Resting Witch Face

Immidiately Ada regretted angering the man, and as he fled the scene the shrieking behind them didn't fill her with much confidence. Looking around, she was at a loss for words, her eyes darting all over in a vain attempt to find somewhere to hide. As she came to her senses, the shadow of a horrible being came into view, perched atop a great cathedral tower. It had to be something out of a horror novel, grotesque and gigantic, screaming bloody murder as it's dark spawn closed in on the group. All at once the situation hit her, and one clear thought introduced itself to her, a light as brilliant as the morning sun. All of her reservations about the suspicious man were cleared.
"RUN!" She cried, darting off in the direction the haggard man named Thomas had fled.
The deafening sound of a hundred claws scraping against the withering stone of the streets, as the beast horde drew near. Ravenous as they were, the winding alleyways and stone streets served to slow their ranks down considerably. As Ada bolted around the corner and through a deserted street, she desperately searched for a way to hide from the oncoming beasts. Surely vaulting over a fence wouldn't stop that many flesh-hungry abominations, and it's not like there were many fences to jump now that Ada had used her one and only jacket. Cursing her luck, she went for her bottle of dubiously acquired alcohol, which had disappeared in the frenzy.
As she looked up, a foul temper building up within her, she noticed a peculiar sight. There were great waves of smoke rolling out across this alleyway, coming from around a winding corner. She didn't slow her pace, but she did at least catch a whiff of the smoky fog. Curiously, it smelled of a dull incense, something you would smell burning in a church or perhaps an eastern shop. As she followed the rolling waves, with her band no doubt behind her, she noticed that the wailing and frenzied scratching of hungry beasts had dulled. Could they have lost them so easily?
"Must have thrown off their noses with this haze. Who would be burning incense at a time like this?"
