Fantasy Valhalla Shadows: Prison of Heroes

How strong should the characters be?

  • Realistic: The heroes are just people. Some people are strong but no one is an army by themselves

SAIGO-NO-HEATS

A drifter, returned
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in joining an idea I'd been considering for a while but never got around to putting into motion.

On the wide view it cribs a few ideas from works like Drifters or the Fate/series, but the basic plot is this:

We play the long dead heroes of legends, everything from your Achilles' and your King Arthurs to your Napoleons and Nobunagas. The real life and mythical champions of the past who have died and gone to a somewhat macabe version of Valhalla where they are forced for eternity to relive their struggles, victories, and failures until the end of time. Unable to change things or even learn from them. Hector will always kill Patroclus, Achilles will always kill Hector, and so on.

However our story begins when this chain is broken. Something occurs where a handful of these champions begin to recognize their situation, remembering bits of the battle they've fought countless times and changing them ever so slightly as a result, typically in order to save themselves or someone they care about from a tragic fate.

From then on we follow our heroes as they travel between these different times trying to change the fates that they and their friends are still hurtling towards as well as try to figure out the truth behind their supernatural prison, all while dark forces begin to move behind the scenes as something starts to notice the actors moving out of place.

The RP will be somewhere between casual and detailed and as this RP leans heavily on classical and historical legends and battles I will expect that players have at least a decent knowledge of the characters they choose to play as they'll be expected to help craft the ironic hell that they and their allies are trapped in. That being said you aren't required to follow history to the letter and minor changes are allowed if you want to personalize a character. I.e. '(character) was secretly a girl/ was younger than was assumed/ didn't actually die how they were said to have/ was actually betrayed by this person/ etc. if you feel it makes for a more interesting story so long as it doesn't radically change established history. All that can be explained in the character bios when the sheets go up but I would love to hear people's ideas here if you've got some in the meantime

Totally in! I love anything to do with myth, legend and/or history. I have a bunch of ideas for characters.

Rama (from the Ramayana)
Robin hood
Joan of Arc
Sigurd (from the Norse saga)
Beowulf
Ching Shih (the pirate)

You get the idea. XD

Good to hear it. Those all sound pretty rad. Never heard of Ching Shih before but she looks cool.

Does the prison have guards? They could make some pretty good fodder

Well its not like an actual prison but rather like a series of points in time stuck on repeat and loosely chained together. The main enemies will be the heroes still bound by fate and the nameless soldiers that serve them. That being said there's clearly something keeping everyone bound in their points and they'll probably be more of a threat as it becomes clear that the actors won't go back to their stories without a fight.

May not be in shape to run a mythological heroes roleplay, doesn't mean I didn't want to play in one.

More the merrier. Happy to have you on board.

Wait so is the hero selection more focused on the mythical side of heroism or rather could you pick a character on the more realistic side of heroes?

Oooooh! I want to be the Duke of Wellington! Or maybe Marshall Ney!

I'm interested to see how those two would work in a Fate/ like setting.

Would I be able to do Lancelot?

Pretty much anyone from the Arthurian Mythos would work fine.

It definitely hews more towards the Mythical end but anyone is fair game if you can think of a way to get them to work along side the more fantastic figures.

Was thinking for the duke, he's more of a commander type, he could summon up a ghost regiment to do battle for him. Gives a lot of variety.

Pretty much what I would think. Although maybe since he is a commander his actual sodiers or at least a personal regiment are considered an extension of his own will and legend so when he breaks free of fate they become bound to him, so eventhough they're like real dudes he can control them perfectly or something. I dunno.

Also a brief wikipedia search says that the Duke was primarily a defensive commander who was famous for his adaptive defensive style, so maybe he has powers relating to that? There's a lot you could do.

Although if this ends up mythic that doesn't really seem possible.

The poll was just to get a gauge for what everyone was feeling. Most of the people who voted aren't actually going to join so we're not exactly bound to it by law.

As it stands the "anime" route seems the most interesting to me so as I've been writing stuff up that's the one I've been working under the assumption is the way we're gonna go.

Also it's the one I voted for.

Thank god. Me too. I'm thinking a Gate of Babylon type power for my character. I'm leaning towards going with Karna (Ramayana)

Could be interesting, albeit a bit OP depending.

Are you thinking more towards the "I have a copy of every weapon that has ever existed" end or more to the "Fire tons of bullshit at the enemy until they die" end?

I'm thinking of the "tons of bullshit" route. Karna was a pretty op archer in his story (could invoke gods in his arrows) but he had shit for luck. I'll try to dial him back a bit though.

Really you only have to dial him back as much as the other characters are. If everyone has abilities of that level then it's fine. I have a character I'm working on now that could block tons of arrows easily enough.
