Futuristic The Surface

SweaterJane

I am okay with being okay.
It's been 2oo years since we've seen the surface.

After WW3, our planet's surface had been ruined. Radiation pressed too much danger to continue living there, so, under the ocean, another world had been built for the safety of man kind. Finally, volunteers have been sent to the surface, brought to land and are surviving to make sure it is liveable.

It was a nice day. Sun was out, beaming down on the green land as the mountain breeze lick the sweat away from the back of Julia and Alex's necks as they work to make the last preparations for the volunteers. Alex stack wood on the side of the main door, Jules clean out the old red Ford truck. "I heard the first set of volunteers is supposed to be small...", she called out to the tall, nearly brooding man as he work. "I heard it was only supposed to be one or two, just in case the sub doesn't work. They don't wanna lose everyone if something goes wrong with it last moment. ".

Alex huffed, " Yeah, I think it's just one. You could probably take the truck--" Julia cut him off.

"Her name is Baby," she said with a distant smirk, "I named her Baby.". Her soft hand ran across the rusted hood. It was a wonder the old thing worked, but Jules worked herself to the bone to get it up and running. It was her prized possession.

"..Baby.." He chuckled, shaking his head. " Well take baby down to the beach, take the poor son of a guns they're sending up home... if you can call this place home. ". Alex tossed his friend a cannister of water and walked over, hugging her tightly around the shoulders and patting her back before he retreated indoors. A hug was the norm here before anyone strayed too far. You never knew who was coming back, or if anyone was coming back.

Julia left, driving the truck down the rugged trail herself and Alex cleaned out a few days ago. It lead to the water where they could fish for food and retrieve the occasional care package and now, volunteers. She parked Baby and leaned against it's side, lighting up a cigarette then began to wait for the poor souls who'd volunteered to the surface.
