Fantasy Von Falla & Chrestomanci Idea Storage

Gardeners are the caretakers of an ancient relic whose origins are lost to time. This relic resembles a gargantuan tree floating in the sky, and can only be accessed by those members of the mundane race whose DNA can act as a key to unlock the relic's secrets. The amount of power granted by the relic depends on the compatibility of the gardener and is called "knowledge." Gardeners with low compatibility can accomplish feats such as creating and controlling a small flame whereas gardeners with excellent compatibility can summon maelstroms and are even rumored to be able to manipulate time.

Due to the fact that the chance of one having the proper DNA is unpredictable, there are no lineages of gardeners. When a gardener reaches puberty, the relic will call to them in various ways, such as through voices, visions, or coincidental incidents that draw the gardener closer to it. The stronger the compatibility, the stronger the call. For some gardeners, their compatibility is so weak that they never notice the call and live and die as regular mundanes without knowing any better.

Since it is their duty to tend to the relic, gardeners will often go see it throughout their lifetimes with the frequency of their visits increasing as they age. For the most part, after recognizing their connection to the relic nothing will change about a gardener. However, individuals with particularly a powerful compatibility will have their emotions, ambitions, and autonomy gradually fade away until they visit the relic one last time, only to never return. No one knows what happens to these gardeners. Efforts have been made to halt this process but nothing has been successful.

Gardeners have no discernible features separating them from regular mundanes; they have the same lifespan and suffer from the same mortality. The only difference is found within their DNA.
