Veronica Spivot
Personality:
| Empath | Protector | Author | Counselor | Visionary |
Veronica is witty, feisty, inquisitive, and always has the perfect retort for any insult. She has a nasty habit of not being able to stay out of people’s business. It’s one of her many quirks, along with her inability to not intervene when she sees something bad happening. Veronica is creative, snarky, highly intuitive, and wise-beyond-her-years, although her strong morals and intrepidity usually override any sense of self-preservation she may have. She is the type of person to hold grudges.
History:
Veronica’s mother started off as a photojournalist for various newspapers, then became a professor at a university. Her children– Veronica and Patty– had a somewhat rough childhood, but the younger two were protected from the majority of it and remembered little, as they were so young. Veronica doesn’t remember what happened to her mother, but she went missing when they were children and she suspects her father’s involvement. He was their only parent, but Veronica had done most of the parenting since she was eight or so. She is still uncertain of what happened with her parents when she was young– though it is certainly not what she imagined it to be. From a young age, her mother had alienated her from her father and made him out to be evil. While he was not necessarily a good guy, she was certainly not a good mother and her mental instability would influence Veronica’s development, even after she was out of the picture and locked up in an asylum.
She studied media and journalism at Central City University and graduating at age 21. She also took after her mother with her love for communication. Her articles were always well-researched, revealing, and sourced from a key emotion of the subject. She was on-site during the time of the particle accelerator explosion, which turned her into a metahuman based on these traits of her character. One of her photos became well-known and won a Pulitzer, which helped land her a job at CCPN. She became the newspaper’s go-to journalist for all things related to S.T.A.R. Labs and the explosion. Her boss wanted her to go negative, but she remained ethical in her approach. Metahumans only really began to emerge to the public about nine months from the explosion. By that time, Veronica had realized she, too, may have changed into someone new.
Abilities:
Empathic Mimicry gives Veronica the ability to duplicate the abilities of other metahumans within proximity and reproduce them at will. While there is no limit to how many powers she can acquire, not all powers are made equal. Everyone gains their abilities for a reason, and some people aren’t meant to have certain powers. Incompatible powers will play a role in her demise. Being empathetic, Veronica needs to experience another person's "essence" in order to use their abilities, resulting in a seemingly turbulent personality that she must learn to control.
Initially, she may only use one ability at once and has to be near the original user to use it.
As she gains control over her ability, she can use powers she has used before but must recall how the person made her feel.
She can sometimes acquire abilities she isn’t expecting and has to figure out how to control them without knowing the source or how to control them.
Relationships:
Iris West was the first person in years that was able to break through Veronica’s cold exterior. They shared a common flaw of naivety, which often got them into trouble. When the two of them aren’t getting into trouble, they are found chatting at Jitters or watching movies in their pajamas.
Veronica spent an increasing amount of time at the West house and got to know Barry Allen. The two “clicked” and Iris encouraged a relationship between them, but neither party admitted to wanting anything more than friendship.
It was only a matter of time before Veronica met Cisco Ramon. At first, he seemed to be comic relief with little depth of character. She discovered his ability but kept it a secret from his friends upon request. Veronica came to know him as compassionate, intelligent, sassy, strong, and vulnerable. She formed a strong bond with him, believing that he should embrace his abilities and use them to help people. They enjoy movie nights at the lab and geek out together. He also designed a special belt buckle that can dampen her powers so they didn't get out of control like with Firestorm. It later became part of her costume when she joined the others in the field.
Veronica's sister, Patty Spivot, became determined to join the metahuman task force once she learned that Mark Mardon was a metahuman. Mark Mardon, a bank-robbing criminal (and later weather meta), had murdered their father in cold blood some years ago, which influenced Patty’s career choice. Veronica and Patty’s mother went missing when they were younger, resulting in Veronica raising Patty. Veronica suspected her father’s role in her disappearance, and still hopes to discover what happened to her mother. They were quite close when they were young, but their relationship changed as their family dynamic changed.
At some point, Veronica was exposed to the Arrow team and associates. This happenstance resulted in a mutual attraction with Sara Lance, and though the coupling was teased at, their lives were on different paths that prevented a relationship from ever occurring, though they have been known to banter and flirt on occasion.
Caitlin Snow was always a workaholic and would sometimes hang out with Veronica and Cisco, but more often than not she’d bail. She only seemed to invest in romantic relationships and not herself or her friends (outside of Team Flash.) It wasn’t until she began to struggle with Killer Frost that Veronica and her grew closer– just like she had with Cisco being Vibe. There was quite a lot of drama– she went full villain for a bit– but being an empath, Veronica was able to get through to her like no one else could. She helped Caitlin come to terms with her other half and how to adapt to stop living in fear.
Ralph Dibney was a character Veronica begrudgingly gave another chance when they ended up on the same team. She'd come to him before– trying to track down her mother– but the two didn't get on and she'd stormed off. When he came back into the picture and joined the team, he worked on redeeming himself by helping her work out her mother's case and helping her get some much-needed closure.
Nora West-Allen and Veronica hit it off before she knew Nora's identity, and pulled back a bit when she found out because of Iris and Barry. Things got a little awkward when Nora hinted that she wasn't around in the future, which naturally had Veronica theorizing and worrying about how she'd referred to Exposure in the past tense. In spite of this, Veronica continued on as Exposure, knowing that every time she put the mask on she was risking her life and that this changed nothing. Things got more awkward after this because it only seemed to make Nora like her more and Veronica had never stopped. She was devastated when Nora died, somewhat guilty because of her influence, but also incredibly proud.
Killer Frost is only just coming out of her shell, but has so much potential– I'd love to explore her more!
