Before It All Began

Chase awoke to the sound of his father fumbling around the kitchen as he did every morning. For a second after he awoke Chase had forgotten where he was, almost as if he hadn't lived in Nowhere his entire life. The feelings quickly subsided and the same empty feeling he got when remembering his roots in nothingness returned once more. Chase climbed out of bed and made his way across the room to his phone to check the time. He got dressed, grabbed a juice pouch and headed out of the front door without uttering a single word to his father. Chase climbed in his old beat up jeep quickly and sped off to Flick's house.

A few minutes after leaving his own place Chase arrived at Flick's house. He text her he was there and waited for her to respond. Today was the same as any other mundane Monday morning. He'd pick Flick up, they'd drive to the clearing, smoke, then go to school higher than the towns sole water tower. Chase sighed in anticipation of another routine morning. He turned towards Flick's house and smiled as his friend walked out of the front door. Somehow in seeing her, he knew, today would be know ordinary day. He would make sure of it.

Marigold

"FUCKING FUCK!" Mari screamed into her pillow at 4am as the sound of a beer bottle smashing and an onslaught of cheering permeated her upstairs room. Why were her parents friends with these losers? They were meant to like boring things like watching the news and having a career, but instead they acted like the asshole 20-somethings that were currently making a mess in the house. Mari decided she'd go outside. She hastily put on some crumpled bike shorts, a sports bra and a tank top and hightailed it outside her bedroom window, climbing down the conveniently placed old Sycamore Tree. A morning run was the only way to clear her head. She could push herself hard enough that she didn't have to think about anything other than the pain in her thighs.

Mari ran out her front yard, passing by Henry's place and jogging out into the streets. By the time she got back to her place the sun would be up and most of the dickheads would be asleep, so she entered her living room "Mum. Is there breakfast" Her mother stirred but said nothing "HEY MUM" She yelled louder and somebody chucked a beer can at her head and told her to shut up. Rolling her eyes she opened the fridge and pulled out some orange juice and baked beans and made them with toast. Afterwards she hopped in the shower and bummed around until it was time to walk to school.

She shot henry a text that read:
"You wanna walk to school"

And dawdled outside his house until she got a text back. Good chance he didn't get to sleep that night either given the party that went on for much longer than usual.

Tyler woke up to his father's alarm at 5 am. His dad still worked a steady job in the town, though he only kept it because of the hard time everyone knew that he had had and some unpaid 'vacation' as they thought about if they would let him go. Tyler rolled out of bed and stretched out his body. Several cracks sounded through the air and he let out a sigh of relief. Tyler grabbed the first things he saw in his closet which happened to be a black shirt and gray pants. For some reason, over the last few day he had been wearing combos of black and grey more often. Although, his wardrobe wasn't as colorful as it had been long ago. Tyler plugged his phone into the portable speaker he put in his bathroom and played the music at a low volume. He showered through three songs before stepping out and toweling off. Tyler threw on his outfit for the day along with some gray converse. He exited his room and made his way downstairs where he saw his dad putting on his shoes.

"I uh- I made some bacon and eggs." His dad said looking up. "Thought you could have that for breakfast.. I mean, if you want."

Tyler smiled to ease his father's nerves and moved into the kitchen. "Sounds great."

His father looked at him for a moment, still unsure. Then smiled a genuine, sincere smile. "O-okay. So! Have a good day at school!"

Tyler smiled at his father's back, but internally was conflicted. He and his father had reconnected some time ago. But, it was like his dad was still walking on eggshells around him. Tyler felt bad for not recognizing the pain his distance was causing his father, who now had no idea what to do with himself. Recently, his father had started being a bit more attentive and getting into a groove of sorts. He would wake up early and make a pot of coffee with enough for both of them and offer Tyler a cup when he came down. Apparently, that initiative had turned into coffee and breakfast as Tyler spotted a cup of sitting by the machine. He ate a quick breakfast and sipped his coffee as he looked out the window. His relatively quiet morning was broken by the sound of a jeep coming up the street. It was a jeep that had become familiar to him with time as the occupant had been for years. Chase McCorter. Someone who was once a dear friend to Tyler in his youth. The jeep pulled in front of the house next door and Tyler looked towards it. The house of Felicity Corben though he had weened that she had picked up the nickname "Flick."

Once upon a time, Tyler had been good friends with Chase and Flick. Back then, they were quite the trio.. Tyler thought about the memories he had with them from his childhood and, for a second, enjoyed it. With a smile on his face, he silently sent a thank you to the two teenagers. For the time they had spent together, Tyler's childhood had been good. Sure, they were now estranged. But, it was appreciated nonetheless. Tyler walked away from the window and threw his black hoodie on. Then, he swooped down and gathered up his bag before stepping into the cool, morning air. Tyler checked to see that he had his key and locked the door behind him. With his morning started, he walked down the sidewalk towards school.

Her phone's loud ringtone and the evident sound of Chase's jeep outside was enough to jolt Flick up from her desk, wide awake. It was still 5 am, just two hours after Flick closed her eyes, but that didn't stop her from bolting up from her seat and fixing up a few things. Her desk was riddled with all sorts of things from nuts and bolts to twigs and leaves--all needed for a small school project that she was sure she didn't finish. Crap. She'd have to bring it along to their trip to the clearing.

Gimme 3 mins. Sorry. Just woke up. She texted to Chase before tossing her phone to the barely-used bed and heading for the bathroom. A quick shower and change of clothes later, Flick was out of her house with a piece of sliced bread in her hands, careful not to wake her siblings and worse--the stepmother. Her dad was probably at the police station by now, so she basically had free reign.

"Really sorry...and thanks. Let's just say your jeep and text message were my alarm clocks for today. " She shoots a lopsided smile at her childhood best friend, "And mind if I bring this science-atom thingimajig along? Mrs. Ryder's gonna kill anyone who doesn't turn this in."

Just across her house, Flick spots a familiar face on the window--Tyler Black. The guy had been part of their former trio, once, but now they barely talk to each other aside from simple hello's and hi's. Flick gives him a wave, not really sure if he would see it or not, before turning back to Chase.

"Alright, let's head off, then?"

Abe's morning schedule wasn't the best she had to admit, although, it did vary from time to time.
The first time she woke up was around 4 a.m. Looking at her clock, then her bed... Then her clock..... Then back at her bed, she layed her head on her pillow, sighing a quiet "oh well", and then fell asleep again.

The second time, Abe woke up to the sound of a male radio host talking about some recent sports events, she never paid attention to what they say, but waking up to people talking rather than a blaring fire alarm was better in her opinion. She looked at the radio to check the time, 5 a.m. Promptly turning her alarm off, Abe slowly crawled out of her bed and grabbed some clean-ish clothes from her laundry hamper. From the pile, she picked a red oversized sweater and gray leggings. After finding all of the things she need for the day, she tossed them in her school bag and went to her bathroom to freshen up, dropping the bag off at the door for later convenience. Combing her fingers through her hair, and grabbing her backpack, she headed downstairs for food.

"Good Morning~" Her mom sang as she entered the kitchen, after mumbling a "Finally" under her breath.

She chimed a "Good Morning" back, but with less enthusiasm and more of a i'd rather be asleep tone.

Abe and her mom discussed plans for the day and dreams they had before her mom packed up and headed to work. Not before long, Abe finished up her breakfast which consisted of a half-assed PB&J and headed out to her car.

Henry

The blackbirds which nested a few feet from his window began to stir as the sun rose over the distant hills. Yawning, Henry continued to idly draw lines on his notepad, drumming his fingers as he observed the start he had made. A small sketch of a human brain, with several labels and a few incomplete paragraphs below annotating the diagram. Henry sighed, turning his head to look out the window - viewing the aftermath of the 'party' in the house adjacent to his. It had seemed to have died down since the thumping of a bass last night, so he shook his head and proceeded out of his room.

His house was of a moderate size, with a linear hallway stretching the walls of the house and linking the rooms. To his left, his grandmother's bedroom and a dark pantry, no longer in use, to his right - the bathroom and the stairwell. While it did feel a bit too spacious for two people, he enjoyed the area. Sluggishly, he proceeded down the worn mushroom-coloured carpet and closed the lavatory door behind him. Henry looked up at the mirror, seeing a sleep-deprived, dirty teen and splashing cool water from the faucet on his face. Taking a swig of mouthwash from the cabinet above the sink, he undressed and stepped into the shower - thinking profoundly about his essay on the cerebral cortex, and what socially acceptable behavhiour is related to activity in the frontal lobe.

Four fifty five.

It was the time he caught a glimpse of on the worn old wooden clock downstairs as he passed the landing, drying off with a towel as he walked into his bedroom, and directly to the closet. Sorted in a simple colour order, he looked around and picked out a beige tee, pulling it over his head and pulling up a pair of khakis to match the mood he was in.

Today is going to be a productive day, Henry. Keep it together.

He looked at himself in the mirror, opting for a polo shirt instead after thinking twice. He grabbed his bag, slung it over his shoulder and slid downstairs. The clock read five o'clock, so he fumbled around the cupboard and grabbed a half eaten granola bar, shouting a goodbye to his grandmother and walking out the door, just after he snatched up his textbooks and phone. It smelled fresher than usual this morning, and was quite clear. He admired that his lawn was still a slather of mud from the sprinklers, and drew his phone after a tone rang out. The lock screen read:

'You wanna walk to school'

It was a message from Marigold, though after recent persisting he had changed her display name to Mari. Rolling his eyes, he texted back, the keys clicking as he strolled over the tarmac a few yards to stand in front of her home.

'sure, infront of your house rn, sorry i'm late'

He sighed, looking to the door.

Marigold

Running a nervous hand through her bushy black hair. Mari made her way over to her neighbor. She liked Henry, and she felt awful about how her family was probably effecting him "Hey." She said, with a very fake looking smile that almost seemed more like a grimace. "Uh..." She broke eye contact for a moment "I'm really sorry... about the party. If I try to stop it usually I just get something thrown at my head by some loser" She said letting out a weak laugh even though she didn't really find it that funny. She began walking expecting that he'd fall into pace beside her.

man my legs hurt, maybe I overdid it.

She wanted to limp to take the pressure or her right leg which she suspected she had injured one of the muscles in but she couldn't let Henry see so instead she just tried to keep the winces of her face as she walked normally. It was a pretty short walk to school but she appreciated not having to do it alone. She just wasn't overly good at showing it or anything. "Ah... I forgot the English homework" She suddenly realized out loud. It had just been so loud last night that all she could do was blast music in her ears and eventually fall asleep It was the second time this week. Henry was in a different English class from her otherwise she'd see if he could help her speed do it in first break. She was gonna have to do her best.

Chase McCorter
Chase had noticed Tyler in the window just as Flick had, and when she got in, it had his attention. He could still vividly remember running around frantically through the waves of summer heat, attempting to dodge a pipe weilding Tyler when the three would play Kinghts and Dragons. He smiled to himself at the resurfacing of such memories then turned to Flick, "Yea, lets... lets get going I guess." He put the car into drive and the two drove off.

About two miles down the winding road Chase suddenly stopped the car and then turned to his friend. "Hey, remember that Tyler guy we used to hang out with?" He looked in his rear view mirror as if looking back to his memories with Tyler. "Ever since that accident happened, he's been kinda... recluse. From like... everyone," Chase pointed out. "Could it be... Our fault? Think we did enough for him?"

Flick

Flick almost didn't hear the jeep come to a stop until she saw that the road wasn't a neverending blur anymore. Why did they stop? She was about to ask Chase when he began to talk about Tyler, about how he had been avoiding people, and how they might be a reason. "Could it be...our fault? Think we did enough for him?"

"I...uh..."

For a moment Flick hesitated to answer, one arm leaning by the window while her head rested on the palm of her hand. The question repeated herself in her head: Was it their fault? Was it her fault?

"I honestly don't know, Chase. It...it was his decision to..."

She trailed off. It was his decision to distance himself, she wanted to say, but Flick knew that might as well be a lie. Tyler's decision to be reclusive might as well be just as heavy as her choosing to be not there for him when the accident happened, just because she had an 'important' school project to do. But that was six years ago, and Flick hated her eleven-year old self. God, she regretted ever being such an overachiever. If she wanted anything for Tyler right now, then it was to apologize for not being a friend when he was lying on the hospital bed.

What had once been a long pause turned into a sigh. "Maybe...maybe it is our fault. Maybe it isn't. I don't know, Chase." she answered, eyes looking straight at the road. "What I do know is that...maybe we didn't do enough. Were you there while he was in the hospital? Did you visit him? Because I didn't."
