we are abraham's people

the backstory.

In 1910, Moon Ji-U stood before his Presbyterian Church and declared with great vigour that we were all sons and daughters of Abraham. The room roared, exploding into songs of worship and praise. This was his crystallizing moment where he saw his future before him. Brothers and sisters, coming side by side of each other and living out the promises that their Lord had planned out for each one of them. But there was something in the way: society.

Japan had just effectively annexed Korea with the Japan-Korea Treaty, and the Japanese were starting to take the arable land. Ji-U could sense that something bigger was going to come; something much worse. So, as he stood there making his declarations, he put through his plan. They were all to sell all their belongings; sell every piece of material possession they had of this world. And that they would move into the land. They would build their own houses, hunt, grow their food, and start their own community; live the way that God had intended for them to live.

This was the beginning of Abraham’s People Community.

Over the span of one hundred years, four generations of families lived within Abraham’s People Community. No electricity, no running water, no cars, and absolutely no contact with the outside world. Those who lived in the outside world were corrupt, evil, and were not humans. Abraham’s People were the only humans left on this Earth and were replaced with the Enemy in accordance with Moon Ji-U’s teachings. That was the reason why they stayed in this town they have created for themselves.

The boys of the town spend their day at school and their free time learning how to hunt with the older men and discovering the land that they grow their crops on. The girls, however, spend their days learning how to be housewives, being educated on how to clean the house top to bottom, cook mouth-watering feasts, and how to please their future husbands. A woman’s role in the world was to bear children and to submit to her husband. The man’s role was to provide for the family and protect. This is why it was so important to whom your spouse was to be.

Every Daeboreum (The first full moon of the year; Day 15 of the Month 1), Moon Chin-Mae – the leader of Abraham’s People, which was passed down to him from his father – pairs up the selected singles within the town to be married. If you were between the ages of twenty-one and twenty-four, you were eligible. Chin-Mae has the final say in whom is matched with whom, whether people like it or not. After all, he was the chosen messenger from God. This year Daeboreum is quite special, for Chin-Mae’s only son – the future leader of Abraham’s People – was to be wed to a special someone. And once he was wedded, he would then be told all of the family secrets; to become the next leader of the people.

the daughters.

the wife to be
The one the Leader deems to be the most desirable woman for his son and will bear him a grandson. All her life, her parents trained her how to stand, sit, talk, sleep, eat, drink and breathe as a housewife. Not just any housewife; but the most obedient housewife within the settlement. She knows their religion inside and out, and could walk the settlement with ease with her eyes closed. She would do anything and everything for the Leader and his family - and of course, she was over the moon to find out that she would be marrying the only son of the Leader. However, to The Son, he sees nothing but a brainwashed idiot. Marrying the Son

the revenge
This ball of fire has always been known as the settlement’s troublemaker. Always trying to go against any rules set up for them, the Revenge does what they want, when they want and where they want. Because of this radical behaviour, it has landed her family in some hot water multiple times. The Revenge never seemed to understand that for every rule they broke, their parents would have to deal with the physical beatings from the Leader. While they’ve been a wild spirit, their twin has been the polar opposite; which made them the perfect sacrifice for the Moon ceremony. After witnessing their sibling being sacrificed, The Revenge has harboured their feeling of rage and anger; waiting for that moment that she can take revenge on the people who sacrificed their twin. Marrying the Hidden

the only child
She was the miracle child of this little family. Their mother and father tried for so many years to conceive even after multiple miscarriages. The whole settlement believed that they were committing some sort of sin that was stopping them from conceiving. They were forced to repent despite having the cleanest records in all of the settlements. Finally, The Only Child was born - but with a deformity. It led the settlement to believe that the child was cursed, especially after the family could no longer conceive another child afterwards. They are the outcasts of the settlement, and every parent prays that their child won’t be paired with The Only Child, the cursed child. Marrying the Tricked

the sons.

the son
The only son to the leader of Abraham’s people and the heir to the leadership. He has always lived life with a silver spoon in his mouth, having people serving him every second of his day. He has never had to lift a finger with everything before him only a command away. Now, at the age of 21, it’s time for him to marry and start his own family. Every family member in the settlement dreams of the day that their daughter would marry the Leader’s son. It would mean a lifetime guarantee of safety, food and comfort for their families. However, things are starting to show that they’re not all that they seem and that this happy little settlement was based on lies and murder. Marrying the Wife To Be -- taken.

the hidden
The Hidden has been raised their whole life being told that the feelings that they feel are wrong. That the desire and love they have for certain people were evil and a sin, and they would have to pray it away. At the age of eight, their family tried to perform an exorcism after they had asked their parents why men had to marry women and vice versa. It was traumatic and has caused them to hide their true self for all these years. Even now as they stand to be married, there is something in the pits of their stomach that tells them that everything about this is wrong. Marrying the Revenge

the tricked
While many families in the settlement have generational roots, The Tricked is a freshly rooted tree. One day in Seoul, when they were only very little, their family was out for lunch when two older gentlemen approached them. They began to talk before asking if they’d like to come and have some tea with them. Within a week, their family sold all their belongings and moved to Abraham’s Peoples settlement to start a new life. The Tricked was often scolded by their parents when they would ask to play with a game boy or if they could watch television - being made to believe that these things were just part of their imagination and never existed. But even as 21-year-old, he can still remember going to the movies and riding in cars. Although, they have learnt from the past that talking about them openly leads to punishment. the beginning of the end.

the personality.

Do-Yun has an INTP-T personality type, known as the Logician. Someone with this personality type is introverted, intuitive, thinking and prospecting; seeking out unlikely paths, mixing willingness to experiment with personal creativity. He prides himself on his unique perspectives and vigorous intellect. He can’t help but puzzle over the mysteries of the universe like some of the most influential philosophers and scientists.

He often loses himself in thought – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. People with this personality type hardly ever stop thinking. From the moment they wake up, their minds buzz with ideas, questions, and insights. At times, they may even find themselves conducting full fledged debates in their own heads. Imaginative and curious, Do-Yun can find endless fascination in the working of his own mind.

From the outside, Do-Yun looks like he lives in a never-ending daydream. He has a reputation for being pensive, detached, and a bit reserved. That is, until he tries to train all of his mental energy on a moment or the person at hand, which can be a bit uncomfortable for everyone. Regardless of the mode he is in, Do-Yun is an introvert and tends to get tired out by extensive socializing. And after a long day, he craves time alone to consult his own thoughts.

Even though it may seem that he is unfriendly or uptight, Do-Yun actually has a bright, friendly side. When he connects with someone who can match his mental energy, he lights up, leaping from one thought to another. Few things energize him like the opportunity to swap ideas or enjoy a lively debate with another curious, inquiring soul. He also loves to analyze patterns. Without necessarily knowing how he does it, Do-Yun often has a Sherlock Holmes-like knack for spotting discrepancies and irregularities. In other words, it’s a bad idea to lie to him.

Ironically, Do-Yun shouldn’t always be held at his word. He rarely means to be dishonest, but with his active mind, he sometimes overflows with ideas and theories that he hasn’t thought all the way through. He may change his mind on anything from his weekend plans to a fundamental moral principle, without ever realizing that he has appeared to have made up his mind in the first place. In addition, he is often happy to play devil’s advocate in order to keep an interesting discussion humming along.

Do-Yun could spend all day musing about ideas and possibilities – and he often does. That said, the practice, everyday work of turning those ideas into reality doesn’t always hold his interest. Fortunately, when it comes to dissecting a tricky, multilayered problem and coming up with a creative solution, few personality types can match his creative genius and potential.

Wanting to understand everything in the universe, there is one area that tends to mystify Do-Yun: human nature. As the personality name, β€˜Logicians’, suggests, he often feels most at home in the realm of logic and rationality. As a result, he can often find himself baffled by the illogical, irrational ways that feelings and emotions influence people’s behaviour – including his own. It doesn’t mean that he is unfeeling. He generally wants to offer emotional support to his friends and loved ones but doesn’t necessarily know how to. And because he can’t decide on the best, most effective way to offer support, he feels like he may just hold off on doing or saying anything at all.

the virtues.

Analytical

Do-Yun analyzes everything that he comes across, from research data to the behavior of the people around him. This gives him the knack for spotting unexpected patterns and connections that other personality types might overlook.

Original

Thanks to his unrelenting imagination, Do-Yun can come up with creative, counterintuitive ideas that wouldn't occur to most people. Not all of these ideas are feasible, of course, but his willingness to think outside the box can produce remarkable innovations.

Open-Minded

He is driven by curiousity and an intense desire to learn everything that he can. Do-Yun tends to be receptive to new ideas and ways of doing things - as long as those ideas are supported by sound reasoning

Curious

Do-Yun is always casting about new pursuits, hobbies, and areas of research. One week, he might be obsessed with learning about farming, and the next, he might lose himself in discovering about building houses. When inspiration strikes, he goes all in on his newfound interest, learning everything he can.

Objective

He cares about the truth. Rather than taking comfort in ideology or received ideas, he wants to understand what's really going on beneath the surface of things. As a result, he can be relied upon to combat bias and misinformation, even when it isn't easy to do so - and they expect other people to be honest with him in return.

the vices

Disconnected

Do-Yun often gets lost in his own train of thought, even when he's around other people. When he finally resurfaces with something to say, he may find that the conversation has already moved on with him. This can cause him to feel disconnected from other people, especially in large social gatherings.

Insensitive

Do-Yun sees rationality as the key to a better, happier world. At times, he may underestimate the importance of such irrational values as emotion, compassion, etiquette, and tradition. As a result, he may inadvertently come across as insensitive or unkind, even though his intentions are generally good.

Dissatified

He can't help but imagine how things could be better than they already are. Do-Yun is constantly on the lookout for problems to solve, topics to learn, and new ways to approach things. Taken too far, this type fof mindset can become overwhelming, as he is constantly trying to reinvent the wheel rather than reliably addressing his needs and responsibilities.

Impatient

Do-Yun takes pride in his knowledge and in sharing his ideas. When it comes to explaining his rationale, however, he isn't always patient. If his conversation partner doesn't follow along or seems sufficiently interested, he may give up with a dismissve "never mind"

Perfectionist

At times, Do-Yun gets so lost in analyzing various options that he can never reach a decision. He wants to ge tthings done, but his quest for perfection can get in the way. He may also give up on projects that don't match the ideal vision of his mind.

likes.

Going for a swim in the lake on hot day, fishing, people watching, walking in the rain, when his mum plays with his hair, a warm, cozy bed.

dislikes.

Having to speak in front of a group (especially giving presentations in class or when having to read off paper), writing letters or essays, itchy skin (has allergies to strawberries), not getting a good enough sleep

the messiah.

The community sang praises and bowed onto their knees in thanksgiving to the Lord. For many years, they had been praying for the Leader and Mother Supreme to have a son. They had successfully had nine daughters prior, but not a son who could keep Abraham’s People’s community alive. What would happen had they not had a son to keep the bloodline going? Would the settlement fall to pieces? Would they be enveloped by the sin that lurked beyond the mountains? They didn’t want to even think about it.

But now, at the age of forty, Mother Supreme had become one of the eldest women in the settlement to fall pregnant. She barely had to lift a finger during this pregnancy, as everyone feared that it would affect the baby and ruin the chances of it being a boy. After all, the last nine times she had been pregnant, she had been going about her normal routine. Doing everything a mother should be doing. And it resulted in nine girls. This time around, the community begged for her to relax. They offered their daughters and wives up to tend to the Moon family’s every need.

It seemed to have worked because on the first moon of the winter solstice, they welcomed Moon Do-Yun into the world who came in kicking and screaming.

He may have not known it there and then, but this was a ground-breaking moment for their settlement. The people of the community laid on the floor in tears, praising and giving thanks to the Lord that they would have a son to continue leading them in the future. They had lived in intense fear that they would not be able to keep pursuing their dreams of living in this happy utopia for the rest of their lives and the generations to come. In a way, Do-Yun was their messiah.

the words.

There were immense expectations upon Do-Yun’s shoulders from the moment he took his first breath. It was like he lived under a microscope, shown on display for the world to see and for people to analyse. He was constantly being watched and for some reason, constantly being worshipped by the community around him. As an infant, he wasn’t sure why. As he started school, it only grew worse.

For some reason, everyone had this expectation that he was some magical, intelligent higher being. They believed that the son of the Leader would have the same knowledge and mindset as his father. That he had been born into greatness and would live out that greatness with such ease. On his first day at school, he had been placed in the middle of the classroom’s seating plan. Over the years, he remained in that same spot. And over the years, as the children began to learn how to read and write, he began to struggle.

He felt ashamed of himself. Everyone had these massive expectations of who he was and going to be; and yet as he sat there in class, looking at the board, everything looked muddled up. The letters were wavy, refusing to stay still for even a second so he could read what was going on. He felt too embarrassed to ask the teacher what was happening, so continued to push through. A couple of weeks later, the teacher noticed the difference of work produced between the other children and Do-Yun. He didn’t want to assume that there was anything physically wrong with Do-Yun – after all, he was the next leader. Instead, he saw it as a reflection of his own teaching and that he was failing.

He moved Do-Yun closer to the front of the room, and ensured to keep a watchful eye over the boy. However, he movement made no change to his work much to the teacher’s dismay. He was desperate to ensure he succeeded at his job. Afterall, if the Leader ever found out that his son was failing his classes, it would land on him, not Do-Yun. So, he gave Do-Yun that extra help. He gave him pre-filled out tests to copy off from. He gave him extra one on one time together. He even changed the grades to make Do-Yun a top student.

All to keep the Leader happy

the jacobs.

As Do-Yun grew older, his father began to encourage him to participate in Higher Council work. However, Do-Yun didn’t want to be apart of this elite club (despite knowing that eventually he would have to take over the whole community). He wanted to use his hands and work; he wanted to search out for deer and other wild animals, kill them and then provide it to the community. He wanted to be with nature and surround himself with it. His father wasn’t very pleased with this sort of enthusiasm to be so far away from the Higher Council.

One day, his father instructed the Hunters that Do-Yun would be coming to work with the Higher Council for the day. He had no choice but to follow his father and see what the big deal was. As they walked together into the Higher Council chambers, his father explained to him that today they would be having a conversation with Mr and Mrs Jacobs. They were second generation settlers whose grandparents were foreigners to Korea. Apparently, their crops and chickens had been dying lately and no one could explain why.

As Do-Yun entered the β€˜meeting room’, there he found Mr and Mrs Jacobs – arms tied up above their heads with rope, attached to the wall. Their tear stained cheeks and trembling lips were not a sign of a pleasant conversation they were apparently meant to have. The Leader stood before them, and began to question them about their crops and chickens. Mr Jacobs trembled in fear, sobbing that he had no idea why they were dying. Do-Yun’s father didn’t seem to like the answer. With a snap of a finger, the Higher Council staff within the room began to violently whip the couple. Tears and blood splattered all over the walls, ceiling and floor.

Do-Yun felt sick to his stomach. He had known that people had been beaten in the past for their sinful ways. But the couple before him, did they really deserve any of this? Of course not. Do-Yun wanted to stop what was happening before them. But, for some reason, he couldn’t seem to find his voice. His legs were frozen solid. All he could do was stand there, watching these two innocent people scream and cry in agony as their flesh was torn by the whips.

It became one of his biggest regrets in his life.

the family.

Moon Chin-Mae, 62 | β€œThe Leader” | Do-Yun’s Father

The Leader of Abraham’s People. Just like his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather, Chin-Mae is the leader of the religious group. His position was passed down to him, just as the religious texts have instructed, and he will pass on down to his son, Do-Yun, when the time comes.

All this life, he has aimed for a son. After having nine daughters, he almost gave up hope. The community that they had built was starting to show cracks and fault lines. Without a son to follow the bloodline, everything would come crumbling down. Thankfully, Do-Yun was born. And from that moment, he made sure to put all his time and energy into ensuring their son grew up to be the fine, fit leader that would lead this community. And, when the time came, he would be the one to show Do-Yun how the community was run behind closed doors.

Do-Yun has always been somewhat intimidated by his father. After all, he is the great leader of this community. It felt that every second he was with him, he was being moulded into this future leader, becoming less like himself along the way.

Kim Mago, 61 | β€œMother Surpreme” | Do-Yun’s Mother

Her parents believed from the moment she was born that Mago was made for greatness. That’s why they decided to give her the name Mago; named after the creator Goddess in ancient Korean mythology. The legend of Mago expresses the interconnection of dreams and reality, past and present lives, karma and destiny, microcosm, and macrocosm. She created all of nature and its geographical formations of the universe.

Ask anyone in the community, and they would tell you that Mago is the sweetest, kind-hearted woman you could ever meet. She works hard to keep her husband happy, but also to ensure the women of the community feel safe, secure, and supported. While she is the mother of ten children, she likes to remind the community that she is a mother to all. If they ever have any concerns, they are welcome to come and speak to her, and to receive some wisdom (of course, it’ll cost you; one of the juiciest pears growing on top of the mountains as an offering).

Mago and Do-Yun’s relationship is one full of nature and nurture. As there was such an age gap between him and his sisters, it gave Mago more time to spend one on one time with him. She could see his struggles at school, and because she couldn’t read or write herself, she felt helpless to offer him support. Instead, she ensured to make all his favourite meals at dinner to make sure he had a happy heart (and stomach!).

The sisters: Moon Ae-Ri (40), Moon Cho (39), Moon Eunji (38), Moon Hana (36), Moon Heejin (35), Moon Hyuk (33), Moon Jang-Mi (32), Moon Sang-Hee (31), Moon Gyeong (29).

When Do-Yun was born, his eldest sister, Ae-Ri, was already nineteen years of age. By the time he was two, she was off and getting married. After that, he didn’t see much of his sister; and the same went with all the others. Once they were married and off with their husbands, the only time he seemed to see them was at big festival events or if they happened to randomly drop by for a few moments. Quite often, he would have no idea who these women were; they would have to remind him that they were his sisters to which he'd respond with an β€œahh, okay”.

Out of all the children, Gyeong and Sang-Hee were the only two sisters that he spent most of his time with. Even then, it wasn’t an awful lot. He would see them at mealtimes and then before bed as they sat together for their religious stories and texts. In a way, he felt completely detached from his siblings. He had hoped that maybe one day his parents could bring another son into the world, despite knowing how old they were (and the fact that they had him was a miracle in itself). But honestly, he just didn’t want to feel so alone anymore in a family so big.

So-ri has a very soft look to her. Her big brown eyes allow for a very doe-like appearance. Her long dark brown hair flows down her back until it reaches the middle of her spine. So-ri's hair is very thick and wavy in nature, so she tends to have it pulled up whenever she's doing any work around the house or at the stable.

She stands at an average 5'3. Using her height to her advantage, she seems to fall into herself to appear smaller than she already is. Because she tends to spend a lot of her time in the sun (which is where her nickname Sunflower came from) she has a slight sunkissed tint to her skin. So-ri is pretty clumsy, so she has a few faint scars along her arms and legs that serve as a reminder of her mistakes. She doesn't take them lightly. Thanks to her complicated birth along with her lack of hearing, one of So-ri's legs is shorter than the other which causes her to walk with a limp.

Chestnut hued and peculiarly tidy, despite his lack of care for it. Usually appears lighter than it is when under the gaze of the sun.

Wells of light brown that are always seeking; rare are the times that they're seen to be still, and when they are, whatever they're set on is sure to meet a piercing stare saturated with either morbid curiosity or poorly hidden mischief. It would be easy to mistake Min as little more than fickleness bundled up in a fox-like demeanor. Older members of Abraham's People consider (albeit in silence, as is so generously deemed by the rules) his roguish nature to be the lingering influence of his time spent beyond the settlement in the company of demons. Most others believe it be a passing attribute that will, as the Lord decrees, be diminished by time and faith.

They couldn't be any more wrong. Min is nothing if not a closeted nonconformist; he revels in flirting with danger and deliberately dances at the edge of a deep pool of "sin", a precipice he'll peer into for long lengths of time without ever fully giving into its allure. He's carefree, clever and every bit as silver-tongued as he seems, yet he'd offer another being his last morsel of food or the shirt off his back if they were in need... just be prepared to wonder who he'd swiped them from.

There are few things he enjoys more than speaking his mind - or some small part of it at least - and he's an advocate of honesty to a fault. Don't be surprised to find out that his spoken truths have been colored, however, for he believes that truth, like most other things in their sheltered little lives, is a matter of debatable perspective.

The contrarian in him struggles to keep itself contained under the threat of traditions that even now, years after his family's integration, still seem foreign. And although he's had a habit of keeping emotions at arm's length since boyhood, denying any notion of sentimentality, the young man has managed to never forget things the Council would call fiction. What he holds in his head is a past he knows to be genuine, not one woven within a twisted illusion of harmony.

Memories of this former life are his most cherished, safely kept possessions: blurry images of a massive body of water stretching off into the horizon; air lashing at his face as he sticks his head out the window of a moving car, his mother's frantic voice somewhere in the distance; the phantom feel of black and white keys against his fingertips. Seldom is he feeling alone enough to allow it, but there are occasions when he'll close his eyes and allow his fingers to move as though the instrument was no longer just a figment lost within a dreamlike hazeβ€”the songs that his father taught him a lifetime ago no longer heard, yet still very much felt.

Not that Min would ever let anyone see that.

Family

The Cheong family has always bordered on sticking out amidst the community, and not always due to their newly planted feet or Min's tendency to talk a little too much.

Ben, his father, stands a head and a half taller than most men he walks beside, with a powerful build that'd put a brick wall to shame. He's rather pale, fair-haired and is frequently seen with a bushy beard masking his face. This alone could make him a beacon, but appearance is the only thing in which Ben purposefully shines; he is one of the most quiet, humble, selflessly idealistic men that others may come to know. It's Ben who's covertly instilled into his son the ideal of never forgetting where he's from, nor losing sight of where he wishes to go, no matter where that may be.

Having a husband with such a presence has allowed his mother to keep to the peripheral vision of others in most cases. It's a thing she's rather grateful for, as Ji-soo prefers her penchant for closely studying the people around her kept well-hidden. Min has never known anyone as intelligent or insightful, and she's supported him like no other from the very moment he was born; she's fed into his inquisitive appetite - within her own sense of reason - every step of the way. Ji-soo's recently announced that they'll soon be welcoming a new addition to their little family.

Reserved as they both are, Min has caught the two sneaking in intimacy at home that he's never seen other parents display, whether it be slow dances in the dark before bed or shared whispers, laughter and playful glances. Although he appears entirely disinterested in affection of any kind and seems to value his independence above all else, their relationship has blessed him with an idea of what he secretly wishes to someday have. To say that he does not look forward to being forced into partnership with someone not of his own choosing would be a vast understatement.

likes
sarcasm, stimulating conversations, mysteries, hearing (but mostly telling) bad jokes, anything unconventional or perceived as "abnormal", subtly pushing boundaries, pondering possibilities, music wherever it can be found, made or heard

dislikes
overbearing rules or people, tightly packed crowds, closed mindedness, being robbed of freedom and flexibility, authority complexes, mosquitoes, the thought of having to remain in the settlement for the rest of his life

fears
Kept secret from all except his family is his haphephobia; physical contact is something he's grown to tolerate when it's absolutely necessary, but the idea alone of closeness with another is enough to unsettle him, and touch that isn't expected can cause him to freeze up entirely. To combat it, he always keeps a pair of self-made gloves on his person and is most often seen with his hands in his pockets. It's the only thing about himself that Min truly hopes to one day change.
little more

memories

illusions.

Long ago, Min felt no love greater than that he had for music. In that distant past, they'd often visit a town square where musicians of all types gathered, and there they'd sit under the sun, listening to people play out their passions on instruments that Min could no longer name if he tried. It was a time where wide smiles were what he wore most oftenβ€”a time where he'd run free until his legs would refuse to take him any further and ask questions until his tongue could grow no looser.

The day his mother brought home a piano alongside his father's promise to teach him to use it was a moment that he knew would live with him forever. Ben would often tell him that music was one's very spirit speaking through the body; it turned out Min had such a talent for rhythm even at his young age, and he remembered feeling a great sense of contentment when his parents watched him pour his soul into every note. That feeling grew to pride when he later played at the same quaint square where he'd witnessed others sharing their passion for music, met at the end with applause so loud that he could have sworn he'd felt it was swelling from within his own chest.

Min's parents never did tell him what changed back then. All he could recall were glimpses of strangers seated with his parents through the gloom of the crowd, their faces blending awe with grim contemplation. If asked now, what he'd remember of the days after is that everything they owned, from family photos to the house they'd come to call home - from his very bedsheets and clothes, to the same piano he'd come to believe would forever be a conduit of feelings he'd bury within himself - was left behind in favor of a new future.

interim.

Despite his fondness of change, acclimating to Abraham's People came slowly for Min. Ji-soo and Ben did what they could to mitigate their son's inclination of speaking about the world they'd come from. He was subjected to stern lectures any time he'd bring up aspects of their former life, and while their words came down with the weight of a judge's gavel, he knew them to be far from strict cruelty. Perhaps, he'd sometimes think, his parents simply wished to protect him from the far more crushing weight of the Leader's harsh judgement.

Their finicking could only sway his mind so much, however. Min had come to know more than a few holier-than-thou personalities within the community, and yet one boy in particular stood out: a certain Kim Mal-chin, who flaunted an overabundance of pride and wore faith like a badge upon his sleeve. Their encounters remained cordial for a time, but once during their teenage years, while spending their free time skipping stones beside the lake, Mal-chin overheard Min telling a small crowd of boys that it wasn't demons that he'd seen outside the borders of the settlementβ€”the beings they'd been told were twisted deformities that would eat them through to the bone were nothing more than plain old people, just like them.

Mal-chin didn't take kindly to this. Min remembers well the way Mal-chin had grabbed him by the collar, told him how he spoke of heresy and would burn for it, though only after the Higher Council heard about what blasphemies he'd been speaking. Of course, Min thought it'd do no harm to shoot back with his own thoughts, telling the other boy that, "I'd try to see things from your perspective if I could, but it seems I can't get my head that far up my own ass."

Maybe it was the heat of the day causing an irritation in him, or the fact that his rocks hadn't managed to skip more than twice a throw, or maybe, just maybe, Mal-chin had simply been bottling the desire to hold power over someone for longer than anyone else knew. Min was sharp-minded and had an even sharper tongue given the right circumstances, but his skill at sparring was exclusive to wits; the first punch Mal-chin threw sent Min reeling, and the blows that came after came harder than each one before it, until he was tripping into the cold embrace of the lake. He claims not to recall much afterward, but it displays itself everyday in his behavior and seems too vivid when he relives the memory, for in it are grasping, clawing hands of a true demon, attempting to wring the life out of him beneath that water.

The Higher Council never did hear about what Min had said to the other boys, but neither did they hear of the near drowning that day. Most have forgotten about the incident entirely. One thing's certainβ€”Mal-chin managed to do what Min's parents never could, as he never again spoke of the world he'd come from so freely.

inquiries.

These days, Min has roped himself into the educational sphere, albeit under the skeptical gaze of the other teachers. All throughout his life, his father has upheld the importance of learning from the past and understanding the way it can make changes within oneself. While the young man has taken most of these teachings to heart, his own pondering more frequently sets itself upon the future; he believes that life should be full of possibilities, absurdities and ironies. Nuance is something he sees as a necessity, and who was there with the most potential to explore those nuances or question the things around them than young minds? Min lives out a silent rebellion attempting to instill concepts of free-thinking and individualism within the youth he teaches.

Hearing about his mother's pregnancy came as a bittersweet surprise. As of late, he's been considering how difficult it might be to leave the settlement before he's announced for marriage in Daeboreum... everything from framing his own death to simply sprinting until he reached a place - any place - other than the settlement. If there ever was a soft spot of his, it was family, and having another member soon to join it makes the idea seem much more distant.

    hair

Tying her hair up is never an option. It is a restraint; both physical and mentally: Kyung Mi sees herself as not an object. A woman fierce and bright, Kyung Mi allows her hair to flow freely and will struggle dearly when it is ultimately cut. Her hair is her freedom. Her locks sustain a maple brown colour with reflecting light turning them a reddish colour. The strands sit wild however upkeeping the appearance of smoothness, connoting wild spirit.

    eyes

Kyung Mi's eyes are surrounded by short eyelashes, giving them a stern and intimidating look. The iris is a dark brown which would appear almost black if there was little sunlight. Eye brows are narrow, set above and upon close inspection are untidied and somewhat frizzy.

When she was a child, her eyes where bright and wondrous; full of adventure and excitement. After the sacrifice, they have succumbed to darkness, swallowed by grief, anger and ultimately revenge.

    body type

Standing at the lower end of five feet, Kyung Mi is not tall but however small the fire it is still raging hot. Her arms refine muscle mass despite legs looking frail and thin. The muscle was retained through house-hold chores and general tidying that, to pass time, would turn into a secret game of strength. The palms of her hands are calloused and her finger cuticle are untidy and shredded through a new, nervous habit of chewing. The habit had appeared after her sister's sacrifice and reflects a busy, unnerved mind.

    ailments

Scars along her knees are not something she is conscious about and much to her parents disgrace are things she is proud of. Unlike the other girls, who are told in the beginning who they are and what they are leading to be, Kyung Mi dreamed (never opening her mouth) she could adventure and hunt. However, now, her childhood fantasies have diminished into loss hope.
    style

Silken dresses are worn. Kyung Mi does try her best to wear such attire however it almost always ends up becoming ripped, torn or modified (loosened neck, rolling up sleeves) to her liking: much to her mother's dismay. To attempt to rectify this, her mother creates dresses that are coloured beige, brown and cornflower blue. Perhaps this could reflect the colour of bumps and bruises?

  • Screenshot 2022-03-23 194108.pngA being of pure longing; fueled on daydreams, what-ifs, and an insatiable yearn for escape. Once a child incredibly passionate and outgoing, now a young timid man who melts into the background. Blending himself into the painting until he’s completely indiscernible. Ha-neul has learned that lying bears no consequence, yet he apologizes in his prayers each night. He’s learned that absolute truth is based on belief rather than fact, as long as that belief correlates with the morals and rules of the community.

In many ways, he’s a ghost. A wandering soul void of substance, repeating the motions. He does as he’s told when to do it. Follows the patterns that have been engrained in his bones. Average at everything, as excelling draws too much attention. He smiles and obeys. Never asks question beyond β€œhow are you today?” or β€œam I doing this right?”. A small cog in a grander machine.

At least, that’s what the Community of Abraham’s People sees. Someone once unruly turned unobtrusive and inconsequential. Ha-neul, however, is more relentless than anyone would think. He’s a stubborn, selfish manipulator who was kicked to the floor at took it as an opportunity to bite at his attacker’s ankles.

While relatively harmless, there is a bitterness that grows in him from his inability to express himself. Like an itch he can never reach, and only when he is alone or in trusted company can he truly satisfy it. Ha-neul likes to sing. Belch at the top of his lungs and howl at the sky. He likes to draw, flooding scraps of parchment with sketches of people and nature. He wants to learn how to cook like his mother and sisters. He wants to feel wanted by a man, as well as be able to want a man without the stigma suffocating him.

This gentle caged bird has a habit of crashing into the bars. Secretly destroying property around the town, or simply whacking the trees in the forest just for some form of catharsis. Of course, no one suspects this mild-mannered nobody, and if he’s feeling particularly bitter, he’ll go out of his way to frame someone for what he’s done. Destructive as he may be, Ha-neul also takes his secrets with him to the forest. The trees know all his insecurities, wants, and ill-doings. Alone in nature is when he speaks from the heart, releasing all the words he didn’t say but so gravely wanted to. There’s no shame or rules in nature, just pure atavistic instinct, and Ha-neul takes full advantage of it. Venting into the treetops before returning home, smiling politely and fulfilling his duties as always.
