In the game they are from, Bonfires act as a safeguard from enemies when you rest at them. They, as Loin said, are also used to teleport you from one place to the next. Since you removed it, it's usless in that department, but for anything special, the sword itself (Or the Firelink Greatsword in peticular) just shoots waves of fire in a strait path on the ground.
