I'm gonna make a backstory so good, that you'll be jizzity jamming and 360 directions. How does Neo-Roman Imperial Gladiator turned Mercenary turned Pirate sound?

Sounds good. Maybe he was backstabbed by some of the companies we will rob.

Well, I've come up with a story that he served with a mercenary faction called the Solis Militibus (formed solely by escapee Gladiators), a founding member of the Coalition of Armed Mercenary Corporations, and left after he discovered that his trusted friend (who was the leader) had been selling women and children to the Novus Ordo. He really just became a pirate so he could challenge the leadership.
