  In many cases, Evie's biggest strength comes out to be her biggest downfall—the fact that once she sets her mind to something, there's absolutely no stopping her from going forward. It can pay to be decisive; It can also be costly, when the thing she's decided on isn't fully thought out. Stubborn to a fault, there's no changing Evie's mind after she's started course, and she'll sink cost into things that show no sign of actually giving back. Her enthusiasm is clear, regardless of what she's setting out for. Evie has always been a "people person"—though she was never part of the cooler crowd growing up, she found a way to be friends with nearly anyone she came across. For some, her unrelentingly upbeat nature is exhausting, but it's hard to escape her once she's set her sights on your friendship.   Evita was born the middle child of three, though only barely—the gap in age was enough for each to be in a different grade, but only just. She was lucky to be the only girl, if only so she didn’t have to share a room with her brothers. Her family wasn’t exactly well off, but they got by; Her parents were second generation immigrants from Cuba, and they continued the legacy of working as hard as possible to give their kids a better life. Her and her brothers were raised speaking Spanish, in a neighborhood where that was the norm—it was almost commonplace for her classmates to act as translators for their parents, and it was an easy way to talk behind the backs of their many monolingual teachers.
  
  Not that Evie was a part of that kind of talk. She was a teacher’s pet by any definition, looking up (and sucking up) to any instructor she had. It was understood early on that she wanted to become a classroom teacher, as the kind of universal truth no one who knew her would deny. Her motivations weren’t as simple as being like her role models, necessarily—she had also gotten used to the experience of translating for fellow students and adults on either side of the language barrier, and became determined to fill her role helping other children overcome it. She followed the path she said she would, and ended up right at Hemlock High, for better or for worse. PHYSIQUE: As someone who played sports for the majority of his life, demetrius is in shape. He has a strong and sturdy physique. With his endomorph type body he still holds a layer of softness that stubbornly clings to him. Demetrius is 6’2 and weighs 238lbs.

PERSONALITY: A sports fanatic, a young man who easily fits into the label of a jock. It doesn’t matter what the sport may be, Demetrius will always be in front of the tv, cheering his teams on and donning their colors. He could go in for hours about players, coaches, and plays. Talking comes easily to him, he has always been somewhat of a motormouth. He tries to curb this flaw of his thought, having been scolded for it throughout his life. People tend to see him as the strong, brooding type and he honestly has no idea why.

In all actuality Demetrius is more laid-back than brooding. He is not someone who gets upset easily, his patience is one of his best qualities. It takes a lot to get him heated as he’s able to distance himself and gain his composure before doing anything irrational. Demetrius doesn’t like being angry, he finds it exhausting. Instead he tries to vent in other ways, ways that are healthy and not harmful. It can be said that he’s pretty chill or even boring in this regard. His ability to ignore or brush off upsetting things is admirable.

Demetrius is definitely an extrovert through and through. With his big smile and disarming personality, he makes friends quite easily. Though he is more selective with who he hangs out with because of his child, Demetrius enjoys the company of other people. He’s not afraid of walking up to a person and striking up a conversation. Demetrius is warm, definitely a people person.

HISTORY: Demetrius was born to janet, a high school secretary, and darius, a mechanic. The little family of three was not rich by any means but they had food on the table, clothes on their back, and plenty of love to keep them happy. Demetrius was lucky enough to be the son of two loving parents who did their best to not let him go without.

His father would take his son out whenever he could. It was during their outings that demetrius discovered his love for sports, especially football. From the moment he latched on, his father had told him that he would be something special and he took those words to heart, joining the community team as soon as he was old enough.

Demetrius was known as a silly little boy around the neighborhood and that didn’t change once his highschool years came. He was popular with his peers, a jock yet not the stereotypical ones that you’d see on tv. Demetrius was not a bully, instead he was kind to his peers. Though he did follow the pattern of dating the head cheerleader in school, even if his eyes wandered to some of the guys around school. He was quiet about his attraction, afraid of being outcasted because of who he was.

For a time life was simple for him, the sky seemed to be his only limit and he was enjoying is immensely. With graduation came a football scholarship that promised him a future in the big leagues. He worked tirelessly on the field to achieve his goals. But will success came jealousy and ill intentions. Demetrius didn’t even see the people who had did it. An injury to his leg left him unable to play and with a permanent limp when he walks. It took him a while to recover, with his spirit dampened it took a little longer that what was considered normal. But with the help of those close to him Demetrius was able to dust himself off and rise. He continued his education as a Health and Human Performance Major and Human Physiology Minor.

Demetrius has a dream of starting his own gym. Rome wasn’t built in a day as they say and so he decided to put that dream on the back burner for now. Demetrius decided to apply for Teach For America in the meantime and help educate young minds about the importance of fitness.

Havana Rose Lombardi is the second child to Francene and Vito Lombardi, a couple who had owned a small bakery in Hemlock, WA, with an social butterfly older sister-- The younger sister had typically kept to herself growing up, surrounding herself with paints, poetry, and potions in the backyard. Havana was always a wildcard-- but in a good way. The brunette had picked up more hobbies and interests than anyone who's lived a full life.

They were dropped pretty often, too. She's never been one for stability and it showed. Rebellion started at the early age of 8, spray painting the garage door when she felt wrongfully grounded for snapping her older sister's Britney Spears CD in half after a four hour repeat of the same song.

It only started there, but her vision of what was right and wrong changed as she grew older, Havana had started advocating and attending protests for things that she felt mattered.

Her life direction continued to spiral while she couldn't decide on a path. She had the idea to open her own bakery, (she's not that good at baking, but learned a thing or two from her parents) then Havana believed she wanted to be writer, (that failed) when she was fourteen she considered becoming a professional ballerina! Listen, she wasn't very realistic when it came to things like this-- it would've been a good idea if she had taken any classes beforehand. She worked many jobs as a teenager.

Waitress, lifeguard, office aide, secretary, cashier, dogwalker and finally, a bagger at the grocery store.

Not bad right?

Havana was fired from all of them. While all were creative and different outcomes-- it was always because of the same reason. Whether it'd be her showing up late, not a strong work ethic, or just not getting it...

Havana was a liability.

When college admissions came, Havana didn't bother telling her life-long best friend, Evita Garcia that she was applying to NYU's Art Program on the account that she didn't believe she'd get in.

She wound up receiving a scholarship to said university and come graduation, Evie and Havana had broken off their friendship-- due to reasons "unknown." Havana just believes that... Evie changed-- and she stood exactly the same. Some people just grew up and others were stuck in their dreamlike reality.

Her time at NYU was amazing. She shadowed other artists and had the opportunity to showcase her work at another gallery in Manhattan, went on multiple trips to places like Barcelona, Greece, Italy, London, Rome-- and was in a "committed" relationship by the time she was 23.

She was offered to showcase her art at the same gallery, but every other weekend-- it was a great offer.

And Havana was about to accept the offer until she'd gotten a phone call that her older sister, Ramona had passed away in a car accident on the way to pick up her daughter from school.

Instead of living in a penthouse in New York and having full creative control of her "own" gallery, Havana is now back home, renting a two bedroom apartment in Hemlock, Washington, working at the same school she attended and raising her fourteen year old niece.

Spoiler alert! She definitely doesn't have this guardian thing down.

Camilo was raised in a household of five: his mom, his dad, his two older sisters, and him. As the youngest, and as the boy, Camilo had it easy growing up. His mom coddled him, his dad showed him more attention that he did his sisters, and he always got away with every little thing. It took a long time for Camilo to realize his home life wasn't as good as it seemed.

He was in middle school when he first realized how hard it was for his parents to make ends meet. His mom worked two jobs and his dad had a tile business, but it just wasn't enough for three kids. His sisters never had a hope for college and both took on part-time jobs by the time they turned fifteen. Camilo, though, Camilo had to go to college. Have a future. That's what they always said.

In high school, his eldest sister got pregnant. That's when he found out she actually had dreams of her own. She wanted to become a nurse, but with a kid she had no time. Camilo started to fear the concept of commitment for the first time. He realized his parents had to have had dreams too, didn't they? Camilo was too scared to ask.

Camilo's family scraped together the money for college and with the help of scholarships and a small loan, he made it. He was meant to study business and... he did, for a year. Photography had always been his passion, though, and so Camilo quietly changed majors his sophomore year. His parents never knew. He was supposed to become a businessman and be successful enough to support the family. How could he tell them he chose one of the hardest professions to live off of instead?

By the end of his college years, there was no way Camilo could hide it any further. It was the first time his mom had told Camilo she was disappointed in him. He was devastated. Out of guilt, Camilo pursued a program which would earn him his teaching credentials. He still did his photography work on the side, of course, but accumulating a following hadn't been an easy process for him.

Once Camilo earned his credentials, he applied to every school in the county. This landed him a position at Hemlock High (and not his old high school, thank god). Camilo has sworn to himself he will only stay at Hemlock for year and that by the time that year is over, his photography gig will be enough. It has to be.

  Having been a pacifist since 13 years old, Ophelia has always had a calm and peaceful demeanor. She is not one to loose her cool easily (if at all) and tends to stay very controlled in tense or awkward situations. She is at peace with herself and her emotions, which gives her a better understand of how to stay calm. She tends to be a voice of reason when asked for her opinion, and never lets her emotions completely overrun her logic. Only lightly guide it. Of course, she is still a teacher, and is not afraid to call out blatantly rude or inappropriate behavior. Her tactic is not to shut it down by brute force, but rather make those acting out aware that their actions are childlike and just embarrassing rather than ‘cool’, or having a ’boss bitch’ attitude. There is a diffrence between confidence and arrogance, and she will call you out if you cross the line.
  
  She is always open to people coming to talk to her about problems or even just questions. All of her students (and other teachers) will soon be made aware of her open door policy outside of class time. With this helpful nature does bring about an issue with saying no to requests made by friends, but it isn’t something that completely hinders her. She will always try to be honest in the kindest way possible, but if theres no way to say it nicely than she’ll put it bluntly.
  
  Her main flaws are probably that she is easy to trust others words, which leads to assuming a right or wrong side to the story, and the fact that she doesn’t know when to stop asking questions until its spelled out that someone doesn’t want to speak on the matter. In addition, she can be very ‘ditsy’. This includes forgetting to respond to texts, ceasing to pay attention in the middle of conversations that are too boring or un-important, ect. While a small part of this can be contributed to her past injury, she refuses to use it as an excuse for her lack of attention span and takes full responsibility when she zones out.

  history

  Ophelia was born in the south of Georgia, on the good side of Savannah. She grew up being used to warm weather and lots of lake/pool days. Her early years were spent helping her mama in the kitchen, reading a chapter of a book at night with her parents, and learning how to properly grow your own herbs for tea and cooking. Reading came easy to her which meant studying came easy to her; both a blessing and a curse. Every kid is bullied at some point, Ophelia's just came about when she was just about to go to middle school. The older kids would always be frustrated that she was able to keep up with the reading level and take extensive notes.
  
  One day, at a class event a classmate pushed her into the pool to pick on her. Unfortunately, she hit her head on the side which disoriented her enough that someone had to jump in and save her from drowning. Ever since, swimming has made her incredibly nervous and she prefers to stay far away from the edge of the pool. The injury wasn’t anywhere near fatal, but due to this event she can tend to loose focus or her train of thought similar to how someone with ADHD functions, minus the high energy.
  
  As a teen, her father was diagnosed with lung cancer, partially due to how much he smoked as a teen. Within two years he lost his battle, and died due to the cancer. It was something they saw coming and prepared for, but for her that always made it a little bit worse. Knowing someone you loved was dying but you can’t do anything for them. She wrestled with his death all through her highschool years and even struggles with it now. Something she especially struggled with was how three years after her fathers death, her mother met a nice man who treated her well, and fell in love. While Ophelia had some struggles with accepting this, she can genuinely say she has a good healthy relationship with her stepfather, and while he doesn’t expect for her to call him dad, he does treat her as if she was his own.
  
  When it was time for college, Ophelia always remembered how her father raved about Washington state, how it was one of the best and he loved the weather as a stark contrast from the south. She wanted to understand him better and his obsession with the state, so she decided to apply herself in getting a few academic scholarships to go to a college there. She succeed, and went to college to get and education degree and hopefully become a professor. Unfortunately, it didn’t exactly line up perfectly. She needed a job, one she could hold to help pay the bills while she finished her online masters that she needs to become a college professor. Lucky for her, a high school was in recent need of a literary teacher. She applied and was accepted, and plans on working at the school on the weekdays and a ghost writer as a side bit.   Matteo has a wiry frame, skinny enough at 5'9 that his mother never let him leave the dinner table without seconds.   At least, that's the way it looks to anyone he comes across. He almost has an air of not being present, consistently seeming disinterested in whatever happens in front of him. In the case that he does seem to care, he only switches to seeming smug. The guy's never been easy to get along with, and it wouldn't even be fully wrong to write him off as someone trying to coast by.   Since he was born, Matteo has been haunted by a single word; Potential.
  
  It was what his parents and every teacher saw in him growing up, the potential to do something great. Certainly, he was a smart kid, but doing anything with that required applying himself. That was another phrase that seemed to always be thrown around when he was in the conversation.
  
  It wasn't Matteo's biggest concern, though. He continued to do what he always did: Whatever he wanted, which really wasn't much. Matteo never had any big ambition, and he mostly just followed his whims. When he got a bachelors in psychology and realized how much more school it would take to be a fully fledged psychologist, he took the easier option: A graduate degree in counseling, which was his next best bet with where he had gotten. From there, he applied to the first school he found, and has worked there ever since as the school counselor. He enjoys the job enough to keep doing it; Helping the kids can be rewarding, sometimes even fun, though he would never say that out loud. In his case, actions speak louder than words—actions like applying to a program which would get him a trained therapy dog, all for out of pocket fees, so he could bring it to the students. Then again, he wanted a dog anyway. Despite Henry's seemingly old-fashioned behavior, he always appears slightly unkempt. His shaggy hair that sometimes hangs low in his face, ever-present five o'clock shadow that inevitably becomes a beard, and penchant for wearing casual clothes at work would land judgmental glances in the administration office were it anyone but Henry Ducane. Tall, broad shouldered, and with a body hardened by years of physical labor... His presence can be succinctly described as "intimidating". With it, Henry carries a near-constant sober expression - somewhere between expressionless and a scowl - and a deep, gruff voice that seems to rumble from his chest like thunder. Still, though, he is nearing the age where he is beginning to see the buddings of greying hair sporadically dot his head and beard, he has the beginnings of laugh line wrinkles forming at the corners of his eyes, and his skin is dotted with freckles that betray his affinity for the outdoors. He is typically seen wearing jeans, boots or sneakers on his feet, and a flannel shirt and/or a t-shirt - which has made students call him a "lumberjack" from time-to-time.

Personality

Blunt and seemingly always grumpy, Henry is generally seen as an intimidating and unapproachable figure. However, part of it is an unintentional façade; he's just a stoic guy. At times he can appear judgmental, but this is mostly because he is honest and a bit hard-set in his ways. He's someone who does not like to put on airs about something, he would rather be straight-up. He likes concrete, physical, real things and people. Despite him being hard to approach, he does enjoy giving advice to others and isn't afraid to air out his honest opinion - although he's not very talkative in the first place. Once someone has gotten used to his regular demeanor, people tend to realize he has a really calm and easygoing attitude. Because of this, he is a bit of a divisive figure to the students on campus; some hate him because they find him strict and demanding with his no-nonsense attitude, and others who have gotten on his good side enjoy his dad jokes, sarcasm, and up-front realness. Because of this, some students say he is like a "bear" - either a scary grizzly who would bite your head off, or a sweet teddy bear.

Backstory

Henry Ducane grew up in a small town in Washington - not a Hemlock High alumni, but rather from a different town where trees outnumbered people by far. He grew up an outdoorsy boy, and the plethora of chores and jobs he had growing up led to him having an appreciation both for nature and manual labor; he also grew to be community-oriented, and longed to help people.


With this intention in mind, Henry joined the military fresh out of high school, and was shortly thereafter deployed to Afghanistan. He doesn't talk about his experiences at war, but he returned a jaded young man with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He still gets jumpy at sudden, loud sounds.


Henry had always had an affinity for history, and decided to go into the teaching profession instead; he returned to school to get his credential, and got his first job at a middle school that fed into Hemlock High. Just two years into his tenure there, the district moved him to the high school, and he's been there ever since. He's in his eleventh year teaching, and he's very fond of his school and his job - as well as the students (well... most of them). Now he's one of the most senior teachers at the school, which... is a little concerning. Hope these new guys stick around, for the sake of the kids.

Relationships

Lady: Henry's dog; an australian shepard. Excitable, friendly, and cuddly. She can get Henry to smile and laugh very easily. He treats her like a baby. He likes to take her on hikes, walks, and likes to play with her. She has a lot of toys. He found her abandoned on the side of a road one day when she was a puppy, and initially was not intending to keep her. However, a few vet visits later, as he helped nurse her back to health, and as it became apparent that there is no one looking for her, Henry fell in love and decided he would keep her.

He's the club advisor for the D&D club on campus, and is currently DMing a campaign for them. Sometimes they paint minis together.

Losing his hearing from both his time in the military and from listening to loud music too much. Annoys his students by constantly asking them to speak up.

He tends to keep his classroom cold. He claims he has a very low tolerance for heat because his body's internal temperature regulation was "blown out" in Afghanistan. Because the classroom's AC system is wonky, he has a hair dryer duct taped to the wall pointed up at the AC unit; if he wants the AC to kick on, he turns on the hair dryer and has it run for a second, and the AC unit thinks it's much hotter than it actually is in the room and starts blasting cold air. He's been told to remove this feature. He refuses to do so.
