today had been a rather productive today for tomoko yoshida. she had woken up early in the morning just as she always does for her shift. she made herself a good protein shake as tonya chattered with her about hospital politics. tomoko never cared much for hospital politics, but tonya said she needed to know so that she knew who the assholes in the hospitals are. it's not like she worked much in the hospital anyway, the main people she worked with are cops and firefighters, not hospital staff. she listened because tonya needed someone to rant to. often times, the doctors and other nurses are assholes and since tonya is a new staff member, all of the workplace assholes descend onto new blood. she also ran an errand for sam, he wanted to get his great-grandfather's glasses appraised so that he could sell them. she disagreed with sam wanting to sell the glasses as they were heirlooms, a last piece of his great-grandfather but who was she talk to him about it?

the shift for a paramedic usually starts in the early morning and goes through the whole night. she usually works for two days before having a one day break to catch up on sleep. her sleep schedule is basically fucked up. she didn't really care though. she's grown used to the work schedule and it'll probably take a long time to even get her normal sleep schedule back on track.

the patient influx hasn't been too heavy, most calls that she gets on are usually for baseline care, in which she usually takes care of patients right in the house and then take them to the hospital. so far, her calls have been relatively normal. her first patient was a parent calling in concern for her child. turns out he had the flu and needed to be taken care of at the hospital, another patient went into anaphylactic shock after ingesting an allergen. the most stressful case she endured today was at an elementary school, a kid was choking on a piece of food and using the heimlich maneuver, the food was dislodged.

the day passed by pretty quickly, and tomoko was reaching her longest shift break. the news was rather intriguing though, there are reports of strange objects falling out of the sky, crash landing in different areas. she supposed it could just be meteors, it's not like aliens exist right? rolling her eyes to herself for her own imagination, she did a quick check around for patients in the triage and checked the clock. perfect timing. she walks into the back room of the hospital, "hey boss. i'm going out for my break", she announces and her boss nods in acknowledgment. she walks out of the hospital, still wearing her uniform. she takes in the cool night air, walking to the gas station to get some snacks for herself. she had quick conversation with the attendant of the gas station before heading back out. she walks back to the hospital and she yawns tiredly. she continues her aimless walk until she stops next to an empty ambulance.

no one was inside. "perfect... I'll just get some sleep in before my break ends.." she murmurs to herself as she gets inside the emergency vehicle. she sits in the passenger seat, shifting herself comfortably so she can sleep inside. she crosses her arms over her chest, immediately falling into a light doze just in case the driver comes in if they were on call.

after a crash that makes every inch of his frame rattle, he's... actually on earth. there were a few times where he'd wondered if they would actally make it here. but since the war started, he's gotten better and better at taking life one day at a time, so he does what he does best. he focuses on the most pressing problem, and how to fix it.

disguise. this planet has some robotics, but they're all rudimentary and controlled by humans with remote controls. the local life forms will panic if they see him. he's seen pictures of the types of vehicles that humans use for their medical responders, and that's what he wants. there's a chance it's foolish, needless even, to match his disguise to his purpose. but it's important to him all the same.

and with his rather accidental arrival on earth, and the damage he did to the infrastructure, it's not long before a variety of vehicles shows up. which is useful, though really, he can't come up wtih any excuse to go around walking into things.

getting out of the building is a little difficult. nothing on this planet is built to his size, he can tell, and he tries to be careful (although someone's bicycle is flattened in the process).

as the vehicles park, he examines them as carefully as he can without being seen himself. eventually, he chooses the one that looks the most durable. with the decepticons surely close behind, he can't afford to choose something purely on looks. he'll never be a soldier, but he still needs to be able to take a hit for a wounded comrade.

with his disguise form selected, the second problem is finding out where everyone else landed. they'd separated in the atmosphere. he parks near a hospital, to blend in, and starts reviewing things. from what he'd seen of their trajectories, they're all in vaguely the same area, and he's hoping that there's no landmarks in their way. he'd seen a mountain range that looked very close, and doesn't want to have to go looking for one of his friends in there. mountains can be difficult terrain, and in this part of the earth, they are likely to be largely impassable for bots of their size.

fortunately, broadcasting to their private channel results in answers almost right away from ironhide, jazz, and optimus. nothing from bee, yet... whether he's distracted with something else, or has his comms damaged, ratchet isn't sure. the emergency beacon hadn't exactly been the traditional contact method.

he's about to roll out when a human opens the door and climbs inside. ratchet sits quietly, having no idea how to get her out without panicking her. they can't get the attention of human legal authorities so quickly.

besides, there's something familiar about her. ratchet reviews the files and realises almost immediately why she looks familiar. she's the friend of sam witwicky - which means that strange energy signal she carries must be related to the glasses. maybe scaring her away is the wrong choice.

instead, ratchet puts down the door locks and pulls out onto the road.

"optimus, i've located the young female human tomoko yoshida. we're en route to your location."

"how did you find her so quickly?" optimus asks, sounding startled by this early victory.

"it's a long story," ratchet says, rather than admitting he was caught unaware within half an hour of arrival. "have you begun searching for witwicky?"

"i believe we should reform the team before setting our sights on a goal. we are far more likely to be successful if we work together."

and he's right, as he so often is. ratchet just hopes that the human stays asleep until- nope, she's walking up.

"stand by," he says, hoping she won't immediately panic.

jazz quickly recovers from the burning sensation from chassis as he slowly gets up in cybertronian proto-form. he skulks around the field before locating a large building with a large amount of human cars. determined not to be spotted, he quickly scans a silver car. she steps onto the road, transforming into his chosen vehicle mode and racing off to find optimus, based on his location beacon. he revs his engines loudly once he heard the voice of optimus. let's get this show on the road.

tomoko had slowly begun to doze off until she hears the door locks click shot. she opens her eyes, the lids feeling heavy despite how short her moment of rest was, "uh.. excuse me-?", she would have expected the driver to shake her awake or something..not lock the door and oh.. there's no driver.

there's no driver

oh my god there's no fucking driver.

tomoko jostles the car door, her fingers shaking and her eyes widening in visceral panic, this is.. certainly a new situation. just as she was about to bang on the glass and notify the neighborhood that she's going to be kidnapped by a driverless car, she heard a voice on the radio. they say sam's lastname. they say her name. it seems like sam is the one they are looking for. her fingers still grip the car door handle, grasping it tightly to ground her herself as the car starts moving away from the hospital.

she calms down for a moment, taking a deep breath as she realizes she is not in any.. immediate danger. the first rule of being an emergency responder, don't panic and keep a clear head. well.. she failed on the whole don't panic part.... but what was she supposed to do? she sits further up. the car does seem to have some kind of.. presence supposes, though it isn't human. something other wordly. her eyes float to the symbol that's on the radio.. odd.. is this car part of some kind of faction?

"yo, i'm headed to prime's location, anyone heard from bumblebee?", this voice sound slightly more upbeat than the past ones she has heard from. this prime guy seems like their leader. tomoko waits for a quiet moment before clearing her throat to speak.

"so.. you guys are looking for sam witwicky..?" tomoko questions the radio, as it seems that it's the source of where the voices are coming from. she had begun to deduct that perhaps these beings are not out to seek hard against her or any of the people she knows.

"why are you looking for him anyway?" she decides to press a bit further in the questioning, there was a reason they needed sam, and there is a reason why they have also took her with them, "i'm also wondering why you need to take me with you?"

the raven haired girl pauses her questioning as she looks out the window at the scenery of los angeles, she can see the tell tale signs of smoke in the darkness of the night from the meteor landings before. she looks out the front window to see that traffic has begun to pile up with people rubbernecking their heads towards the fires caused by the meteors. she looks down at the radio and spots the ambulance's gps. she notices that that destination would be impossible to get to with the heavy traffic.

"there's a faster way to get where you are going, just turn this corner" tomoko points to a street corner, spruce & 24th place. it seems like whoever these beings are, they seem to be in a dire hurry. she continues to look out the window, wanting to help as best she can. she peeks over to the side view mirror and spots a silver pontiac solstice.. she can faintly see through the window that this car also doesn't have a driver. this night just keeps getting stranger and stranger. she drums her fingers against her thighs feeling the cool polyester of her paramedic uniform, whatever is going on, she'll find out soon enough. the pontiac keeps following the ambulance down the road she had just pointed out.

the human begins panicking, which is pretty much exactly what ratchet had expected. his landing on earth had immediately attracted attention from younglings, most of them yelling with those phones in their hands. that's clearly the preferred form of communication on this planet. he'll have to try to obtain a 'cell phone' so that he can properly communicate with the witwicky boy, if that becomes necessary.

"we have yet to hear from bumblebee," prime says over the radio. "his transmission was incomplete. i believe we will have to search part of the city to narrow down his location."

far from the best news ratchet has ever heard, but bumblebee is probably still alive. isn't he? they can't have come all this way just to be too late. ratchet's so sure that he can figure out how to give bee his voice back, give him back a little piece of himself that he lost in the war.

he'd been worried about bee going off on his own. optimus had pointed out that they needed a good scout on earth, and that bee was one of their best. that they couldn't refuse to give him missions because he couldn't speak. ratchet had understood the point optimus was making, but still... bee is the youngest of them. they've all always felt a little protective of him.

"sam witwicky is the reason we came to earth," ratchet confirms. "he has an artefact that could be the key to saving our planet and our race. your internet records show you with him in many photos. we'll need your help to find him."

so far, what he's seen of humans has not impressed him. he hopes that this one will be brave enough to be of help, instead of just screaming and videoing, like the other ones.

the traffic begins growing worse. should he be worried about someone seeing him without a driver? he has a hologram, like the other bots, but he's never really gotten used to using it. still, optimus had said that this should be a stealth mission. if someone notices him, he'll have to engage the hologram. maybe it should look like ms yoshida. will that allay any suspicions about what she's doing in his cab?

unexpectedly, she offers her aid in navigating the city. can she be steering him in the wrong direction? a slim possibility, but one present, nonetheless. he decides to show a bit of faith in her and turns in the direction she indicates.

"we're changing our route," he relays to jazz. "the human has suggested a faster way to get to the others."

besides, if she's misleading them, it won't take them long to get back on track. with all of them working together, they should be able to find bee before anything drastic happens. unless the decepticons are also already here... but he tries not to think about that too much. bee is a brave and accomplished soldier, but ratchet isn't all too sure that he can take on a decepticon - or a team of them - on his own.

"if you know where sam witwicky is, you should tell us. if our enemies find him first, they will kill him, slowly, and take our only hope."

someone on the sidewalk gives him a strange look, and he decides it's time to use the hologram. it's an older man who looks vaguely like tomoko, though not enough that he could be considered related to her.

tomoko continues to listen to the voices that are speaking through the radio, they mention another name, bumblebee. he must be a member of their team then. by how they talk about him, they seem pretty worried, he must've been the first of them to land on earth. if the government were to find out that alien robot cars with the power to transform were to exist, who knows what they'll do.. she would hate to find that out.

she nods as she takes in what the car has said, and she speaks up again "an artifact? what is it.. specifically if you don't mind me asking?" they couldn't be possibly asking about the items passed down by sam's great grandfather, right? it'd be the most plausible, after all, archibald witwicky was a great adevnturer and had discovered something in the arctic. though, he did go crazy before his findingings could be truly discovered.

the pontiac, who she's come to recognize as jazz, voices through the radio, "affirmative on that, ratchet, i'll follow you" , jazz revs his engine, taking a full turn to follow ratchet down the road. tomoko continues watching the road, pointing out the road occasionally when a turn needs to be taken. she can hear the faint sounds of fire sirens and ambulance siren making there way towards the fires that have surrounded los angeles, she had heard one of the meteors had landed in the stadium and she hopes that everyone is safe.

the ravenette takes a peek at the GPS system on ratchet's dashboard, they seem to be approaching the location quite quickly since she had pointed out the short cut. if she had wanted to mislead them, she would have pointed out a completely different road.

she looks out the window again to see jazz pull up ahead as they get closer to the location. his windows have gotten darker since the last time she saw them, pretty smart since people won't be able to look through his window to see that there is no driver in the seat.

tomoko registers that ratchet has asked her a question about sam, she lets out a quiet sigh, "i can do my best to help but there isn't much to go off of. he sent me a weird video a night ago saying that his car is alive", as she says this, she takes out her phone, messing with the buttons until she finds the video. she looks to the side to find that ratchet has formed a holographic driver as to not appear suspicious. the hologram sort of looked like her if she was a man. out of the corner of her eye, she sees an old man on the side walk giving ratchet a hard side eye before quickly walking away down the side walk with his cane as if pretending not to notice.

just as she was about to play the video, she heard a static voice through the radio. it didn't sound like anyone she has heard over the radio so she assumes this is bumblebee.
"have..witwicky..location at 19045 westly...", the voice is hard to hear, there are different voices and tomoko could tell that whoever this bumblebee is, has used the radio to communicate. sadly, it's quite jumbled. taking out her notepad she began to jot down what was said.

she had driven to many locations beforehand in los angeles, she knows this city like the back of her hand. there are thousands of westly street names, but he gave a very specific zip code. that could only mean... westly avenue. she drove there one or two times for emergency hospital transportation. she wanted to wait to talk about this until they reach a stopping point.

jazz speaks up through the radio again, "optimus, we're approaching your location", the first liuetentant continues to pull up ahead and he turns, making a complete stop with a screech of his tires. the location is a construction site of a very tall building. there wasn't a single human in sight, she assumed that all the construction workers had left before night fall.

"samuel witwicky's great-grandfather, archibald witwicky, somehow met one of our kind. his glasses hold the key to finding something that we desperately need." he still isn't sure exactly how that happened, or how many details he should tell a human. even one that's familiar with sam and probably handled the glasses herself, at some point. but he'd never talked with humans, and he has no idea how much is too much.

besides, optimus is always better at this part. talking to his troops, inspiring them to do as he says, leading them into dangerous situations. ratchet is the one who fixes them up, whenever he can. optimus is the one who convinces them that it's worth risking their lives for something bigger than themselves. though after seeing decepticon malice firsthand, few of them really need convincing to stop them. it isn't something that ratchet holds against him, but sometimes, he would give anything to have this war be over.

he slows as he nears the meeting point, wary that a decepticon might have been able to intercept their transmission, and will be waiting for them. it's impossible to know how many of them are here already. optimus decided on a strike team - just a few of his most trusted bots - and while that means they can be fast and discreet, it also means that they can easily be outnumbered.

despite himself, he taps his brakes briefly when tomoko mentions the video. so bee is alive, or at least he was yesterday. things could change so rapidly... but that's a little bit of hope. optimus had found some way to focus on the mission above all, but ratchet is haunted enough for both of them. he really doesn't want bee on his conscience as well.

"bee," he says urgently when the radio fades out. "bee, are you there? repeat your message."

"bumblebee, if you are there, please,"
optimus says. "we did not hear your location."

there's a hissing electronic sort of noise from ratchet, a cybertronian curse that he doesn't care to translate into human language. if bee is in trouble, then he might not be able to repeat his transmission. and if he can't do that... well, the google indicates that 19045 west-something is an address for a lot of places. far too many if there's an emergency.

he pulls into the building and opens his passenger door once he's stopped. this does not seem like a good time to find out how to transform with a human inside.

"please get out," he says, attempting to sound relatively polite.

an engine revs around the side of the building, and a moment later, a gmc topkick speeds through the wide bay door in the wall to ratchet's left. ironhide transforms the moment he's through, moving into a walk, the cannon on his arm revving with a bright blue light before the light and noise fades and he comes to a stop in front of ratchet.

"there's no humans," he reports, "but we should assume they'll be back tomorrow. optimus is trying to find where bee was calling from. i don't think he's heard anything yet." then he realises ratchet isn't alone, and leans down for a better look. "oh. you've brought a human with you. shall i..."

"no,"
ratchet says firmly, transforming himself. "where's optimus? we need to talk about finding bee." and sam, by extension, but ratchet can't quite bring himself to care about humans as much as optimus does.

the peterbilt cab that had been parked in the corner flashes on its headlights, a moment before optimus unfolds upward. he hits his shoulder on an overhead i-beam, and has to duck to join them without doing any further damage to the infrastructure.

"i have been unable to triangulate bumblebee's location from the message he sent. you said you had a human?" it's then that he notices tomoko, and kneels down for a closer look. "my name is optimus prime. we are autonomous robotic organisms from the planet cybertron. this is my weapons specialist, ironhide, and you have already met our medical officer, ratchet. are you tomoko yoshida, friend of samuel witwicky?"

tomoko flinches as ratchet comes to a stop unexpectedly. she rocks forward slightly in the seat before gaining her bearings. from what she could tell, bumblebee seemed important to the group of bots. she had even more questions than before she stopped herself from asking and pressing further. bumblebee was likely to be the first one to land on earth, perhaps they were worried of what might happen to him. ratchet talked about enemies before and she couldn't help but think, what of these enemies go after sam because sam has the glasses? it chilled her to the bone to even think about sam getting hurt.

when it comes to being a paramedic, nothing can compare to the dread of calling the deceased's kin having to explain what exactly happened. so much guilt. so many what ifs. so much anger and pain directed at her. pulled from her thoughts, she heard ratchet asking her to get out of his vehicle mode. she complies quickly, steadying herself as sitting in the car for some time caused her legs to feel slightly numb. she watches jazz transform into his robot mode, he seems to be stretching for a moment before he leans against one of the concrete pillars of the unfinished building.

she had to stop herself from staring at the transformations of each bot. it was humbling, to know that there are extraterrestrials far beyond earth's atmosphere. breaking herself out of her own stupor, she backs up as the gmc, recognizing his as ironhide because of his voice, got close to her. it wasn't out of fear, tomoko just really liked her personal space. the bots seemed to be waiting for someone. optimus, she guesses. base on how everyone seems to respect him, he might be the leader of this little squad.

she rolls her shoulder back, a habit she developed after injuring her shoulder with third degree burns during a fire rescue gone sour. on her un-injured shoulder, sits her shoulder strap bag. she always carries first aid on her person.

jazz moves to stand by ratchet and ironhide as a large peterbilt cab drove in from the corner. she watches him transform, less distracted now that she's seen it a few times. from the corner of her eye, she observes how jazz stiffens up and she only assume that this is the infamous optimus prime they keep talking about. she winces a bit when the bot seems to bump his shoulder on the way inside.

instinctively, she steps back when optimus gets close to her. seriously, these guys have no idea about personal space!

when optimus asks about her identity, she nods, "that would be me". she took a moment to observe the big mech, his most distinct feature to her are his little fins. very reminiscent of cat ears in her opinion. she blinks and looks to jazz as he clears his throat

jazz steps forward, "optimus, i tried to run the location given to us by bumblebee's incomplete transmission via the human's gps. it has given varied answers". he can feel the frustration mounting in his processor. he normally would never question the prime, as optimus has always been sound in the decisions that he made, but jazz couldn't help but feel doubt on this one. bee is the youngest of their team and his voicebox was removed during the war. at first jazz was happy that bee had gotten his first mission since the incident and he had no doubt that the scout would do well by optimus. However, because bee has no voice box, it would be difficult to communicate with him, and now this mission could perhaps be jeopardized. at least bee has the human boy, sam witwicky with him.

tomoko moves to grab her gps toggle and her notepad where she wrote down the transmission bumblebee had tried to make. she opens up her gps toggle, her eyes narrow with concentration as she thinks deeply, sam is in california, which means bumblebee by proxy would be there as well. this narrows down her options exponentially. 19045 is a house code, she decides to enter the house code first on her gps toggle. unknown to her, jazz had leaned down rather close to her to see what she's doing, she makes no move to get away since she's deep in thought. the gps comes up with 19045 westly avenue, and based on the map, it's a dead end alley way in los angeles.

with the human out of his passenger seat, ratchet is able to focus more on what's happening around him. humans are fine, they're just so... delicate. it kind of - what's the human phrase? - creeps him out. even a sparkling would be durable enough to withstand an accidental nudge or two from a fully grown bot, but he doubts a human would ever be able to do the same. he find himself watching where he puts his feet. if they step on a human as soon as they find it, optimus will never let them hear the end of it. worse, he'll probably even use that not mad, just disappointed tone. ratchet hates that.

all things considered, though, the human is taking things well. ratchet had consolidated a lot of information about trauma responses in humans, and how to aid them. he assumed that most humans seeing them would panic in some way, perhaps even try to endanger them.

this one does not. this one seems intent on helping them. ratchet assumes that that's only because the life of her friend samuel witwicky is at stake, but he appreciates it all the same. for all his knowledge, he is definitely not equipped to handle a human intent on hurting him. he's not exactly worried about one person, but earth has many records of humans' ability to work together to create great monuments and feats. he doesn't want to give them any reason to band against him, or the rest of the autobots.

though if they ever decide to go against the decepticons? well, he'll gladly back them up, if that becomes the case. humans may be able to figure out some things on their own, but he doubts they'll be able to kill a decepticon without assistance. and bots like that need no reason to see anyone around them as a threat. if humans take any step against them, there will be retaliation.

"optimus, we should talk about our next step," he suggests.

optimus sighs heavily, and nods in agreement, his optics switching up to meet ratchet's gaze.

"i am beginning to worry that sending bumblebee here alone was a foolish choice. i trusted him as a warrior, but perhaps as a friend..."

though with the ever-growing distance between himself and the rest of the bots, perhaps he could not truly call himself their friend any more, only their leader. was it better that way? he didn't think he'd ever be sure. regardless, his duty to protect them, must come before any other desire he has. except that to protect the humans, the innocent lives caught in the crossfire of a war that he wishes had never come to their planet. but now it is here, and so are the autobots. at least the humans will not have to bear this alone. that is more than could be said for some of the cultures that the decepticons ravaged in their quest for the allspark.

he moves on from his guilt before he can think about it too much.

"i believe our processors may not be entirely compatible with human resources," he says. it's not something he wants to admit, but it seems like the most likely explanation for why bee's transmission is giving them so much trouble. "we should begin exploring ways of interfacing with a system designed for humans. i have read that their 'public libraries' are terminals for humans to freely access a variety of information."

he's so used to buildings being made for bots of their scale, that he doesn't realise the doors are all human-sized.

"maybe this human can help with that," ironhide suggests. "she's doing something over there."

optimus' attention returns to the human in question.

"if you are aware of something that may help us, tomoko, i implore you to give us aid. we are in search of something, and someone, who is very important to us. it is not only the fate of our world that relies on this, but the fate of our friend. i would save him if i had any choice in the matter."
