  Some information before you get started on your character application...
  
  Our unfortunate search party will be made up of a friendship group (and a younger sibling) to the Harrington twins. Characters will be aged from 21-24 years old considering they either met Nathaniel and/or Violet during their school or college years. For reference, the twins are twenty-two years old and reside in Manhattan, New York City, both having grown up there and now attending college there. Your character doesn't have to reside in Manhattan, but at the very least is nearby considering the group have always been 'close-knit' in proximity.
  
  The pre-made roles (including THE UNDECIDED roles) are to have pre-existing relationships with all members of the friendship group. When creating characters — for clarity sakes — please use role names when referencing characters that are not the Harrington twins considering the roles have not been assigned (e.g., Bianca had always been close to THE LOVER). No relationships/dynamics have to be set in stone, or elaborated on when creating characters (unless specified by the role description) but that will/may change when plotting occurs in the Discord.
  
  While the pre-made roles to have some dynamic/relationship requirements with others, you are free to go crazy with everything else. For example, THE SHADOW does not need to be a biological sibling, or might only be related to one of the twins' parents.
  
  If you have any questions please don't be afraid to ask in the OOC temp thread or DM me (especially if you want to workshop or query about THE UNDECIDED roles).
  
  — CHARACTER APPLICATIONS
  
  I have no set character sheet skeleton and you can include as much or as little information as you like. This can be done in the traditional format or more of a prose that gives us a detailed snapshot of who your character is (or a mix of both!). All I require is mention of the information below in whatever format you choose!
  
  THE BASICS.

  First and foremost, this is a semi-advanced literate roleplay which will not suffice with one or two sentence replies. I'm not expecting novel-length replies or perfection though, so errors and such are fine (I make them constantly). Also, considering the themes (namely gore and horror) I, unfortunately, ask for all applicants to be over the age of 18 to avoid both myself and others feeling uncomfortable or limited to what can be shared and discussed.

  This is not first-come, first-served! This means roles cannot be reserved and multiple people can apply for the same role. It will be based on an application basis (not to discredit writers but to find a diverse and quality cast which I think will fit into the world and story).
  
  While there is an option to make your own role, I will take preference over the pre-made ones and only accept 1-3 of THE UNDECIDED roles. I want these characters to be just as flawed as the others so please get creative!
  
  If you are wondering why the roles are designed to add ”drama” between the other characters, this is to create a rocky foundation that when adding in the madness that unfolds, along with dehydration, sleep deprivation and starvation—our characters will be forced to test their relationships or be pitted against one another.
  
  You will notice that none of the roles are gender-specific and there are no restrictions in that regard! VIOLET HARRINGTON—
THE VANISHED.​

—THE BASICS.

NAME: Violet Harrington.
NICKNAME/S: Vi by friends, or Lola by her twin brother.
AGE: Twenty-two.
GENDER: Cis-female.
SEXUALITY: Pansexual.
OCCUPATION/STUDY: Bachelor of Studio Arts and freelance photographer and social media influencer/blogger.

—APPEARANCE.

A metamorphosis of sorts—Violet’s appearance had changed over the last year since remission. Gone is the tendency to bandanas and head wraps, with her naturally dark curls sprouting into a short-cropped style since her treatment ended.

Colour has been introduced back into her olive-brown complexion but signs of fatigue plague her skin; dark bags under her eyes and the missing signature glow in her complexion that her brother possesses. Attempts are made to hide these imperfections, with concealer and body blush. What does remain is the hungry curiosity her dark brown eyes hold, with sweeping eyelashes and framed with thick brows. Freckles lightly dot the centre of her face and are rarely covered with make up.

Injection scars litter her arms, fingers usually running along them as a reminder of what she endured to fight for a chance at life.

A once fragile frame, standing at 5’7”, now has the ability to maintain weight and has carefully been built upon due to a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Still lithe but it is no secret that her legs and arms are carved out with muscles.

A wardrobe that is only akin to an art major, with bold colours and handfuls of accessories but never lacking in utility and comfort. Her wardrobe is almost effortlessly applied but many aren’t aware of the meticulousness that goes into her outfits.

—PSYCHE & HISTORY.

Violet was always a sick kid. Perhaps it started when her brother smoothly left the womb with the doctor announcing—it’s a healthy baby boy! For Violet, it was a more difficult, life threatening process—one that the doctor informed her mother that Nathaniel had greedily taken most of her body’s nutrients and left nothing but scraps for Violet. To make it worse, Violet was born with a rare autoimmune disease that plagued her youth.

Violet became used to the phrase of how “resilient” she was, and frankly if one more voice added to the endless mass of how “resilient” she was—she’d lose it. She didn’t want to be resilient, she wanted to be free and do whatever she wanted without being shackled to the confines of her sickly body.

See, Violet felt she wasn’t naturally born an empathetic, nurturing and positive individual—she was forced to be one. Violet never needed to be strong for her own sake, it was for others. It was the way her parents looked at her with fear in their eyes, the way her twin brother felt the need to do “lighten” the mood to relieve his own anxieties or the way her friends always agreed with her to not upset her. It shaped her to become the embodiment of the perfect “sick child”. She started nurturing her family and friends to help them cope with her sickness. People preferred her this way, a positive force, one that wouldn’t allow her sickness to “get the best of her”. Behind closed doors she’d show a more vulnerable side but not to those around her. No one liked the child who pitied herself—it made them uncomfortable because there was nothing they could do to help her.

From a young age, it was evident she was a dreamer at heart who had plenty of time to engage in storytelling, the arts and philosophy while bound to a hospital bed or the chilling prison that became her bedroom. Violet craved novel experiences and learned to be creative considering her situation—seeking it through television shows, movies, books, stories from friends and family, drawing, painting and photography.

Violet became a confidant to many throughout her teen years and cultivated a group of friends that followed her throughout her eventual diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin Lymphoma. Violet would always push her friends to try new things, but also was there when they fell. It did comfort her in some way but she couldn’t deny the envy that bubbled under the surface.

Violet would hate to hear it but she is a fighter and one that persevered throughout her diagnosis and eventual treatment. When she turned eighteen, regardless of her survival, Violet was determined to shed the role she had become accustomed to.

THE BUTTERFLY.

Violet (against her parent’s wishes) followed her brother to NYU with a degree in studio art. A friend became a lover but Violet wasn’t aware of how much she changed throughout college.

Violet became impulsive, flighty and bordered on reckless with a warpath of wanting to push herself to new limits despite still undergoing chemotherapy. The urge to make up lost time was her only motivation. It started small—trips to local parks and cafes which she documented on social media.

It quickly picked up steam and soon enough she became absorbed in documenting her experience of being part of the world. Violet met people who went through similar experiences as her and was congratulated, if not encouraged, to “live life to the fullest”.

Violet’s eventual remission sped up the inevitable climb to travelling interstate. Friends and family could only watch as she pushed herself on her social media.

Violet became distant from most in her life over the last six months—especially those she viewed were marred from their experience of her being sick growing up. It didn’t help that she had found out about her partner’s infidelity with her supposed best friend.

Violet’s trip to Maine was going to be a fresh start but instead it seems it could be her demise.

THE RABID DOG.

Nathaniel had always felt an otherworldly bond towards his twin sister. He remembers standing at the hospital door when he couldn’t have been more than four years old. His mother was helping Violet pack her toys and clothes in a suitcase to finally come home with them. His father clasped his shoulder, looking onwards. Now remember son, you need to look after your sister. She’s…well…rather fragile. Like one of those dolls your grandma collects, yeah?

Nathaniel unfortunately took this too literally and his overprotectiveness become fierce throughout his childhood. He remembers pushing over anyone that touched Violet; or threatening to hurt someone who made her upset. His father basically encouraged this behaviour and to this day he still bears this responsibility in protecting Violet. This protectiveness and loyalty may be strongest with his twin but this can be applied to all friendships and relationships with others. One might argue it borders on possessiveness and is filled with unbridled, explosive anger that threatens to slip out when those are in perceived danger.

Nathaniel also had to bear the responsibility of being the one his parents poured all wasted potential and ambition from his two siblings into him. High expectations were set for him, especially with his father who was an ex-football professional player and current coach at NYU. This meant most of his childhood was spent on the field while his father barked plays at him.

Dedicated and steadfast, Nathaniel is a rabid dog with a bone. He won’t stop until he gets what he wants in all aspects of his life. Unfortunately his parents never taught him to be okay with losing and that anger can easily turn into outbursts. He remembers being coddled by his mother as a child when he didn’t get his way.

Nathaniel liked control and order. He almost insisted on it but hypocritically didn’t always apply to his own behaviour. He liked when things just made sense and fit in his world view and struggled when it didn’t. Perspective taking wasn’t a strength of his but he was like a sponge in absorbing new skills.

Nathaniel was an awkward child, he lacked his twin sister’s whit and charisma growing up. Thankfully for him he was able to observe and learn from watching others which proved effective as he reached his teens.

He wouldn’t admit it but he also went to his twin for advice and if he looked back he’d realise that a lot of their interactions were more about him than her. That isn’t to say he didn’t care about her, he absolutely adored his sister growing up, but he couldn’t deny the powerlessness he felt when he saw her in pain. Especially when all he could do was watch and make shitty jokes to try cheer her up.

THE IDOL.

Nathaniel grew into his body as he reached his teens, gangly limbs became hardened muscle from football practice and puberty. Girls started to take notice and dating became a revolving door affair.

Nathaniel’s practiced social skills also paid off and he found himself being surrounded by friends. He thankfully became better at managing his anger, or rather hiding it from others.

Hard work also paid off as he was offered a full-ride scholarship with football to NYU. He wasn’t particularly interested in business but his father chose it for him.

Nearing the end of college he had a core group of friends that he shared with his twin sister. However he noticed overtime, especially after her remission, she started to drift.

Not only that he became aware of his childhood best friend’s perceived betrayal of revealing his feelings for his twin sister. While Nathaniel framed it as him not being good enough for her and attempting to damage her relationship with her current partner—Nathaniel was more jealous that his best friend was choosing his feelings for his twin sister over their friendship. They were his friend.

Instead he could only ogle her social media. In fact he made it his business in checking her Instagram every morning and night. He was the one that pushed his parents to call the police that she was missing.

  As a dancer, Ainara is known to be ruthless and cold to those who don't know her. She hides her true side away from sight unless you are relatively close to her. She is collected and has earned the name 'Lady Ivory' due to her cool 'Ice Queen '-like personality. She is oftentimes level-headed and can keep her calm during extreme situations. She is cautious, wary, and extremely close-lipped when it comes to sharing her secrets. She also is tight-lipped on the type of dance she does and the fact she is actually a principle dancer for New York City Ballet.
  
  Once you get down to the nitty, gritty sides of her personality, you will find her to be highly intelligent and diplomatic. She is scarily intelligent, having an IQ of around 170. While she won't show it often, her diplomatic side tends to come out while she is dealing with issues and stressful situations. Her calm, collected demeanor is a bit off-putting to those who don't know her. Ainara has an elegant and regal bearing, and most have questions as to why she has that type of aura. Her empathy is average - giving her a touch of positivity.
  
  If you are one of her close friends, you will see the more thawed-out side of Ainara which is outgoing, kind, and compassionate. She tends to not show these in public. Many are trying to guess who the head is and she has been subjected to a car crash which screwed her leg up pretty badly to the point they thought she wouldn't ever dance again. She is not usually approachable, and her heavy Russian accent makes it hard to understand her speaking (especially English).   Art is a bit of an acquired taste to most who have met him. He has an overwhelming awkwardness to his person that makes any interaction uncomfortable unless you know him, and know not to take it personally.
  
  He is introverted to a detrimental degree. His only true friend is Nathaniel. Most of the people he’s met over the years of their friendship were those introduced through his more extroverted best friend. That’s not to say he’s never formed relationships of his own. Through his offbeat demeanor Art has attracted a handful of flings from his time spent at NYU, but his heart was never fully in them. His heart was always tied to Violet.
  
  Art is obsessive in his habits. He was introduced to smoking at NYU and became addicted to it quickly. He drinks far too much coffee than what’s good for him, spends hours delving into research projects for class with very little sleep.   Art isn’t sure when exactly he fell in love with Violet. Is always an answer? He knew from the moment the Harrington twins entered his class that fateful year that there was something special about them. Something special about Violet. She didn’t laugh and bully him for being smaller and weaker than the other kids. She didn’t turn her nose up when he wanted to talk about his less popular hobbies. She simply embraced him as is, wimpy little Archibald with an inhaler and thick rimmed glasses.
  
  It didn’t take long for Art to begin spending the majority of his time with the twins. With free thinking parents in academia who possessed little to no rules, Art’s house was a frequent hangout spot for him and Nathaniel. Despite the secret feelings Art began to harbor for Violet, they didn’t click the way he and Nathaniel did. They were twins, sure, but Violet had her own friends. Art was Nathaniel’s. It’s just how it was.
  
  Innocent admiration twisted into the sharp, shameful thorns of desire when puberty washed over the three. Art found himself thinking of Violet in a different way, one that he was terrified of Nathaniel discovering. They were best friends, sure, but the familiarity between them turned into the magnet that pushed Violet even further from his reach.
  
  So instead he pined from a distance, exerting feelings in a hidden journal full of prose, poetry and art. If Nathaniel ever came across the worn old thing, Art would be mortified.
  
  He attended NYU after high school for Literature, following in the footsteps of his academic parents and to remain close to Nathaniel and Violet to provide support while Violet battled her illness.
  
  Violet’s battle with lymphoma was a troubling time for Art. His feelings had never existed so far forward in his mouth, confession always a breath away from tumbling out in a frenzied prayer. He was terrified of losing Violet. He was terrified of losing Nathaniel. Besides, Violet had [THE LOVER]. Stuck to her side like some kind of parasite, Art had always been wary of [THE LOVER]. They didn’t appreciate Violet for who she was. Didn’t support her the way Art could. He had known her since they were children, watched her dreams grow and shape and change. Could [THE LOVER] say the same? Or was Violet just someone to pass the time?
  
  He thought his prayers were answered one night, when Art caught [THE LOVER] in a tangle of limbs with [THE FAITHFUL]. He was shocked, disgusted, delighted. Violet had just entered remission, and this is how the two decided to celebrate? He knew it. They didn’t love her the way he could. Art would’ve never done something like this.
  
  The damning secret turned into a glittering prize within Art’s palms. He ran to Violet after witnessing the event to inform her of the betrayal. It wasn’t long after this that she took off for Maine. In a way, a dark part of Art wonders if this was somehow his fault. Had he not told her, had the greedy desire for her love not overtaken him, would she still be in New York with them all? If she died at the hands of his selfishness, could he live with himself?
  
  During the period of Violet’s illness, Art’s grades suffered, leaving him a year behind the track of his graduation. When Violet disappeared, Art was in the middle of his final year at NYU and an internship at a publishing firm in the city. Despite the detriment a trip out to Maine would be for him, he dropped everything when word got out that Nathaniel was gathering a search party. They still hadn’t talked since the twin had found Art’s secret journal full of musings about Violet, but Art refused to stay away. This was bigger than all of them.   Cas’ appearance is almost always put together sloppily, sporting worn baggy clothes and a hodgepodge of uncoordinated jewelry. Often her hands are littered with cuts and scars as a result of her recklessness, or clumsiness—usually both. Shaggy brown curls frame her face, round blueish-grey eyes peeking out from underneath. There are a number of blemishes and acne scars on her face that she used to pick at compulsively. On any given day, Cas tries to mask the scents of weed and cigarettes with a strong, woody cologne, but her parents are anything but oblivious at this point.   Cas can be an overbearing personality; she’s loud and bold and never fails to make herself known. All her life she has made an effort to stand out, sometimes to her own detriment. She never hesitates to speak her mind, as a consequence she ends up involved in drama. It’s a bad habit she developed as a kid, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t stand up for the right things—Cas only takes things a little far.
  
  Ironically, Cas makes friends wherever she goes with the confidence necessary to spark up a conversation with anyone, charming her way into their lives.
  
  She always chased her ability to be free and independent, rebelling against any restrictions she doesn’t find fair. Cas rushed into adulthood when she was younger, learning to drive and finding ways to work as soon as she was old enough. She’s adamant about taking her own path, but she’s reached a place where she isn’t sure anymore how to envision her future. For now, she rides the waves, taking things slow, hoping life will simply bring the answer to her.
  
  Cas won’t face her future just yet, even if she’s accused of being unmotivated or lazy.
  
  Although it’s embarrassing to herself, her writing is all she has—and she hasn’t shown it to anyone. It’s more like journaling, though. Like a place to express herself fully; her friendships and often shallow and fleeting, Cas refusing to share the more thoughtful parts of herself.
  
  Cas is often jealous of who she admires or whoever gets more recognition than her, and it can make her a nasty and unlikable person. Since she was a kid her envy has gotten far more subtle, but it still affects her relationships in ways she ends up deeply regretting. It’s difficult to unlearn the desire to always compete for the top. Cas never had an opportunity to surpass her siblings, and she’s convinced she never will.

  As the Harrington twins’ adoptive sibling, Cas has always felt like an insignificant member of their family. Despite her efforts, she was never able to crawl out from under the shadow of the twins. As long as Violet was sick, she was constantly praised for her strength and resilience; she was a bubble of positivity that Cas could never be. Because her sister was coddled by her brother and pitied by their parents, Cas grew up with a deepening pit of jealousy in her gut. She envied everything about her sister—wishing she could be in her shoes for just a day—instead she could only watch by the sidelines.
  
  It was only a matter of time before Cas tried to emulate Violet, seeking just a smidge of the same attention from her parents. There were times she acted recklessly hoping she would break a bone or worse, only to end up with a minor sprain or a band-aid. Behind closed doors, her only means of garnering attention were childish tantrums. She got the results she wanted, briefly; it came as no surprise that she made herself generally disfavored among her siblings. Cas certainly wasn’t the golden child, unlike Nathanial, nor was she a ray of hope like Violet. Cas was the bratty, lousy, and rebellious sibling that eventually went quiet in the presence of the twins.   Young Cas staggered over empty liquor bottles and cigarette butts littering the apartment floor. She would find her mother’s face sickly and lifeless, melting into the rot that surrounded her.
  
  Cas watched her mother spiral downwards in ways she couldn’t yet understand. Her earliest memories were reduced to fuzzy, incoherent dreams that were blocked out to the point of uncertainty. Some of them were real, some were the result of whatever her child self misinterpreted wildly. What Cas does know is that she doesn’t think of her often.
  
  Being a long-time family friend of the Harringtons, the passing of her mother devastated them—especially the father of the twins. It wasn’t until Cas was being tossed around from home to home in foster care for a year that they were aware her mother had a child at all.
  
  While the Harrington twin’s mother was dedicating her life to care for Violet, their father spent fleeting moments with a teacher from NYU—and eventually Cas’ mother.
  
  Something in her changed drastically. Her self destruction escalated after the affair, winding up losing her career. It wasn’t long after that she cut contact, planted herself in a new city, ran away in hopes of a new persona. No one had heard from her in years. Not until her obituary.
  
  The possibility that Cas was a Harrington was an idea that floated around, unwelcome or not. It didn’t matter, really; the day Cas became a Harrington was the first time she knew what it really meant to be home. Finally she knew what it meant to be part of something.   Cas didn’t pursue an education at NYU like her siblings. It was easier to dwindle at home under the guise of being an aimless young adult than it was to face the inevitable question of her future. More accurately, where she belonged. Life had set her up for failure and then gave her another chance—but why?
  
  She watched Violet fight for her freedom, and now that she was in remission and feeling ready to take on the world, it was like that was all that ever mattered. It must’ve mattered more than Cas did. It was like she never existed at all.
  
  Soon Cas realized this was an opportunity to find a way out of the enormous shadow the twins cast onto her.
  
  But she never did. She never could. It was all too daunting. She was convinced she was destined to fail.
  
  Her resentment toward Violet grew as she left her family and friends behind in order to push herself to new limits. Was it the same envy that seethed inside her since they were kids? Cas wondered, why couldn’t she just be happy for her? Didn’t she deserve her newfound freedom more than anything else?
  
  With little to no direction in mind, Cas worked on her writings in private while she flipped cars to keep herself afloat. It was imperative she made something of herself. Even if she spent so much time running amok in the city and partying she rarely saw home.

  Layla's father said that by age six she had must have been won the record for most serious child, though no certificate ever arrived. This was not to say that Layla was cold or tense, rather that when she was focused on something the pin-point precision she used to carry out a conversation, task, what have you; the precision was tightly honed like a hand carved sphere of ice. This focus extended from her letter flash cards to the inner dramas of her dolls. As Layla aged this effort extended to her academics, friendships, romantic interests. Layla was always known for her meticulously planned itineraries for spring break and the packing checklists she had sent out months before prom, having already booked the hotel suite. While Layla was incredibly sweet and motivated by her duty and loyalty to others, she could be distant when tensions or emotions ran high. Sometimes this was perceived as flakiness but Layla was just generally uncomfortable with strong displays of emotion, often preferring to process her own moods in the calming isolation of her own room.
  
  Layla has a dry sense of humor and is quick-witted in conversation, she is incredibly ambitious and often her pride and perfectionism get in her way. Because Layla aims high, she agonizes over her decisions no matter how minute they may be. This can sometimes lead to inaction or Layla putting others before her in order to appease them. Layla is the first to volunteer for leadership positions and is often the martyr to her own inability to say no to things. Layla is incredibly sentimental but often not overly affectionate, it takes awhile for her to warm up to people but when she does she is very gracious with her time and advice. Layla is the pinnacle of work hard, play harder and has quite a mischievous, playful streak that can come out when she feels comfortable and secure.

• BACKGROUND

  
  

  Layla's mother never wanted a child, she felt that New York was a place where people went to find purpose, not a spouse and kids. Her mother had signed a lease on a brownstone before the nurses had even arrived to inform her about breastfeeding and swaddling. In some ways, because Layla was so young she did not really miss her mother, did not think about her or feel an absence in her life. Her mother had moved to Brooklyn, a world away to her from the familiar quiet streets of Morningside Heights, at least it was in her elitist Manhattanite brain. Layla's father always said that her mother was more than generous with her child support and contributed to Layla's college fund, she did not expect she could hope for much more. Layla always wondered how her father had managed so well after that, she had never felt anything other than joy and warmth in their apartment and her father kept busy throughout her childhood. Her father was a professor in the Environmental Science department at Columbia, he mainly taught the Master's students so there was a constant flow of young students babysitting Layla when she was too young to attend school. This did not last long however, as her father enrolled her in Montessori programs starting at the age of three. From there it was an endless wave of after-school activities, summer camps focused on enrichment, and trips to the Natural History Museum.
  
  When Layla was in middle school her father remarried and she was trepidatious at first but came to love her step-mother deeply. A year later they welcomed her younger brother into the world and two years after that a little sister. Layla loved being an older sibling and became the go-to babysitter and in some ways almost a second mom to her siblings. When Layla wasn't at home she would walk around Central Park with her friends and sneak into the bars near Washington Square Park. Layla incredibly studious though, always earning top marks and participating in every extra curricular she could jam into her week. When Layla was a senior in high school she started working in restaurants and slowly worked her way up to one of those classic New York restaurants where no one could get a table and all the food bloggers waxed poetic over the tasting menu season after season. That fall she carefully applied to a number of schools in the city but even with holidays and prom looming she was an absolute wreck during those first months of spring when everyone's college acceptances were coming in. Layla was overjoyed when she was accepted to Barnard, having been urged to apply by her step-mother, an alumni of the college. Her father and step-mother had sold the old apartment and had purchased a new one that would fit everyone more comfortably so Layla stayed with them but offered to help pay off the mortgage with the money she earned at her part-time job.
  
  In Layla's sophomore year she decided to audit some art classes at NYU in addition to her classes at Barnard in order to supplement her Art History courses. It was in the Art buildings and the park that Layla came to know Violet and [THE FAITHFUL], shared lunches and beers after class turned into a formal invitation for Layla to join the small friend group on their numerous outings in Greenwich Village. What started out as classic undergrad behavior at NYU parties and bars, quickly escalated as Violet seemed to push against the metaphorical cage of her illness. [THE FAITHFUL] and Layla learned quickly how to manage Violet on these nights out and get her back to the dorms in once piece. It was on one of these nights that she met Nathaniel. Initially Layla's appraisal of him was more logical and cold than the expected heat and passion, he was everything she should want in a boyfriend. Nathaniel was tall, handsome, talented and he cared so deeply for his sister that it touched Layla, reminding her of the fierceness she felt towards her own siblings. The relationship was decidedly on-again, off-again but it was not particularly dramatic, Nathaniel was very worried about his sister and Layla buried herself in her textbooks to avoid the uneasy worry that permeated her thoughts when she was focused on Violet. To make matters worse Layla increasingly became borderline catatonic in her panic surrounding exams, midterms and final papers.
  
  Senior year Layla and Nathaniel were decidedly off as Layla chose to spend the fall semester abroad. When she returned Violet was in remission and the dynamics of the group had markedly shifted. The spring semester was tense, dynamics within the group ready to implode over any number of conflicts. Layla found herself back in upper Manhattan more and more, focusing on her social group at Barnard and finishing up her thesis for defense. Layla still regularly hung out with people from the social group one on one, but she was withdrawn from Violet and Nathaniel. To make matters worse her mother reached out to reconnect which had briefly sent her over the edge. A 72 hour hold at Bellevue and a Prozac prescription had been the easy fix, figuring out how to handle the anger she was surprised to find bubbling up after all this time was a different story. It took some time and several expensive afternoon teas at The Plaza, but eventually Layla and her mother reconciled. Now that Layla had her mother in her life it was impossible not to see all the similarities, it made her heart ache for her father who must have seen his ex-wife in his daughter her whole life.
  
  It was beautiful a balmy out the day Layla graduated, they all met up back in Washington Square Park again; her friends in their purple robes and her in light blue traipsed all over lower Manhattan receiving free shots from older adults who most certainly were secretly sneering at them for their unbridled hope and dreams for the future.
  
  Now that it was all said and done and Layla's degree was doing nothing much besides collecting dust, she wished she had held Nathaniel closed to her that evening.
  
  When Violet went missing Layla called Nathaniel immediately, he picked up on the first ring. Layla did not ask if she could come with on the search for Violet, she simply told him she would meet him at his place when he decided to drive up.

  Oscar is a walking wet noodle. His body is thin and bony with slender fingers and long arms despite only being 5'9". His eyes and lips are slightly downturned, making his resting face appear sullen and concerned. He often gets told to 'cheer up' or 'smile' which really grates on him - he can't help that he looks sad and confused. His skin is a light olive hue but strong yellow undertones make him appear sun-kissed in the daylight and sickly in lower light environments, especially around his eyes where it is most pronounced. While not conventionally attractive, he makes an effort with his appearance and styling.
  
  If you've ever been to an art gallery, you might remember one abstract painting that made you turn your head like, huh? What's that doing here? How is that art? Or maybe you're the type of person who is enamored by such an out of the box creation. Oscar loves to dress like someone has thrown a ball of paint at a canvas and called it a day. Cow-print robes with steel cap work boots, bold-patterned sweaters and pink short. Plain black t-shirt and jeans (yes, he also owns basics and understands the practicality of dressing down for comfort). He also owns a large collection of hats, especially brimmed hats that protect his face from the sun. His fashion sense exists on a sliding scale from unhinged extravagance to starving-artist-chic, but the one consistent theme is his sense of experimentation.
  
  He changes his hair color about as often as he changes underwear, cycling through all the colors of the rainbow and back again. Strangely though, he's never had a knack for styling his hair and despite all the coloring, his natural, unkempt shape always remains, including that one strand on the top of his head that always seems to be bobbing around on its own like an antenna. Most recently his hair was a reddish-pink and once his dark brown roots began to grow in he dyed his hair orange which is the current look he is rocking. Not quite comparable to a natural ginger, but rather a carrot orange.

  For the longest time, Oscar has been riddled with doubt and insecurities, but more recently he has been overcome with a newfound sense of brash confidence. He is self-assured in his unique vision of the world. He no longer views himself as too weird to make friends but rather harnesses his creativity and naturally comedic wit to connect with others. He largely attributes his recent personal growth to his friendship with Violet which has resulted in him becoming very protective of her. Her encouragement of his unconventional thinking has bolstered somewhat of a healthy ego and belief in himself as a visionary. With her missing he's trying not to let himself unravel.
  
  When it comes to his work and his art, Oscar is extremely dedicated and works himself to the bone. Eating and sleeping are his last priorities when he is focused on an assignment or consumed by a design idea he is passionate about.
  
  His oddball energy may not be everyone's cup of tea, and interacting with him can be frustrating to people who aren't patient with his round-about way of explaining things. He doesn't always say what he means, and he doesn't always mean what he says but if you help him get to his point, then you may just have some of the most interesting and productive conversations of your life. 'I can't help that I think in shapes and colors' is a phrase you'll often hear him say to justify his scatterbrained behavior but really it's a healthy mixture of undiagnosed ADHD and autism that muddles his brain with fog and disorganized thoughts.
  
  Years of consuming competitive reality TV shows have instilled him with some grey moral values, and a strategic approach to navigating his relationships. This doesn't affect most of his friendships in overt ways as he's not outwardly malicious or vindictive in his machinations, he just has sneaky ways of playing human chess. He will withhold information until he feels its right to share what he knows and takes note of any sudden changes in people's attitude towards him. People underestimate how socially savvy he is because of his awkward demeanor, but there's a small part of Oscar that plays up the non-threatening, weak guy character. For example, if he needs a favor from someone, he may start being extra helpful, spending more time with you and showing more love than usual in the lead up to asking for said favor.     Oscar believes in Violet's talent and vice versa. Their friendship throughout college naturally blossomed through their shared love of art and painting. They draw creative inspiration from one another, even if Oscar is in his own lane, it always felt nice to know Violet had his back. When people didn't understand his vision or treated his art as a joke, it was Violet who would take him seriously. Constant harsh critiques and disapproval from his peers and academics may have driven him to quit his dream of interior design if it wasn't for Violet's constant inspiration and support.     Oscar does NOT like Nate. Sure, they get along fine, they've never had a falling out, or even spent any significant amount of time together one-on-one. But Nate would be stupid to not notice the iciness towards him radiating off Oscar. Is it just the magnetic force of two diametrically opposed personality types forcing themselves away from each other? Nate's desire for order does not gel with Oscar's compulsion to exist outside of the box. He sees Nate as a product of societal pressure to fit in - someone who has worked so hard to sculpt himself into a leader - into something manufactured.
