The Truth Behind The Marriage

"Hell no," a young woman spoke with anger in her voice.

"We're not asking you, dear. You will do this for us. Otherwise, you can say goodbye to your career before it begins."

"You wouldn't...."

"We're doing it because we love you. It's what's best for the company, for the family and for you."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alice Conell couldn't help but groan and sigh for the tenth time that day. This couldn't be right. It shouldn't be right. The young, pink haired woman respected and loved her parents but they had finally crossed the line. And yet, there was nothing the young woman could do about her new faith. At least, if she ever hoped to display her art or teach anywhere in the country. It didn't seem possible but her parents had immense power and influence. Although she guessed that's what happened when they owned one of the most important and influential technology development companies in the world. It almost seemed cruel to use their power like this but her parents kept reassuring her that it was for the good of the family. Why it was so essential Alice got married instead of signing a document, the girl did not understand.

From what she had been told, Conell Industries was working to make some sort of deal with a rival company. Alice believed the deal would result in a merger between the two companies and, as a result, the two families. At least, that had been the argument her parents had used when they explained why a marriage between herself and the rival owner's son was necessary. The young woman still had her suspicions about the whole arrangement and did not know as much as she wished she did. All the young artist knew was her future career would not exist if she did not do this.

And so, Alice tried to her best to accept her fate as she waited for her....fiance at the most expensive restaurant in town. Leave it to her parents to set up a date in a ridiculous place. Plus, this place made it even more embarrassing when her 'date' did not seem to arrive. It had been at least 25 minutes since they were supposed to arrive. Her only consolation was that the restaurant had been told to put the couple in a private area so they could chat in peace.

"I swear, five more minutes and I leave...."

It was a gloomy night in the city, if it weren't for the pretty coloured lights that seemed to dance in the rain it wouldn't be appealing in the slightest. Max actually quite liked the city when it rained, unlike most people he would bare it without an umbrella. The cold water droplets on his face was a relief from the typical smoggy air that felt so thick and hot. But tonight, he wasn't out walking on the damp streets, instead he was sitting in the back of his vehicle outside one of the swankiest restaurants in the city.

"We've arrived Master," the driver's voice was calm as he peered in the rearview mirror at Max. The dark haired man didn't move one inch, which caused his mentor to sigh. "I trusted that you wouldn't break this engagement Maxwell..." the words stung with every ounce of disappointment.

"Yeah... yeah..." Max was busy looking out the window up at the tall building before him, "Doesn't mean she can't sweat a little..." his slender finger pushes down on the button that rolls down the window, without hesitation he lights up a cigarette.

"I thought you quit that too..." the driver was becoming more impatient with his young master, but this was nothing new.

"Well Francis, you can't please everybody... can you?" Max grinned through a puff of smoke that left his lips. He knew there were many eyes on him, and Francis was just the pair he was aware of. The man was like a handler of sorts, making sure Max didn't go too far astray and kept his Father (the companies) best interests at heart. It was imperative that his mentor ensure that Maxwell arrived at this destination tonight, and that he made his best impression on behalf of his family.

"Please, do not waste all the effort I have put in and risk this partnership for the family this evening, sir..." Francis adjusted his jacket as well as his gaze which now was a firm one. Max merely nods in acknowledgement. As much as he'd like to botch the entire evening he was sure it would jeopardize his rank in the family business. The rampant male would much rather be left to his own devices than cater to a young woman at this point in his life but it wasn't in his power to decide that.

This woman: Alice Conell, was going to be a great asset to his Father's business relationships, and what a pity the poor girl had no idea her own parents were just as crooked as the rest of them. Of course he couldn't be the one to let on that her poor mother and daddy were doing under the table deals with criminals... so, he had to put on the rich boy who's got nothing better to do act. It was tiring pretending to be so well put together, when really he was part of the muscle in acquiring special goods and packages.

"I think you've made her wait long enough sir." Francis was growing tired of his usual antics. Max decides to finally concede and opens the door of the luxurious vehicle and lets his last bit of cigarette drop to the wet pavement.

"Don't wait up Francis!" Max offered him a cheeky wink which wasn't received well before proceeding into the high end restaurant.

Max was greeted quite graciously as his face and name was known all throughout the city and before he knew it his coat was taken and he was being escorted to the private room where he would have dinner. The mischievous thug was sure that this girl was about to leave any second at this point he was over twenty minutes late.

"Mr. Larson has arrived," the waiter announced. This place sure was fancy-- Max wasn't used to hearing his name when he entered a room.

He was a little surprised at the look of the girl sitting at the table before him, she was prettier than he imagined her being... that was the worst scenario that crossed his mind. Max doesn't waste anytime and sits down across from Alice and quickly looks at the menu provided to him and orders a scotch and a house wine for his date. It wasn't his style to ask or learn about his fake partner.

Silently he looks over at her, it was peculiar that she had pink hair, and the girl certainly looked like she had never stepped foot in a restaurant as fancy as this before. "Did you wait long?" He asks curiously wondering if she was about to snap already.

Alice was halfway done with her first glass of wine by the time she had decided to give him 5 more minutes. To be honest, the young artist didn't favor alcohol all the much. However, its relaxing properties seemed to prove useful at times like these. It seemed to calm her nerves and anger ever so slightly. Although it did make Alice mad and annoyed that she had to dress up to be potentially stood up. The woman liked dresses. Just not incredibly uncomfortable ones like her present attire. The dress was a black, slightly waist fitting piece with black lace at the top that surrounded her shoulders. It was beautiful, of that there was no doubt. Nonetheless, it seemed like Alice had done this for nothing.

As the young woman stared at the drink in her hand, Alice couldn't help but rethink her decision. Was her 'hobby', as her parent's called it, worth it? Couldn't she do something else? Something that had a future and was needed in today's crazy world? The answer came simply and quickly to Alice. No, she couldn't. Art was her passion. Education was her purpose. The year that Alice had spent giving lessons to young students had been the most productive and happies year of her undergraduate career. It didn't matter if she couldn't make a lot of money or if she would have trouble getting a job. Alice couldn't pretend to be someone she wasn't.

More than anything, Alice guessed the worse part would be her 'fiance'. If he was anything like her parents, the young woman could already hear him belittling her and her career choice. All she could do was hope he wouldn't be so insensitive. Even if he was though, Alice was determined to show him otherwise. One day, Alice would have her paintings hanging on museum walls. Something she had promised herself long ago.

At that moment, her thoughts were interrupted by the waiter's voice. When Alice turned her gaze, someone else was standing next to the waiter. That person, she guessed, was her fiance. Maxwell Larson, if she recalled correctly.

Before she could say anything, Maxwell had sat down and ordered more wine for Alice. The waiter quickly left, leaving her no room to decline the wine that had been ordered. She guessed it was alright though. The more wine the better. After all, she had to endure a conversation with someone that had showned up 30 minutes late to their 'date'.

"I did. May I know why?"

The young woman asked calmly. The last thing she wanted was to make a scene here or to get angry. Alice had agreed out of her own accord to marry the man in front of her. She wasn't here to blame anyone else.

Max raised an eyebrow at the girl across the table from him. Sassy... he liked that! It would have been dreadfully boring if she was just happy to be his arm candy. In an attempt to annoy her just that little bit more he pauses savouring the alcohol in his mouth before swallowing slowly, the silence most likely would drive her crazy.

When he opens his mouth again every last word is a lie, "Unfortunately, it's the price I pay as such a successful business man..." he takes another slow sip of his stiff drink, "It's extremely hard for me to keep any engagement in my appointment book-- surely you understand with your parents being entrepreneurs themselves?" Max wouldn't be surprised if Alice was used to losing out on personal time with her parents due to demands of the business just like he had. He could also be wrong, maybe she was a spoiled brat who used that emotional pain to get whatever she desired. His dark eyes narrowed as he tried to size up the woman in front of him, was she respectable? He couldn't be quite sure yet.

It wasn't long before the waiter was back to take their order, again Max draws out every moment he can in the most annoying way. He knew right away what he was going to order but instead he pretends like he can't decide and finally lands on the most expensive dish on the menu. His interest is peaked now to see what his new Fiance might order... it could say a lot about a person and he was curious to know if she had expensive taste.

To be honest, Alice was afraid she wouldn't be able to stand the man in front of her. It seemed like he was purposely making her wait for his answer. If he would even answer her honestly, she did not know. Alice knew nothing about the man in front of her aside from his status. The young artist did not want to stereotype the man she would marry but her fears seemed to be coming true. He seemed to be the proud and self centered man she thought he would be. This would surely be a long, long night. All Alice could do was hope for the best.

But that seemed to be hard when Maxwell gave her an answer she was so used to hearing. Of course her parents had done the same thing over and over again. Which was probably why Alice hated being late herself. "Of course, but 30 minutes late seems excessive, don't you think?" Alice asked, still as calm as before. Nonetheless, she wasn't here to be disrespected. Not to mention Alice had not heard an apology yet. The woman didn't think she was asking too much of him. It was simple manners to apologize to someone after being half an hour late to a previous arrangement.

Once the waiter came to take their order, Alice couldn't help but notice the way Maxwell was acting. If he was doing this on purpose, then Alice couldn't help but think her fiance was being childish. There was no point in being rude to each other. They seemed to be getting married either way. Might as well try to make the best of this ridiculous situation. Meanwhile, Alice knew exactly what she wanted to eat. After all, she had quite a long time to figure it out. To be honest, Alice wasn't too picky when it came to most things. When Maxwell was finally done, Alice asked for a pasta dish. The girl actually enjoyed Italian food quite a lot.

Max let out a small chuckle before he takes another long sip of his scotch. It was apparent that this girl no matter how small and innocent she seemed would have no problem voicing her opinion. "Surely I would have called and notified you if I had been in contact with you before this point..." he eyes her curiously, it was as if she had expectations of him already and Max hadn't planned on living up to any of them. After a comment like that he had expected her to order the most expensive thing on the menu but instead Alice had been rather modest which was unexpected to say the least.

"Did your parents not warn you of my responsibilities? My attention will at most times be short and far and in between, my career is quite demanding." Max leans back in his seat his gaze still fixed on Alice, what had she expected out of this whole thing? Arranged marriages were never happy ones.

Alice really had no choice but to try and believe him. This marriage wasn't going to be easy for several reasons. All the woman wanted was to make the best of this uncommon and almost forceful situation. Surely, the man in front of her had no desire to marry the struggling artist and simple teacher that Alice was. After all, he seemed far too busy for such a commitment. Then again, they could simply live their marriage like they weren't even a couple. However, Alice had to be honest and admit she wanted more out of this arrangement. To live her life with someone she couldn't even get along with was going to be extremely difficult. If they could grow to become friends then that would be enough for her. "If you say so..." Alice said, taking another sip of her wine glass.

"My parents did not share much information. To be honest, I found out about this engagement today. I haven't been home since recently and my parents seemed to wait until the last minute to share the news with me, " Alice admitted. It irritated her the tactics her parents used to corner her into agreeing with the engagement but there was nothing Alice could do. At this point, all she wanted was to continue her studies, start working and fulfill her passions for art. If she could find friendship in this new lifestyle of hers then Alice would be even happier.

"If I may ask, why did you agree to this?"

Alice really wanted to know why. Was he forced into this the way she had been or did he legitimately wanted to marry a stranger?

The woman before him didn't seemed convinced by him at all, which in fairness she was perfectly right to think that way. Her next statement makes the young business man catch some alcohol at the back of his throat causing him to cough. She found out only today? Although, based on her attitude I would be afraid to give her news like that too. Max does his best to compose himself, this had been the first clumsy thing he had done all night and he didn't like showing that side of him much. Still, it was kind of odd of her parents to share such a big piece of information so late in the game so really he couldn't blame her for being irritated that he showed up late-- maybe... just maybe he felt a tiny bit bad about making her wait.

Max's gaze was now on the dinner table, his stomach was about to growl from hunger and he was doing everything in his power to stop it. It was then he hears an unexpected question. "What do I have to lose?" Max shrugs his gaze traveling back to the pink haired woman again. "I've never believed in love... so if it benefits the company then why not."

This was Max's brave act talking. His Father didn't exactly give him room to say no, and by the way it sounded if he wanted a stake in the company then he'd better agree to this marriage. Truth be told Max never thought he'd find anyone anyway, he was happy with little trysts here or there... but his lifestyle wasn't suited for a woman by his side always.

"Why did you give in... by the sounds of it you don't want to be here anymore than I." Max exhales it felt good to get that off his chest, maybe she'd lighten up a bit.

Alice couldn't help but look slightly amused when Maxwell seemed surprised at her confession. Although she didn't blame him. The young woman had reacted the safe when her parents told her. She had to give them credit though. Had they asked this of her while she was away from home, then Alice might have never come back. Of course, father and mother knew this. Despite rarely being there during her childhood, Alice's parents payed attention to her in the rare moments they weren't glued to their phones or computers. It was fine though. Alice had been raised in such a manner from early childhood and had gotten used to being on her own quickly.

To be honest, Alice was slightly surprised to hear his response. She hadn't expected him to actively seek a partner or a romantic relationship but to not believe in love was completely different. Sure, Alice wasn't the type of person that needed a significant other by her side but she wasn't completely closed to the idea either. Maybe Maxwell really was too busy for anything other than business. If that was the case then Alice could see why the marriage appealed to him. It would be an 'easy' way to please society, the business world and his parent's company.

"Well, my parents didn't really leave me much choice," Alice admitted. The young woman was not sure if she wanted to get into the details of such a decision but she wasn't here to lie to him. If he were to ask, then Alice wouldn't make up some ridiculous story to try and impress him.

Her profession and career path was highly ridiculed and looked down upon by her parents as well as the business world. In the circle of powerful families, most young women and men followed in their parent's footsteps. Her own had tried to convince her of that same ideal mentality but Alice couldn't live a happy life that way. She had tried to work in the business but quickly realized she wasn't made for such work. After long and tedious fights, her parents finally gave up and forced her to study. At least, to study something she actually enjoyed.

Max had expected a story... anything, but instead he got exactly what he would have said back to her. What gave? It wasn't like his impression of her could get any worse-- could it? Before he could respond their food arrived which pleased him and his aching stomach. Seeing the portion size he was starting to wish he didn't order the highest priced dish as always it was rich on ingredient but skimpy with the amount of it. With a look of disappointment on his face he began to eat.

Max didn't always carry the best manners so he talks while he eats, not pausing to chew in silence. "C'mon..." he swallows some of his food, "there's always the choice to say no..." he takes a gulp of his scotch. "It's just about what you're willing to give up to make that choice." His eyes get dark, what did this girl want so bad that it was worth giving up her future with a man she loved. "You look like the type that believes in love and rainbows and all that crap... what could they possibly hold over your head?" sure he was being bold and presumptuous but that's how he's always been. This was mainly due to the fact that he couldn't get close to anyone in his life so he didn't pick up on the social cues.

As their food arrived, Alice had been finishing her first glass of wine. The waiter, seeing this, poured her more wine and placed her plate in front of her. The pasta dish, unlike Maxwell's, was reasonably portioned. Before she could start eating her own, Alice couldn't help but notice the look of disappointment in her fiance's face. Although she did not know why that look was there, Alice couldn't ignore it. Regardless of her feelings towards this engagement, the young artist wasn't cold hearted. "If you want, you can have some of my pasta," Alice offered with a small smile.

Which minimized even more as he started to talk with his mouth full? Did he do that during business dinners too? Alice highly doubted that was the case. Before she could say anything, Alice was asked the question she did not want to answer. What did her parents had on her? Everything. Everything she hoped to be and accomplish. And although there wasn't much she could do about her situation, Alice still didn't want to tell him. Especially after he expressed what type of person he thought Alice was. Did it really seem that way? Sure, Alice was sweet and considerate with friends but at this point the young artist wasn't sure what category Maxwell fit in. Regardless, Alice wasn't going to lie to him. They were still getting married, after all.

"Before I tell you, I would appreciate it if you could chew with your mouth closed," Alice asked of him. Of course, she did not sound rude whatsoever. It just wasn't very proper to make such noises when he was eating with someone else. Plus, if he gave that courtesy to his business partners but not to her then Alice couldn't helped but be bothered.

"To be honest, everything. I just came back from college and barely starting my teaching and art career. If I didn't agree to this marriage, then my career would end before it can begin. Father and mother aren't really scared to use their influence."

And so, Alice waited to see his reaction to the mention of her future career. Hopefully, the reaction would not be a rude one. As she waited, Alice finally started to eat her food.

Max was baffled-- was this girl for real? She not only just offered up her own food... but she was a honest little art teacher?! Why couldn't his parents have set him up with a somewhat attractive girl who only cared about money? I'd be much easier to feel like he deserved that instead of someone like Alice. Max felt like he didn't deserve a good person like her, he was selfish and could only complicate her life more. Good thing for him he was good at leading a double life so far, but now he'd just have to work all that more hard to keep her out of it. But hopefully he could be disagreeable enough that she'd just get out of it her own way, he knew it would have to be their side to break and not his or his Father would have his head.

Max had stopped eating all this while he had been in his head thinking about how terrible of a person he was compared to the pink haired girl across from him. He remedies the bit of guilt he has by washing it down with the remainder of his drink and it takes awhile for him to respond. "Well I guess we'll just have to stay out of each-others way..." he bites his lip thinking of their future and if this could work, and everything inside him wanted her to just take off... but maybe if she lived with him she'd really get the picture. "Of course you'll be expected to be at any public affairs at my side, but beyond that your time is your own and I'm not going to tell you what you can do with it." Max waves down the waiter who takes away his empty plate and he orders another drink, he could seriously go for another cigarette about now.

Alice continued to eat as Max finished his drink and took a few seconds to answer her. As she waited for his comment, Alice was preparing herself for the change of tone in his voice. For the look of disgust in his face. After all, anything but an extremely successful and prosperous career would be unacceptable and looked down upon by someone of his stature. Due to this thought, Alice couldn't help but look surprised when Maxwell made no comment on her situation. Maybe he wasn't the arrogant, selfish man she thought him to be and maybe this relationship could really turn into a real friendship.

The young woman kept eating as Maxwell started talking, looking a little more relaxed than when she had arrived. Sure, Maxwell wasn't the most polite man in the world but he wasn't what the young woman expected. And after realizing this, the idea of keeping away from each other didn't really make sense anymore. "Not necessarily. I don't see why we can't form a friendship out of this situation. Especially if we are to act as a couple for public appearances," Alice told him. By now, it was plainly obvious that Alice was quite honest with most people. After taking another drink of her wine, Alice looked at Maxwell again. This time, however, with a small smile. The change in her expression seemed to serve as a 'preview' of how gentle and caring Alice could be. "I know this is a peculiar situation but I hope we can make the best of it. After all, the choice was technically ours. Even if they didn't give us many options," Alice told him with a small giggle.
