Advice/Help Toying with some Space Opera concepts

I apologise if this thread isn't entirely in the right place since it's basically more of an 'Interest Check for an Interest Check' as I'm trying to gauge people's preferences before I delve deeper into creating a more tangible concept and risk GMing for the first time.

Essentially, I've noticed through reading some new and old-ish threads over the last few days that there's a semi-decent audience here for a Space Opera RP and since that's personally right up my alley and since there seems to be a general lack of ICs for Space Operas, I'm starting to lean towards possibly GMing my first RP.

With that said, my main question really is about scale, which of these would you as a prospective participant in such an RP prefer?

1. Small Scale

Essentially one character (excluding minor 'NPCs') per player. This doesn't necessarily mean the scope of the story itself will be small in nature but I suppose it would end up being a lot more personal.

2. Large Scale

This might be a bit of an odd one since I always thought this is what Nation RP was but based on the threads I've seen here and the more 'game-y' nature of them, I may have misunderstood somewhat. But essentially what I mean for this one is that each player would control a faction or a spacefaring species and of course several characters within that. As an example, the RP could involve some sort of galactic-level threat that forces a coalition to form between multiple species in order to prevent it. This would be less about describing overarching political intrigue or troop movements but to have interesting characters within your species and how they fit into the story. That's not to say you can't have those 'grander' things, it's just that they're absolutely not the focus and would or should happen through a relevant character. I don't know how well I'm explaining this really and I really wish I could link the old RP I was in unfortunately it was on a long-dead forum for which the Wayback Machine doesn't have enough snapshots.

I am of course willing to answer any questions or discuss things further and hopefully if there's enough interest we can get into setting up an actual RP!

I believe this thread belongs in the RP Discussion forum rather than recruitment, so you might want to ask a mod to move it for you.

To answer your question, I believe there is an audience for both your ideas- a small classic Space Opera group RP would, I'm sure, have many interested players, and there is a distinct lack of futuristic, spaced-based RPs in Nation Building where you control entire factions and armies, so I suspect that would be likely to garner interest as well.

I am a very easy sell for space opera with a decent story - I'd be deeply interested in a 'small scale' story. I write great captains! I also write great lower-deckers.

For one, yes... this is more of a discussion as Ayama Ayama stated.

This sounds more like it's in the realm of Nationbuilder RP if that's what you decide to go with, since each player would be placed in charge/control of an entire faction or species.

Nationbuilder RP interest checks go here:

That being said, I'm one of those individuals who lives and breathes for the Space Opera/Space Western genre. It is hands fown my favorite genre to read, write, and enjoy movies/series in. Though, I'm really not interested in roleplaying more than a single individual in their personal plight within your setting. I play all sorts of roles, captains, criminals, mechanics, etc. But I don't want to undertake something as broad as a species, a faction, or even a just the crew in a ship. I'm interested only in the small scale option for this roleplay (unless this RP is taking on a military theme, then I'm out entirely).

I initially thought it might fit the nation builder forum too but like I said based on nearly every thread I checked out there, none of it seems to really align with what I'm thinking of. This kind of RP would still be character focused and not deal with 'stats' or anything like that. In a way the only difference between a small scale single character RP and this would be that you could have more characters. Major or minor ones, as many (to a reasonable extent, of course) or as few as you want or need. I realise the scale of it might imply a nation building RP but in my mind it wouldn't be about power players or military might (unless any of it is actually relevant to the story) and it wouldn't be as open ended as most of the Nation RPs I've seen. The goal is still to tell an interesting story just with a bigger scope. The 'theme' certainly wouldn't be military, if you as a player had no particular interest in exploring the military of your species or having a character that's in the military that would absolutely not exclude you from the story since the story might have conflict but that conflict would absolutely not just be 'big armies with big sticks', I'm not really interested in that myself. And that again ties into it being character focused and story focused. It's kind of difficult to explain without an example on hand.

Having said all that...It seems like the opinion so far is leaning towards small scale, which is just fine by me. Probably a wiser pursuit too given my lack of experience as a GM.
