Personal Jesus
Depeche Mode
overview.
The small town of Madeline. A sleepy little place in the middle of nowhere, its main selling point being a massive ranch on the outskirts of town, it doesn't see much foot traffic traveling through on the road, and every newcomer is regarded with uncertain wariness. There's a quiet restlessness in town though, as there have been rumors as of late that a group of bandits have slaughtered the next town over, pillaged and burnt to the ground. One of many in the area, but by far the most brutal as of yet. Last time the bandits tried, the town barely managed to fend them off - with many of the veteran fighters having been slaughtered in the fight. The bandits since have only gotten stronger, and more desperate as easy pickings have been taken already. Quietly anticipating their arrival, the town has decided to prepare for the worst - and that's when the newcomer has ridden into town.

The Sheriff
taken
Slightly green around the gills, the sheriff is relatively new compared to the old one who died in the fight against that bandit group a while back, though unlike the deputy he has actually seen battle. He was the deputy before, and has since tried filling in some massive shoes left behind. Unsure of what's to come, the sheriff has vowed to protect the town with his life.
The Deputy
taken
Somehow even more inexperienced than the sheriff, not only is the deputy rather green around the gills, but they've matured into adulthood what felt like only a couple of months ago. They haven't even shot off their gun before, or caught one of the local rascals for trying to lift some candy from the general shop, much less deal with the looming threat of the nearby bandit clan.
The Rancher
taken
One of the few points of interest in this sleepy town, the rancher owns the big ass ranch on the outskirts of town. They breed cattle, horses, and dogs mostly, and sell them to whoever needs 'em. Needless to say, they're one of the few reasons anyone would ever come to such a place, and flaunt a kind of power over the town. The rancher, though, was not the original owner as its been passed down about two generations at this point - the previous owner has also recently died.
The Farmhand
taken
Another relatively new person - the farmhand came into town about half a decade back looking for work and found it working on the ranch. They tend to the animals day in and day out, and sleep in a house on the farm. Backbreaking work, but they seem to take to it pretty alright. Though, the town is still awfully wary of them - outsider and all that.
The Bartender
taken
Always a gentleman, the bartender is there to lend you an ear and give you a toothful of gin. With a charming wink and a smile, it's easy to be swept up in their charms and spill your heart out. They know most - if not all - of the gossip in town. Pay them well enough, and you might get yourself a couple of stories. Some factual, some not so much. But there is no better place to have a good time - or if you're the sneaky type, gather intel.
The Peddler
taken
The owner of the general goods store, the previous owner has also - you guessed it - recently passed away due to the run-in with the bandit clan. Also the most privy to the out of town rumors, they're good for pretty much any kind of knick knack you might be needing.
The Outcast
taken
Nobody really knows why the outcast was ostracized, maybe they chose to be, maybe they didn't. But all the town knows is that the outsider is not one of them - they aren't in the know. They're... different. An outsider, even though they've lived in town most their life. Tread carefully with them, you don't know what you're getting.
The Newcomer
open
Riding in from who knows where, the newcomer is looking for a place to settle down away from whatever worries they'd left behind. Settling into a small sleepy town in the middle of nowhere? Well, far away from any kinda trouble you're gonna get. They're here to stay - that is if the townsfolk don't chase them off before the newcomer can really settle in.
Free
open
This is just for anyone who wants to have something different than what's given. Basically it's an "anything that you think might enrich the world outside of what's provided" space. I don't mind.
rules
rules.
rule one.
There will be absolutely no tolerance for bigotry out of character. That being said, there may be some in the setting and potentially in character considering the time period that this is set in so keep that in mind if this may be a trigger. It will be handled with as delicately as possible, and there will be trigger warnings involved, but do not join if that is one of your triggers. This is set in the southwest, in a time where people were not nearly as tolerant (even though historically most people indulged). This, however, is absolutely no excuse for genuine displays of racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia. If there are any displays of such behavior you will be kicked immediately.
rule two.
Please have a discord, and respond to the interest check. I will set up the character sheet form when I think there's been enough interest. CS due date will also be given at a later time when enough interest has been garnered. You may only apply and begin with one character, however upon acceptance you may create more.
rule three.
I will be requiring at least three decently sized paragraphs per response, with decent enough grammar and spelling. Third person. This will be a literate roleplay. It's required that you remain active - if not in the responses, then at least in the discord. Character ages should remain within the 20s-30s range considering most of the "veterans" died.
