Multiple Settings Two Worlds

Shmuel

Grateful Servant of God
The alarm clock buzzed over and over. It was such an annoying sound. Of course, that's why Zev picked it. If it was soothing and mellow, he wouldn't want to get up... and throw the clock against the wall, like he did now.

"Mmmm." He groggily moaned and forced himself to get out of bed. He threw his legs over the side of the bed and stood up while his eyes were still closed. He steadied himself on the wall after wobbling slightly and finally opened his eyes. The daylight came flooding in like he was under a spotlight and Zev squinted reflexively.
"I just love the first day of school."

The smell of pancakes made its way to the back of the apartment, all the way to the hallway outside of the restroom. It was the first thing Zev noticed after getting out of the shower.
"Way to go, Bibi!"

A plate of food was already on the table when Zev got into the kitchen. He sniffed the air and said, "Bibi, your pancakes are just what I need on a day like this. Thanks." Bibi's pancakes were legendary and Zev wasn't the only one to think so. Other students would ask him to make some for them.

Just as he was about take the first bite, there was a knock at the door.

1. Ask, "Who is it?"
2. Open the door.
3. Ignore it and eat those pancakes!

Zev asked, "Who is it?" and he heard the reply, "Ruth, from next door." Zev opened the door to find his neighbor standing there. She had short blonde hair, with a flower behind her ear. She always found a way to be cute and she wasn't shy about it. Zev might actually ask her out if not for the girl at the pizza parlor.

Zev had talked to Bibi about Ruth and he suggested that he date both of them. No way! He wanted a lasting relationship, not to be a player. If Bibi wanted to play games, let him. Zev knew it wasn't worth it.

"Since it's the first day of school, I thought you might not have time for breakfast. So, I made you some!" She held up a ceramic pot and grinned. "You can bring the dish back later on. See you at school!" She handed Zev the pot and waved as she headed back to her house.

Zev walked back into the house and closed the door. He looked at the pancakes that Bibi just made, then to the pot he was holding, then at his watch. He opened the pot and saw a spicy tomato soup with boiled eggs, a common Israeli breakfast. School would start soon and he didn't want to be late. On the other hand, he was still hungry and wasn't able to eat anything, yet.

1. Continue eating the pancakes and put the pot in the fridge.
2. Eat what's in the pot and save the pancakes for later.
3. Skip breakfast, so he's not late for school.

3. Skip breakfast, so he's not late for school.

Who says breakfast is the most important meal of the day ?  Brunch is ! :P   And there's always lunch O.o .

Besides best not to be late and stick out in an awkward way.

Zev put the pot in the fridge and took one last look at the pancakes. He couldn't help but frown, knowing he was going to miss them.

"You know how much I like your pancakes, Bibi, but I don't want to be late for school."

"That's fine. More for me!" Bibi started eating the pancakes in an exaggerated way, just to tease Zev.

"Mmm, these are so good. You go ahead. I'll catch up with you... after I devour them all!" He chuckled while his mouth was full of pancake.

"Ahhh!" With a frustrated grunt, Zev exited the apartment and headed to the institute.

The apartment Zev and Bibi lived in wasn't far from the Technion, so they could walk there in about ten minutes. Zev muttered to himself the entire trip.

"He better save me some. See if I cook for him anytime soon." Maybe he was being a little immature, but he needed a boost for days like these. The first day of school was always hard. Being a sophomore only made it slightly easier.

Zev made it to class with a minute to spare, but he couldn't focus. His mind was ready, but his stomach was not. Then, just before the bell rang, Bibi quickly entered the room and made his way to his seat.

1. Glare at Bibi in silence.

2. Say, "Thanks for nothing!"

3. Sigh and forget about it. He needs to pay attention to his teacher.

Zev glared at Bibi, but didn't say anything. Bibi laughed and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Dude, relax. I saved you some. I was just teasing you."

His desk was next to Zevs'.

Zev's face softened to a slight frown.

"That wasn't very funny, 'dude'."

"Bro, just think about how much more you'll enjoy them after school!"

"I'd rather think not about them at all, right now. It's distracting."

A tap-tap sound coming from the chalkboard interrupted them.

"Good Morning, Class. I'm Mr. Matsumoto. I'll be your teacher for home room this year."

Mr. Matsumoto was a short, balding, Japanese man. He had a moustache and white hair. He reminded Zev of some karate movie he had seen as a child.

"I was told there was some issues with attendance last year, so we're going to be using a sign-in sheet."

Most of the students groaned at this.

"Ah, but you haven't heard the best part, yet. I believe in progression and adapting to modern needs. We won't be using a sign-in sheet that most of you are familiar with."

Mr. Matsumoto held up his phone.

"How many of you brought your phone to school? Hold it up, so I can see."

A few students rolled their eyes and pulled out their phones. One student even walked up to the teacher's desk and set it down.

"No, no. Hold on to it. You'll need it for this next part. Please, sit back down." The student looked at him in disbelief and walked back to his seat.

"We're going to be using a digital sign-in sheet. It can be found on the Apple Store or the Android Marketplace and it's free. Everyone who has their phones, do a search for iSign-In. It's two words, separated by a dash."

More students started pulling their phones out and started searching for the app.

"If there's any confusion as to which one I'm referring to, it's the one that was made by 'Matsumoto'."

A quiet chatter started in the room.

"Yes, I did make the app. As soon as you find it, go ahead and download the app. Everyone download it."

Mr. Matsumoto paced in front of his desk as he spoke.

"Whoever doesn't have their phone, please come up here and you can sign-in the old-fashioned way."

1. Zev pulls out his phone and searches for the app.

2. Zev walks up to the sign-in sheet. This might be a trap to report students to the dean for bringing their phones to class.

3. Do neither. Let the school think Zev is absent. Then, when he wants to skip a day, he can claim it was an error, like today.

Zev had his phone with him, but he decided to walk up to the sign-up sheet instead. He didn't quite trust this new teacher. It might have been a trap to gain the students' trust, and then rat them out to the principal for bringing their phones to class.

As each student signed in, Mr. Matsumoto would smile real big, nod, and say, "Thank you so much."

Zev tried not to let his distrust show on his face as approached the teacher. As the teacher nodded to him, Zev slightly nodded back. He returned to his seat, wondering if he was overreacting.

The students with phones followed the teacher's instructions and digitally signed-in without any problems.

"Excellent! Now that everyone is present and accounted for, it's time for your first assignment: a Pop Quiz!"

The groan from before was repeated, but was much louder that time. Zev thought he heard someone's head hitting their desk.

"This will help me to determine how well everyone knows the material here at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology."

Zev rubbed the back of his neck in frustration, but he wouldn't let the quiz ruin his day. If he remembered what he had learned the previous year, and used his problem-solving skills, he would do just fine. He inhaled and exhaled, steadying himself for the task at hand.

Mr. Matsumoto retrieved the papers from his desk, and walked down the rows, handing groups of tests to the students on the end, and asking them to pass them along. Zev glanced at his test and noticed it had 100 questions. He rolled his eyes and sighed heavily. That was going to take a while.

Zev looked in the direction of the teacher's desk, trying to mentally steel himself, when he thought he saw something....strange. Zev blinked his eyes and shook his head, taking a second look. Just as he thought, his mind was playing tricks on him. He didn't know if it was stress-related or not, but nothing like that had ever happened to Zev before. Did he really see Mr. Matsumoto wearing a mask? Why would the teacher have brought a mask with him to school and keep it in his desk? If he did, why would he put it on all of a sudden and then take it off just as suddenly? Had no one else seen it?

1. Have Zev ask Bibi if he saw the teacher wearing a mask.

2. Zev will leave it alone for now, but maybe ask the teacher after school.

3. Zev dismissed it from his mind as a hallucination and focused on the quiz.

He might be so starved that he's starting to see things ....might as well ask someone who isn't starved  O.o .......

Zev decided to ask Bibi if he saw the teacher wearing a mask.

After passing out the tests, the teacher walked back behind his desk and said,

"Answer as many questions as you can in 90 minutes. If you don't know the answer to a question, skip to the next one. Do not guess at the answer. If you do guess, based on your results, you may have to complete work in the future that you don't understand, almost ensuring that you get a failing grade."

Mr. Matsumoto sat in his chair and announced,

"You may now begin."

Zev leaned to his left and whispered,

"Bibi....Bibi." Bibi looked up from the quiz.

"Bibi, did you notice Mr. Matsumoto wearing a mask?"

"Mask? What are you talking about?! Zev, I'm trying to do this test."

"I just want to know if you saw him wearing a mask."

Bibi gave Zev a confused look.

"I think you're seeing things, bro. Don't worry; you'll feel better after lunch."

The next few hours went by without incident, but Zev kept thinking about what happened earlier. It bothered him that he could be so badly affected by missing breakfast (if that's what actually happened to him). He hoped that food would get him back to normal. The bell finally rang, signaling the lunch break.

Zev entered the cafeteria with a sigh of relief. He ordered his food and paid for it at the register. While his food was cooking, someone tapped him on the shoulder from behind.

"Guess who!"

It was Ruth's voice. Zev turned- and jumped at what he saw. It looked kind of like Ruth, but how she would look if she were dead.

"Huh? What's wrong, Zev?"

Ruth tilted her head to the side and had a quizzical expression on her face.

"Uh...nothing, Ruth. I guess I'm just kinda jumpy today, ha, ha!"

Zev hoped his forced laugh was convincing enough.

"Why don't you head over to Bibi and I'll meet you two over there?"

Ruth nodded slightly.

"OK".

Zev picked up his order and headed to the table where Bibi and Ruth were sitting. As he got closer to the table, he swallowed and told himself he could do it.

1. Zev acted like a man and sat down across from Ruth.
2. Zev chickened out and made up an excuse as to why he couldn't sit close to her.
3. Zev kept his head lowered so he wouldn't see her face.

(Sorry for not posting recently. Hurricane Matthew knocked out my power and I couldn't charge my phone except in the car occasionally. )

2 and 3 are similar....so its best to act like a man !

Zev manned up and took the seat across from Ruth. He would pretend that everything was fine. He looked and she was her normal cute self again.

"Hey, Zev. Are you feeling ok? Bibi told me that you thought you saw your teacher wearing a mask earlier. And just now, you were acting strange at the register."

Zev was a little worried and wanted to feel supported by his friends.

"I don't know. I think I might be a little stressed out today."

Ruth frowned real big and said,

"Ahhh, Zev. I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you should go visit the school nurse."

"Dude, don't stress. You're gonna be fine."

"Thanks, Bibi. And I think might, Ruth. Maybe she can help."

Zev finished his lunch and then started toward the nurse's office.

But maybe he didn't need to go there. It might pass with time, whatever it was. Or perhaps something was really wrong with him. Maybe he should see the school psychiatrist instead.

1. Zev will go back to class and hope everything will be OK.

2. Zev goes to the school nurse.

3. Zev goes to the school psychiatrist.

Zev was losing it and didn't know what to do. Maybe the school psychiatrist would know. He never thought much of the woman, but what did he have to lose now?

He headed toward the psychiatrist's office, occasionally shaking his head at the absurdity of it all. After he had completed his three years of mandatory military duty, he didn't feel as confused as he did now. Suicide bombers, fallen comrades, and militant children hadn't caused him to hallucinate.

As he rounded the corner just before getting to the office, Zev noticed a man he'd never seen before. A new professor, perhaps, he reasoned. He paid him little attention and continued on.

"She can't help you, Zev."

Zev stopped in surprise and turned around. Did he know him from somewhere?

"She doesn't have the answer you're looking for."

"Who are you? How do you know my name?!"

"I've been watching over you for a long time. I know you're confused, but the truth can be found, if you seek it."

"Truth? Truth about what? That I'm losing my mind?! I don't even know you and you're stalking me! Why don't you explain that to me, huh?"

"Zev?"

"What?!"

"Who are you talking to?"

Zev turned around to see the psychiatrist standing in front of him.

"I'm talking to that creep professor right over-"

He was gone. He must've ducked around the corner. What a coward, Zev thought.

"You just missed him. He was telling me how he's been watching me for a long time."

"I was listening to you talk, but I couldn't see who you were talking to. Are you alright, Zev?"

Zev frowned and shook his head.

"No. No, I'm not."

"Zev, why don't we go to my office and we can talk about what's troubling you, OK?"
He was doing it. He was actually going to speak to Ms. Almasi. He never would have imagined he'd go there in a million years.
"Actually, Ms. Almasi, I was on my way there just now."

Ms. Almasi had light brown skin, black hair that went to the middle of her back, and it was clear that she took good care of herself. Bibi talked to Zev about her from time to time. Zev couldn't deny she was attractive, but she was also part of the school faculty, a detail that Bibi didn't seem to care about.

"Alright, Zev. Tell me what's the matter with you."
Ms. Almasi put on a pair of glasses and picked up a notepad and pen from her desk.
"Earlier this morning in class, I think I was hallucinating. And then again, during lunchtime. That's when I decided to come here, but that creepy professor interrupted me and-"
"Hold on. Tell me about the first hallucination." Ms. Almasi was scribbling notes as Zev spoke.
"Well, it wasn't long after class started. I was hungry and upset and then our new teacher gave us a pop quiz!"
"Mmhmm. And then what happened?"
"The teacher was passing out tests and then, he- he was wearing a mask."
"What kind of mask?"
"I'm not sure, but I've never seen one like that before."
"Could you draw it for me, Zev?"
"Yeah, sure."
Ms. Almasi handed Zev a pad of paper and a pencil.

"This looks like a Kabuki mask. And you said he was wearing it?"
"Yes, but then he wasn't. I couldn't believe it."
"Could he have actually been wearing the mask? Maybe you just didn't see where he put it after he took it off."
"I considered that, so I asked my classmate. He said I was seeing things and would feel better after lunch."
"So, he thought you were just hungry?"
""Yeah."
"And, were you?"
"Yes, but that wouldn't be enough to make me see things...could it?"
"What do you think, Zev?"
"I really don't know. I was hoping you could tell me."

"Tell me about the second hallucination you had."
"I just ordered my lunch when my friend Ruth showed up. She tapped me on the shoulder and when I turned around, she looked like a zombie! I don't mean she was dead tired, but literally decaying in front of my eyes!"
Zev motioned in front of his face as he said this.
Ms. Almasi continued taking notes.
"Do you ever wish she were dead?"
"No! Never!"
"Do you feel like she's dying and you need to save her?"
"Ruth? Her life's perfect. She's very much alive."

"Now, tell me about this professor."
"He was a total creep. He said he had been stalking me and something about finding the truth."
"The truth about what?"
"I don't know, but he knew my name. He even said you couldn't help me."
"Did he mention my name?"
"No, he just said 'she', 'she' couldn't help me."

"Zev, I'm gonna say something, and I don't want you to lose control when I tell you, but I overheard your entire conversation with the 'professor'. I was standing right behind you and there was no one there."

1. She must've been standing at the wrong angle.
2. No! Zev IS losing his mind!
3. He probably hallucinated twice, so one more time isn't hard to believe.

Ms. Almasi must've been standing at the wrong angle. There was clearly a man standing in front of Zev back there, whoever he was. Maybe Zev was seeing things, but hearing things, too? Something didn't feel right to him. He was beginning to suspect that they were all playing a practical joke on him.

Bibi was a joker, so Zev could see him doing it easily. Ruth was always kind to him. What would she have to gain from all this? The new teacher was a stranger, so he was an unknown factor, as was the 'professor'. That just left Ms. Almasi.

"Ha, ha. Very funny, Ms. Almasi. I don't know how they convinced you to play along, but I'm not buying it."
Ms. Almasi furrowed her brow, wondering what he was talking about.
"Zev, I don't understand what you're referring to. I'm not 'playing along' with anyone, I'm trying to help you."
Zev stood up and said,
"Ok, sure. It's just a 'big misunderstanding' and I'm 'letting the stress get to me'. " Zev stepped towards the door and chuckled.
"You know, it's kinda funny. He said you couldn't help me and he was right, you can't." With that, Zev opened the door and walked out. There outside the office, standing in the hallway, was the 'professor'.

1. Confront him.
2. Point him out to Ms. Almasi.
3. Tell him, 'You, again. Just leave me alone already.'
