Food Vegan questions

I'm veggie, so not quite vegan, and I don't eat fish or roe. Pretty sure you won't find many vegans who do either! I don't avoid honey, but don't eat it often.. that one has always confused me as to what is best for the bee's, I've heard arguments from both sides

I don't know what roe is. lol

I think it's justified to eat honey as a vegan. It's not like eggs where you can be called an ogre because of eating babies.

If you eat fish, you're not vegan. Fish is technically a form of meat because it's the flesh of a dead animal.

I just wanna say something real quick... I admire vegans for their dedication and willpower. I used to diet down with raw broccoli as my second meal of the day. I eventually gave up because I couldn't tolerate it. It was nasty.

Yet I've heard of a professional weightlifter who is a vegan.

That takes a lot of willpower and I think it's admirable.

I agree, and also. Roe is basically fish eggs.

I always wondered about the eggs and milk products. I mean, the eggs aren't fertilized and the rest doesn't kill animals. I should think if you get them from a responsible place (not doing horrid f-d up things to their animals) they would be okay. That would be a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian which I was, for a year.

1. Do you eat roe?
2. Do you eat honey?
3. Do you eat fish?

All three are an indisputable "no" for me. Veganism is an ideology centered around animal rights, and any form of animal exploitation violates these basic principles. It is not meant to be treated like a fad diet. It's a moral code and lifestyle... In other words, anybody consuming, wearing or using any animal derivatives (regardless of their origin) are not vegan.

One cannot consume honey and call themselves vegan, even if it's locally sourced. The harvesting is extremely hard on the hive (die-off rates are massive), and even small bee farmers receive their bees via mail orders. Lots of unnecessary suffering is involved in the exploitation of bees, and you can learn more about that online. Here's an informative, yet short read. Great honey alternatives include maple syrup, agave nectar and dates. Also, all of Dave's Killer Breads are delicious and vegan. For medicinal concerns: coconut oil, turmeric, ginger and chamomile tea are the way to go. You can also pluck, shave, thread or sugar wax your eyebrows/unwanted body hair instead of using bee's wax. Honey is easy to live without.

I've been living this way for 4 years now and don't find it challenging. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about it.

Alright, thanks for your response. My mom sells stuff at the farmers market and I know she does some kind of vegan cake with agave instead of honey.

This hasn't turned into a flame war yet?

Proud of your rpn!

As for related questions, I agree with White Stag White Stag I'd think anything involving animal exploitation would be inheritly non vegan. But I'm not vegan, just my thoughts.

As an outside observer, like Spacekitty Spacekitty , it looks like there's two types of vegans.
The animal lover vegans and the dietary vegans.
The former, like White Stag White Stag , do it in order to preserve animal life and not put any pressure on the wildlife. On the other hand, dietary vegans do it because they want to be "healthier." They have no such restrictions about honey, fish, or roe. Some of them just don't eat red meat or poultry.

That is my thoughts exactly actually. I acknowledge the health benefits, Im actually heading in a more plant based diet. But I'm not quite as animal loving as you folk seem to be. ;p

I've seen vegans that are super skinny and always look tired, I don't think they're doing the vegan thing right.

I mean they look unhealthy.
Im not a dietician nor an expert on vegan foods but id go off on a limb and agree that they arent doing it right. A little fat on ya is healthy no?

Or maybe their completely healthy, and have surpassed the traditional boundaries of human health and have transformed into a skeleton as the toxins left their bodies
