Artifact Nature

The Sefer Raziel HaMalakh, (Hebrew ספר רזיאל המלאך "Book of Raziel the Angel”), also known as the Liber Razielis Archangeli, is a prehistoric grimoire reputed in Kabbalistic legends to have been penned by the archangel Raziel himself, keeper of secrets and angel of mysteries.

Incomplete and highly mistranslated editions of the book exist in the public record dating as far back as the 13th century, primarily written in Hebrew and Aramaic, but surviving also in medieval Latin translation in a 13th-century manuscript produced under Alfonso X.

The Book of Raziel kept under lock and key in the vault, however, is purportedly the oldest, the most complete and the least corrupted incarnation of the legendary book. The Vault of Raziel was originally built to store this sacred text.

Description

The Book originally took the form of a scroll in the Talmudic style, the parchment comprised of Gevil (calfskin) hide inscribed in atramentum-based ink. The housing consisted of two handled rollers in wrought silver, capped with round disks. Each disc was surmounted by decorative caps, also in silver, depicting the heads of each of the four Hayyoth HaKadosh, the Living Beasts supporting the Chariot or Throne of God, as described in the Merkabah visions of the biblical prophet Ezekiel. The scroll and housing were sealed in an airtight casement of plain laquered sandalwood.

Carbon dating of the calfskin parchment estimates that the text dates back to around ca. 2500 BC, long before the oldest known archaeological fragments of papyrus appeared. Dating of the human hair used in the scroll ribbon was consistent with the parchment's age.

The scroll has since been chopped up into separate pages in order to preserve the integrity of the Book, with each page carefully decontaminated and stored in 962 bulletproof glass panels, which have subsequently been filed away in the Vault under Level 6 restricted access.

Content

The language used in the Vault's copy of the Book is a form of proto-Semitic, and the scroll also contains many occult pictographs, sigils and schematics. The content features an elaborate angelology, magical uses of the zodiac, gematria, the 72 names of God, protective spells, and methods for the devising of amulets, talismans and catalysts. The text elaborates on everything from astrology of the planets in Earth's solar system to the spiritual laws of birth, death and reincarnation of the soul.

It expounds upon many subjects similar to the concepts discussed in Kabbalistic mysticism. Nonetheless, it is clear that this text predates Kabbalistic texts, including the Zohar (thirteenth century CE), the Bahir (thirteenth century CE as well), and possibly the proto-Kabbalistic Sefer Yetzirah (fourth century CE).

The Book of Raziel's exposition also includes an exegesis of the biblical Book of Genesis, with notable deviations. It includes an account wherein, following the Fall of Man, Adam apologizes to God for listening to his wife Eve, who was deceived by the snake into eating from the "Tree of Knowledge".

God sends the wisest of the Angels, Raziel, to teach Adam the spiritual laws of nature and life on earth, including the knowledge of the planets, stars and the spiritual laws of creation. The Angel Raziel also teaches Adam the knowledge of the power of speech, the power of thoughts and the power of a person's soul within the confines of the physical body and this physical world.

Prometheus, thief of light, giver of light, bound by the gods, must have been a book.
