Warhammer is a tabletop wargame, with focus on tactical combat between dozens or hundreds of soldiers. Warhammer Fantasy focuses on fantasy conflict, with mass unit formations and magic shaping tactics. Warhammer 40K is a sci-fi approach, favoring vehicles and fire teams (although hordes are still a perfectly viable option). This thread is both for people interested in learning more about either game and for people to meet up and arrange matches. Lately, Holy and I have been using Google Docs (drawing) to simulate the tabletop, with fantastic results. So if you're a long time veteran or just had your interest piqued, stop on by for in the grim darkness of the forums there is only war.

Here are some example pictures of using Google Docs for playing both 40k and fantasy:

Hmm this is an interesting concept. The table top game is way to expensive for me, I can barley afford the codexs let alone a fully thing of units and vehicles. Maybe we can work something out on the site and have small table top battles on forum boards.

But other then that I been fascinated with the Lore of the 40K universe but could never get in to it. Not vary popular in my area see. So doing it would be grate, I could run my Dark Elder and Necron army with out having to have all the peices.

Now just need to know were to get my hands on a good digital book of the rules and codexs.

Alright, let's do this thing!

A strange artifact was found on the Imperial world of Barandar. It's function is unknown, save that it radiates immense psychic power. When the techpriests studying the device were preparing to move it off world, a sudden warning was received: enemies incoming. A resident Inquisitor put out the call for all nearby Imperium forces to converge on the world to protect the artifact. Multiple regiments of the Imperial Guard soon arrived, along with nearly an entire chapter's worth of Space Marines of all sorts. However, it may not be enough.

In the dark of the warp, all the enemies of Man approach. Manipulated by the twisted machinations of Chaos, each comes to claim the artifact, thinking they are the only ones.

This will be a Warhammer 40k Apocalypse scale game. I hope to get at least 2v2, but 3v3 would be even better. Each player will be assigned to one of two teams, either the Imperium (Loyalist Space Marines of all sorts, Imperial Guard, Grey Knights, etc.) or the Enemies of Man (Pretty much everyone else). Each player will have 5,000 points worth of troops, ignoring the force organization chart. Eldar or Tau forces can ally with the Imperium given very good reason if we have an imbalance.

Special Rules:

Each Special Character can only appear once, not once per player

A single infantry model may carry the Artifact. When that model dies, the Artifact is dropped to the ground as a 1 inch diameter token. Any infantry model in base contact with the Artifact can pick it up on its owner's turn. The Artifact may be handed to any allied model within 1" once per turn. No unit may deepstrike or infiltrate within 24" of the Artifact, treat it as impassible terrain for the purposes of deepstriking. All psychic tests taken within 6" of the artifact succeed regardless of the roll, but cause Perils of the Warp on any double rather than just a 1s and 6s

Imperium Special Rules:

Special powers that target your own units may target allies (a Company Commander can issue orders to allies, for example, provided both players agree)

Units may embark on allied transports (provided both players agree), but may only embark or disembark on their owner's turn.

If an Imperium model holds the Artifact at the end of turn 6, all Imperium players win

Enemies of Man Special Rules:

Units can fire at enemies engaged in close combat, provided none of that player's units are involved in the fight. Hits will be divided evenly amongst all units involved.

Templates may be placed so that "allied" units are under the template as though they were enemies

If an Enemy of Man model holds the Artifact at the end of turn 6, whichever player owns that model wins

If an Enemy of Man model holds the Artifact, that model's owner is considered to be the enemy of every other player

These rules are still in development. If any of you have suggestions, ideas or insight please let me know, especially if you've ever played an Apocalypse scale game before. Please post here if you are interested in participating, and which side/army you want to play.

Fyi, what those pictures don't show is the horrendous thrashing I receive each game. Suppose that's what i get for using a few home brewed armies >_>.But the numerous losses along with me still playing it should show how much fun it is, that and I won like..One game almost three. Oh yea..I'm Holy x_x.

Now that I am back from vacation, I'm going to be putting together the playing field. To do that, I'm going to need to know how many people will be playing. Please post here if you are playing and which side/army you want so I know how big to make the battlefield

The Imperial Guard seems rather popular. I'm going to assume that you are listed in order of preference, making the current roster

Enemies of Man:

Freeman-Necrons

Dark Wizard-Tyranids

Imperium:

Gaunt-Space Marines

if it turns out that we have an uneven number of players, we can assign the spare one to Enemies of Man and I'll arrange the map to favor the Imperium

Well if its unbalanced in the end, I can go Imperial Guard.

Probably be a lot easier for me to learn too.

Well, since Holy and I are the only ones who have played warhammer in this format before, it's probably best if we're on opposite sides, making the current roster:

Enemies of Man:

Freeman-Necrons

Dark Wizard-Tyranids

Silentartist-Flame Falcons(fluffed chaos marines)

Imperium:

Gaunt-Space Marines

Lord of Chaos-Imperial Guard/Inquisition

I'd rather have any imbalance be in favor of the Enemies of Man (the scenario rules favor the Imperium a bit, and it's easier to give them environmental advantages to even things out). If someone else joins as Enemies, you can be Guard

I'll get the map done on Friday, so anybody else interested has until then to join. I've attached the blank templates for common unit sizes (20x20 for basic infantry, 25 for space marines, etc.). If you want a specially "painted" force, either post here with the units and colors you want and I'll get to it as soon as I can or edit the attached files to fit your army. I've attached a painted Leman Russ for an example.<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2011_12/Warhammer_zip.7db01dad7a82df64451caeb4607c4f83" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="23335" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2011_12/Warhammer_zip.7db01dad7a82df64451caeb4607c4f83" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p><p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2011_12/57a8bfb2d8dbb_LemanRuss.png.f6d1fd8a267f1f39c01358499f8d48d0.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="23336" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2011_12/57a8bfb2d8dbb_LemanRuss.png.f6d1fd8a267f1f39c01358499f8d48d0.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

I have played both a variant of this and tabletop itself I would love to play I just need to know how the rules are being adapted or are we using the full rule book as well as codecs. I can play either side just tell me where I can play and I'll pick a race. Also can we use heavy metal units as well?

not sure what you mean by heavy metal units, but most stuff is allowed as long as it isn't cheesy or broken.

For the most part, rules work as-written, except for LoS which obviously is a bit different since we can't go down to eye level. We also tend to be rather forgiving about exact model location within a unit, since it's harder to rearrange units online that on a tabletop. For LoS, just draw a line and see if it's blocked by anything bigger than either the firing unit or the target unit. If there's something of equal size in the way, you can fire but the target gets a cover save.

But of course. As always, try to keep the list fun to both play and play against rather than win at all costs. Keep that in mind and you can use pretty much any unit, from either the codex, apocalypse, imperial armor or even other lists (provided there is a fluff reason for them to be there). For example, I've got a small Grey Knights unit in my army representing the Inquisition forces interested in the artifact despite playing the Imperial Guard.
