The Battle Slain Wolf
A set of meteors was headed for Earth which would surly destroy much of the Earth. Science gave the people about 6 months to prepare, in which time two different types of bunkers were built: free government-funded bunkers, and expensive pay-your-way in bunkers built by big companies. People retreated into the bunkers as the meteor shower hit, and were there for two months.
Once it was safe to leave, the citizens of Boston emerged to find the city in ruins, and a large crater in the middle of the city, which was impossible to walk around due to the amount of rubble surrounding it, thus dividing the rich from the poor. As a result of the crater, and the lack of modern technology to work around it, two societies were built. While neither society really had the resources to build as comfortable of a life as they wished, the two different approaches at life resulted in two different cultures across the crater, which eventually became a lake.
The lower class built a society on hard work and sweat. Everyone works for what they've got, and no one gets by for free. Most jobs would be working on farms, building new houses, or any other blue collar job possible without the use of much modern machinery. The lower class is worried less about a "common currency" and more about being able to provide, thus resulting in more of a trade system.
The upper class built a society based on knowledge and art. Though luxury is hard to come by, they live life as easily as possible by offering services like medical care, and purifying the lake water for a safe drinking source. The upper class has a currency, which they expect everyone, including the lower class to use when purchasing their services.
A shopping district is set up along the shore of the crater lake on the lower-class side where the lower-class merchants sell their goods to both classes. People from the upper class come over on boats, and will offer paid rides over to the upper-class city for those in need of something like medical care that would only be available in the upper-class city.
