Basically, this is set in a fictional, schizo-tech world where apocalyptic circumstances have reduced most of the planet into a wasteland. Humanity now exists as various subraces, including mutants and "posthumans". The vast majority of "old humanity" lives in a country called Sanctaria, ruled by the Autumn Party, who are evil fascists.
I generally play as a DM, so your character needs to make decisions that determine whether they succeed or fail, or live or die. The standard type of person to play would be a civilian, but you're free to pitch other ideas to me if you're interested in joining.
Living in Sanctaria, you don't have access to a great deal of history or explanation. Events are fluid and often rearranged, and they're always filtered through a well-oiled machine of distortion and lies before being made available to the public. But this is what you might know.
Most of the world is a lawless wasteland known as the Gloom. There used to be an old world, maybe a century ago. An event known as 'Ashfall' upset the natural order of things. It was a great supervolcanic eruption that coated the land in soot and filled the skies with smoke. According to the AuP, it was a necessary event to purge the weak, and herald the coming of an overhuman race.
The events after Ashfall were murky. Governments fell, reformed, fell again... it was a chaotic period of confused violence, disorder and famine which culminated in the Chemical Wars which only served to further contaminate the land. Grotesque mutations and birth defects now plagued well over half of the human race. Over the years, some of the unmutated began evolving into 'posthumans'. Those who hid underground for decades became the albinistic 'Subterrans', while the posthumans known as 'Greenbloods' gained an odd skin hue after consuming algae-derived rations for many years.

A monolithic movement known as the 'Autumn Party' arose to take the reigns of what remained of Old Humanity (aka "the Orthodox"), who were now in the minority. For years, they have formed Sanctaria's government. The AuP seeks to unite humans under a single collective will, and eradicate 'Subhumanity' through their endless wars known as the 'Great Victories'. The AuP's secret police, known as the 'Watchmen', are a looming shadow over everyday life in Sanctaria. Through surveillance, police espionage, and a network of informants and spies, people are known to disappear.
Life in harsh in a Sanctarian urbzone. Rationing is strict, poverty is rife, and anything other than unthinking obedience is punishable by death.
