Welcome to space. The Milky Way is your oyster in space travel, just watch for black holes. If you're hankering for a gallavant through the void with a ragtag bunch of misfits, here are some things about the setting that should be known by everyone desiring to participate.

Playable Species

Humans

Humans are the newest species to join the galactic stage. They are bipedal creatures of a carbon base, with highly developed brains. While Humans were lucky to reach 100 years of age centuries ago, recent medical advances have allowed Humans to slow down the aging process, reaching senior citizen status at around 80 years of age, an improvement over the previous number of 65. Humans can live for a full two centuries before succumbing to old age. Even though humanity itself is only roughly 100,000 years old, their advances in technology are astonishingly swift. Along with their passion for science, however, came a craving for violence, as well. Human weapons are among the most sophisticated in the galaxy, but that should not speak ill of their killing capacity.

While a stereotype exists that Humans are a "middle ground" between species in terms of ability, Humans do shine in one specific area that severely outclasses all others: Endurance. Human capacity for pain is staggeringly high compared to other species, and the mere fact that they can remain alive and conscious even while cut in half is a source of fear for human hating aliens. Add that alongside Humans being the best endurance runners in the galaxy, and you have the image of a seemingly unstoppable alien.

Humans inspire fear without even realizing it. Their tendencies to completely overachieve go far in all activity, from science to sport and even war. Humans involved in galactic politics are doing their best to not seem like bloodthirsty war machines, though success is limited, due to the massive presence of Human lead space pirates spreading across the galaxy...

Robots

Robots, and AI in general, are human inventions. Humans use AI for nearly everything, from piloting their ships, to operating prosthetic limbs, and even entrusting them to fight. When an AI is placed into a machine capable of operating on its own, it is called a robot.

Robots come in many shapes and sizes, to be more suited to a certain purpose. For example, a robot meant to wage war would be large, rigid, and covered in armor, while a robot designed to serve customers of any kind may be slender, curved, possibly even resembling a human or other alien. While Robots may share a similar body structure with other Robots of a similar make, their AI almost always develops differently, allowing for different personalities for each Robot. A Robot is practically immortal, as they never truly die unless their AI is destroyed. As such, Robots do not die of aging, as others do. While Robots are granted citizenship across the galaxy, they are curiously barred from political matters, possibly due to hacking paranoia.

Guttle
Gray-Alien-Digital-Sculpture_photo_medium.jpg
The Guttle, often referred as "Greys" by Humans, are the first species of alien to ever reach out to the fleshy apes. Guttle can stand anywhere from 4 to 7 feet tall at adulthood, though their slender bodies and lack of muscle mass pretty much assures a Guttle will never weigh more than 200 pounds. Their brains are even more advanced than Human and Eru brains, composing 10% of a Guttle's total weight. Guttle lifespan is generally around 80-100 years.

Guttle are the only aliens that do not manufacture weapons of any kind. Their reason being, they do not need them. All Guttle are naturally psychic, and can utilize a powerful telekinetic field at will. Overuse or overexertion of this ability may cause health issues in the Guttle.

Guttle culture is based largely around advancing their technology. Science holds authority above all in Guttle politics and social structure. The most advanced medicine and spacecraft are all Guttle inventions; designed for ease of use for all species.

Eru

The Eru, more commonly known as "Space Elves", are the oldest intelligent race in the Milky Way galaxy. They are strikingly similar to humans in appearance, except for their pointed ears, and "unusual" stray of hair colors, from red to sky blue. Eru share Humanity's carbon based structure and bipedal frame, and usually stand anywhere between 5-6 feet tall. Eru tend to live for 1000 years or more, and are not considered adults until they reach 100 years old.

Eru culture is insanely xenophobic. They shun outsiders and actively reject change, save for what is absolutely necessary. Many Eru have been influenced through propaganda to actively loathe humans for their ceaseless changes.

It was not until the war 100 years ago that Eru began developing modern military weapons to combat the Guttle, the Drog, and the Xiaad. Eru weapons are unique in that rather than shooting solid physical projectiles, they instead fire pure plasma.

Eru anatomy is incredibly dense, as an evolution wrought eons ago forced them to become immune to all forms of radiation as their home planet drifted closer to the sun. Now, radiation is considered nutritious for Eru.
Drog
latest
The Drog are an oddly proportioned species of alien, unique in that they communicate via hive mentality. Drog have a leathery exterior, with a mouth on either side of their elongated necks. Drog can stand anywhere from 5 to 8 feet tall, and possess bottom-heavy legs, which assist them on their high gravity homeworld. Drog are strictly herbivore, and suffer severe allergic reactions to meat.

Drog mouths are strictly for eating, and do not possess vocal cords. Instead, Drog communicate through an open neural network called the Hive Mind. The more Drog are connected to a Hive, the more coordinated they become. While normally, Drog can only enter a Hive with other Drog, there have been reports of Drog establishing connections with Guttle. For communication with other species, Drog often carry around a text-to-speech device; a courtesy brought by Humans shortly after they began to mend their chaos through ending the old war.

Xiaad
latest
Xiaad are a barbaric, amphibious species who originate from near the center of the galaxy. Xiaad stand anywhere from 6 to 14 feet tall, and come in five colors: Red, green, blue, black, and grey. The colors are often a determining factor for height and nothing more, with blue Xiaad being the tallest. Xiaad are naturally strong, and many go to great competitive lengths to prove themselves the strongest Xiaad. Xiaad tend to live anywhere between 20-700 years. There seems to be no clear indication of their lifespan.

Xiaad are asexual, and do not possess means for reproduction in a normal way. Instead, Xiaad reproduce by attacking other living things with their unique wrist claws, which inject an infectious venom into the victim. If left untreated for a month, the victim becomes a Xiaad themselves. The color seems to be random, although studies show that Eru tend to become Green Xiaad more frequently.

After Human intervention in the great galactic war, they cracked down heavily on Xiaadi cultural practices. Where they would once pillage, attack and infect as they pleased, Xiaad must now humiliatingly ask for consent to turn someone else into a Xiaad. This, along with curbing their instinctive anger, have caused a great number of Xiaad to be thrown into jail stations across the galaxy, or even ejected out of the Milky Way.

Despite this, Xiaad still tend to find work suited for them, such as contact sports, bodyguarding, and other physical labor.
Technology - Vehicles
To get around the vacuum of space, a ship of some kind is required. No sentient being can survive in space for long, with the exception of Robots. As such, the species of the galaxy have developed unique means for space travel, improving upon them during and after the Galactic War. Ships are classified by size.

The smallest ships, meant to accommodate one or two people, are Fighters.

Larger than that are Freighters, designed for short distance cargo.

A step above that is Frigates, designed for massive cargo and long distances.

And the largest ships of them all are classified as Destroyers, notorious for their military use and planet glassing cannons.

Human ships are usually straightforward and overly simplistic in nature. Anything larger than a typical Fighter craft usually possesses an FTL drive and enough fuel to safely travel long distances. Humans were the first to introduce the concept of a "Carrier" ship. They were massive in size, and coated in armor, but rather than a massive gun, Carriers often deployed swarms of Fighter craft upon enemies. This allowed Humanity to bypass the tax on possessing more than 5 Destroyers in an official fleet.

Guttle ships are highly advanced and of unusual shape. They are considered the best in the Galaxy, especially after peace settled, and the Guttle began creating alien friendly interfaces. While Guttle themselves have no use for small arms, they're not afraid to arm their ships. Many Guttle fleets make heavy use of EMP cannons to disable attackers.

Eru ships favor sleek, complex designs to prevent reverse-engineering. Eru ship guns usually fire plasma or radiation.

Drog spacecraft is a combination of organic material and metal, more often serving as hive mind hubs rather than transport. As such, most do not possess a means of defending themselves. Smaller Drog craft often patrol around the large hives, sworn to fend off pirates and looters.

Xiaad ships are primitive and unfavorably uneven; and usually far larger than even the largest registered ship in an alien fleet. It is rare that a Xiaad ship possesses an FTL drive. Xiaad cannons tend to fire ballistic projectiles, having picked up on Humanity's use of tungsten rods.
