controlled sigh and tried to bring his mind to the male walking with him. What to say… How do people even communicate when literally the same thing happens every day? And then it hit him – the news! Everyone loves the news, right?

Did you hear the news?” he asked the older male, his eyes wide with excitement as his finger were busy playing with the lint of paper, tearing it into smaller pieces. “The government has vowed they’re going to provide eight million dollars’ worth of medical and nutritional aid for North Korean children. Apparently, the drought in North Korea is the worst the country has seen in decades.” Tae let out a soft sigh, starting to ditch the little pieces of lint onto the floor as he gazed in front of hismelf. “President Moon is so cool. He’s even in Paris right now to speak with UN officials. I remember when I was little, Umma used to say that one day I could eventually be President Moon’s personal chef. That would’ve been really nice…

Well, damn, that was a depressing thought. Big fat chance of that ever happening, right? Tae let out another heavy sigh, wanting to physically punch himself in the face for bringing up something that ended up being depressing in the end. He couldn’t help himself. Rambling, laughing and smiling at inappropriate times were just his thing I suppose. Maybe it was something that he could focus on changing and improve on during his duration in prison…

Do-Yun had forgotten how dark and uninviting it was there, for he'd not been held in that damned cell for two whole years. Until the week prior, when he'd been caught with those fucking ramen packets that had been going around. Trust him to think it was harmless fun and wind up being caught redhanded.

As the man was led down the familiar concrete hall and out towards 'The Field', he felt a rush of unease flood his senses. It had been a week since he'd last seen any of his cellmates. What would they think of him knowing he'd spent the last 168 hours in a dark cell with absolutely zero human contact? A sigh left his lips. Why should he care what they thought? He was older than all of them; their opinions were meaningless to him. At least, that was what he told himself until he disagreed with one of them. Then it became a fight to prove his own opinion, not that he would ever admit that he was fully aware of what he did.

Just as those thoughts raced through his mind, Do-Yun felt the warm sun on his face. Though he squinted against the bright light, he couldn't quite fight the tiny smile that caused his lips to twitch upwards. He'd almost forgotten how nice it was to feel the sun on his skin and the wind in his dark brown hair. It was refreshing. Once securely within the field, the guard escorting him freed him of his cuffs, once again granting Do the freedom he'd craved for the past week. Yet the doctor said nothing aside from giving the older man a slight nod and then turning away to take in his surroundings. His dark eyes scanned the field, taking in the numerous inmates who were exercising or socializing. He didn't care for any of them, however. It was only when he spotted Tae-Yeon standing near the fence with Lian at his side that the man smirked to himself. Now those two he somewhat cared for. At least enough to talk to them after spending an entire week in isolation.

As Do began to make his way over, however, his attentive gaze caught sight of Min-Jae, who must've exited the cells only a few moments prior to him. He eyed the celebrity-turned-prisoner for a second or two before rolling his eyes to himself and continuing on his way to Tae and Lian. He'd rather talk to those two than be disrespected by the kid who was an entire decade younger than him. They always seemed to be at odds, though Do-Yun knew it was likely due to their similar domineering attitudes. Shaking his head to himself, he approached the other two young men, flashing them an amused smirk as he approached. "It's been a week since you two have seen me and you're waving at him instead? I see how it is," the doctor teased lightly, gesturing to Min-Jae as he mentioned him in his joke. He knew both Tae-Yeon and Lian were a little... obsessed with the guy. At least Tae was. But rather than annoy Do, it merely served to amuse him, for he could never imagine feeling that way about the celebrity.

CHA MIN-JAE

but you know, don't you? you know but you just won't admit
darling, pride was doomed to be your downfall

Spotting Lian waving him over, Min-Jae made his way to where the older man was walking with Tae... Yeon. He swore his mind would have done an eye-roll if that were at all possible. When did Tae-Yeon become Tae? With a metaphorical shrug, he swiped that thought out of his brain. It wasn’t like the form of address mattered much to either him or the other boy, anyway. He continued walking leisurely toward them, painting a smile on his lips as he waved shortly back.

As he got closer to them, however, he spotted Do-Yun also heading toward the duo in large strides. Right. A week was over so, naturally, the man was out of solitary. Once again, he frowned at himself for even knowing how long the elder had been sentenced to solitary for. It was an unfortunate habit from his job — making a point to keep track of everything about everyone so you could use it to curry favors or, for the particularly malicious ones, use against others. He hesitated about continuing on his path toward what was turning out to be a gathering of their entire cell. Too bad he was already only three feet away.

Having been distracted by the unexpected sight of their eldest cellmate, he missed the first half of what Tae had said and only caught, “President Moon is so cool. He’s even in Paris right now to speak with UN officials. I remember when I was little, Umma used to say that one day I could eventually be President Moon’s personal chef. That would’ve been really nice…

That’s…” Min-Jae began, a scathing remark already building in his head. He was hardly a fan of politics, knowing just enough to hold a conversation on the topic and nothing more. So, naturally, he had little reaction to the younger’s comment other than that it really sounded like something he would expect a much younger person, not in jail, to say. If he weren’t aware of the unusual innocence of his roommate, he would have already thrown some biting words about it. However, Tae had yet to get on his nerves today. He could afford to be a little nicer, he supposed. And so, he ended with a vaguely affirmative-sounding, “cool.

It's been a week since you two have seen me and you're waving at him instead? I see how it is,” Do-Yun’s voice cut into the conversation with a teasing lilt. Min-Jae glanced at him with an arched brow. Now, this one, he had no qualms being a little catty against.

Well, I mean, hyung,” he drawled, with what he’d have described as an annoyingly cheeky smile on someone else, “you did get thrown into solitary over instant ramen.

Not really something worth being welcomed back for, no?” He laughed, his tone a casual, joking one. In fact, it really would have been just the normal, sarcastic kind of joke he liked to make if they’d been at all on friendly terms. Do-Yun just tended to piss him off for no good reason, though. While he was aware he was being rather irrational, Min-Jae was the type to follow his feelings rather than what should and shouldn’t be.

That’s…

Tae inhaled, holding onto his breath. Every word that came out of Min-Jae’s mouth was precious to him. After all, this was Min-Jae. Jay. Tae was a hardcore Minnie (that’s the fan name given to Jay’s fans) prior to his time in prison and having been around the male, his love for the male’s music came rushing back to him. No matter if Min-Jae liked it or not, he was a heavy influencer. Especially to Tae. There had always been this… comfort that he found when listening to Jay or to Orion. When they sang in their songs, it was like they had created these songs just for him. That they were able to take a snapshot of all the pain and hurt that he was going through and made him realise that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. So, as Min-Jae paused, Tae held onto his breath. Waiting with anticipation as he waited for Min-Jae to finish his sentence.

… cool.

Oh God. He thinks something you just said was cool!
Tae thought to himself, a wide, toothy smile forming onto the boy’s face. That was so like Tae; that wide, bright, heart-shaped, sunshine smile that was hard no to smile back to. I suppose that was the reason why many people within the prison walls had dubbed him as the Sunshine Maknae. He didn’t care what happened for the rest of the day because this was the best moment of it. But it seemed that things got even better – because Do-Yun was finally out of confinement! If there was a hierarchy of people whom Tae adored, Do-Yun and Min-Jae would be levelled. Sure, he adored Min-Jae because of his music which helped him through the darkest nights. But Do-Yun had this presence about him that felt so comforting… Almost like Nari, his sister, was around.

To acknowledge the older male, Tae smiled even wider and gave him a respectful bow like he had done with Min-Jae approached them. However, that smile dropped as he heard Do-Yun tease about how they were waving at Min-Jae and not at him despite not seeing him for a week. Wait – was he being serious? Tae studied his face, hoping he could see some sort of confirmation… okay… yeah, maybe it was there. In response, the boy allowed a weak smile to form on his face before he bowed again as if to apologise. And then Min-Jae began to speak to the older male – rather informally also.

He wanted to warn Min-Jae that he may have been overstepping some boundaries, especially speaking to someone who was much older than him. But, I suppose that was the Korean culture drilled into Tae’s head. That you respect those who are older than you, even if they’re lawfully wrong or morally corrupt. However, some may have seen it was…. Well, ass-kissing? So, in an attempt to save Min-Jae from having his head cut off (well, that’s what Tae imagined would have happened), the boy offered a small chuckle. “Don’t listen to him Hyung,” he said to Do-Yun, trying to distract the older male from replying “At least you went for the good ramen. I was so envious. All I could think about while you were you confinement was how delicious those noodles would’ve been.

Okay, good Tae. Good. Now time to change the topic so there are no fights and no one gets hurts for being disrespectful. “Uh… there’s a family day coming up! Nari is coming! Is… anyone else… having anyone come? You know… family…. Or friends?” he asked the males, gazing at each one of them with a hopeful smile upon his face. That’s right – just keep smiling and nothing will go wrong.
