Hey all!
So, I was asked by a certain someone to put together an adventurous sci-fantasy sort of something, something that could be collectively worldbuilt as we prepare to head into it, so herein is the pitch for such a thing. Concept art for the visual feel will appear sometime soon.
Here's a few basics of what I have so far that we can build off of:
"Of all the nations in the sky, the greatest, of course, was Westerly.
The post-war optimism following the Wingwars of 1640 kicked into full swing, and the country's manufacturing capabilities bumped tremendously thanks to the increased refining of Sparkwell, a highly-reactive chemical mined from the undersides of floating landmasses. Wages and Government-funded study of the Aetherial Sciences increased, leading to a golden age of mass-media, automotive and personal-air industry, and the onset of rampant consumerism. Despite warnings from environmentalists that the depletion of Sparkwell may have widespread ramifications, the quality of life in the sky had never been better; the 1654 Census reported a TV in nearly every home, sleek, chromed-and candy-colored cars roamed the highways alongside gleaming, deco buildings, while matching planes roamed the skyways, bringing advancements from nation to nation.
Yet, this time of peace and prosperity does not come without a hanging shadow. Word comes from across the skyways that another nation, recently coming into its own following the war, is developing a fleet unlike any the sky has ever seen, comprised of fighter planes that Westerly birds have nothing on. As Westerly begins ramping up its production factories, drafting houses, Sparkwell plants, and Aetherial schools, preparing for a technological race unlike any other before, citizens remain on-edge, reading papers and watching the news, ears primed for the first sounds of all-too-familiar air raid sirens. It is in these already-troubled times that a group of treasure hunters, aboard their converted Wingwar bomber, make a discovery at the very edge of the skyways that has the potential to tilt the world into further chaos."
Here's a few brainstorming notes on the above:
-- The technological levels, aesthetics, and culture, are roughly analogous to aspects of the 1940s and 1950s.
-- The Aetherial Sciences involve aspects of reality manipulation, potentially on a personal scale.
-- How long humanity has been in the sky, and what lies on the ground, is unknown.
Is this something that would interest anyone?
