Just warming up
The Solemn City Underlined.png

Foreword.png

This journey is yours to take.

The decisions from here on out mean life or death, but it's not only your life that matters but those you've decided to befriend, to love, or to hate.

The forest you live in is full of beauty and peril. One misstep and death could befall you. Looking beyond the lush greenery are monsters more bold, bloodthirsty, and daring than you could ever be.

"Don't venture out in the dark."
Papa's words always ring in each of your minds. His warnings have been heeded for as long as you've lived in the Burrow, but he's gone.

Burrow Cropped.jpg

The forest is dense. The trees loom beyond what the eye can see. The noises are as enchanting as they are haunting.

Beasts lurk nearby. Beasts lurk far off.

This is just the beginning

ActionStirring the Burrow
And so it awoke, the machine that was The Burrow, the sun peeking through the wood boards of the entrance to their home. As the light thunder of the forest above rustling to life filled the ground below Roman could hear the light murmurs of his numerous siblings beginning to wake. Again he found himself the first awake, wandering the unlit tunnels of the Burrow. It was something of a maze if you didn't know it well enough, especially when dark. Although Papa built it that way, just another precaution his late father took among many. Still, with 19 years underground Roman was all to familiar with each and every alcove The Burrow hid. He brushed the dirt off the top of his head as he marched towards the same room he had spent far to much time in since Jonah's passing. It was the only place kept in consistent candle light, despite how opposed Papa would be. He always hated waste.

As he crossed the threshold the soft candle-light illuminated the much harsher features of Roman's face, his brow and lips set in the same poised look they always were. "Hey pop." He whispered, staring at the makeshift casket sitting in the middle of the room. The flame danced and with it the shadows across the uneven surface and along the browning petals of the daisies sat upon it. "We made it another day." Roman leaned his shoulder against the shoddy wooden braces along the entrance, his head falling to rest on it as well. "The witch is still... the forest a bit less so." he said in his famously steady tone. "Olivia made these amazing mushrooms last night. Damned if I know how..." Roman paused for a moment, his gaze furthering beyond the casket, and into the ground. "Sorry for the small talk, I know you hate it. We'll get to moving you soon. Sorry we've wasted so much time. And candles" a chuckle slipped past his lips.

More dirt fell from the ceiling and on to Roman's tattered jacket, the indicator of the first patrol shaking awake. "Guess the scouts are up. Best get to the entrance." he mumbled with a spin of his heel, turning back the way he came. Out of his pocket he fetched a small, albeit loud, bell. The same Papa used to use. He breathed in deep, taking in the earthy air of the Burrow, the moisture of morning dew flooding his senses.

And so he rang the bell. "Alright everybody! Up and at em! Checklist time, you know what to do!" he bellowed. It was time for the machine get moving.

Roman's usual wake up call broke through Toby's hazy sleep. His pale, sightless eyes fluttered open to reveal... well, nothing. But that was quite usual as well, for Toby at least. The morning routine was not broken today, and he was honestly unsure if he should be grateful or just annoyed. The hunter had not been here for more than two years and already the repetition of Burrow life was getting stale. It wasn't like he wanted everyone to get attacked by some gigantic blundering beast, but he couldn't help but think sometimes even that might be better than mister "Up-and-at-em"s drill sergeant routine. Heaving a sigh, Toby swung his legs off of his bed and stretched before gathering his clothes to head to the springs. It was never a challenge to do so, considering he made sure his clothes were placed on the little rocking chair in the corner of his room every night. The chair had been there even longer than Toby had. He had never asked Papa who's it was, but kind of just assumed it was there for decoration as was the little desk and chair cattycorner to it. Not that he really cared that much.

The sound of the scouts rang out around The Burrow, urging everyone further to go ahead and start the day. A pang of worry rushed through Tobias before quickly disappearing.

'Usual routine. They'll be back.' He assured himself as he wandered out into the narrow stretch of tunnels that snaked throughout the underground. It was easy to get yourself lost if you weren't careful. He had to learn that the hard way the first few months of his arrival. Now Toby found his feet dragging him towards the springs on impulse, twisting and turning without giving it much thought. The sound of trickling water echoed into the cavern it made home to. First stepping into the water always gave the hunter shivers. It was cool, but extremely refreshing. This would be where he resided until it was time to meet up with Achilles for the hunt.

Quinn

The Doctor

As someone that had only been sleep for a total of 6 minutes, the idea of never healing Roman from any sort of ailment was a pleasant thought from the sleep deprived brain of Quinn. In all honesty she didn't have a single clue of why she should even be up at the same time as the others. Her job was more of case-by-case situation anyway outside of any additional studying she decided to do. An unholy growl escaped her lips as she hoisted herself upright while her unruly red hair stuck out in various directions and covered her face completely. If anyone were to see her now, it would be difficult to differentiate between Quinn and any of the beasts that roam the woods.

A rough hand ran across the bedside table in search of a ponytail holder to look barely presentable until she was able to head to the springs. She had always preferred the peace of soaking away her fatigue between the hours of midnight and daybreak.
''...I'm hungry but I have to prep more antidotes and numbing salve.....oooor I could go back to sleep and not deal with the usual hustle of my fellow mole people.''

Quinn toyed with that plan until she remembered the last time she had tried to sleep in only to be woken up again by Achilles belly flopping on her slumbering form and trying to send her to an early grave from the fear alone. ''Ah nevermind, I'll just give the list of materials I need to whoever's going out today.'' She left her room full of reluctance while making her way towards the medical ward to do the usual morning check ups to make sure everyone was in good health to properly do their jobs.

"Another day."
Vomit dribbled down Oz’s cheek.

He was already awake of course, and not because he was the diligent type. He had woken up several times during the night as usual, and was now hacking up what little he had eaten the day before. How many times was this now? Wasn’t it about time this place started to feel like home?

He sighed, and counted on his fingers one by one. Ah—he turned sixteen today.

Happy birthday me,” He muttered.

It had been a little over a year since he arrived. He couldn’t believe he had spent so long in this place. What would he have been doing otherwise? Would he even be alive?

The bell.

Oz gently patted his cheeks with the palms of his hands. There was no what ifs. He was here now, and he had a job to perform. People were relying on him… at least he thought so—but then again, once he started thinking about it—

Focus Oz.

Right to business.

He'd skip out on any early checkups and even food. Though he would make sure to double back when it was less occupied. The last thing he needed was more people giving him a hard time.

It was easiest to start with the general storeroom. Since it was more of a backup space the supplies didn’t tend to rotate too often. Plus it was out of the way enough that not many people came by this early. That would leave the supplies that moved around more frequently to the other Keepers.

It had taken a while for Oz to come up with this strategy but it had proved invaluable during his time here. Plus it wasn’t like he was doing anything wrong. This area had to be accounted for just like any other. The fact that it was marginally easier than—

A small clay jar hit the floor immediately separating into countless pieces.

Crap.

He instinctively glanced to each side. It was anyone’s guess if the sound would reach the rest, but he didn’t plan on sticking around to see.

What was it he even dropped? Salt? How important was that again? Actually-doesn’t matter. It was gone. Ceramic dust was already mixed with the product, so that was the end of that. He'd just have to note that it went bad. Er... did salt go bad? Whatever. He'd just put that some bugs laid eggs in it or something. Nobody would question that.

...

Oz grit his teeth. No way. Sure it sounded believable, but he didn't exactly have a great record when it came to things like this. Within the year of his stay, Oz most certainly had caused his fair share of incidents. Even if bugs had actually laid eggs in it he doubted many would take his word for it.

So instead, he inched another jar right up to the edge and carefully closed the rudimentary door behind him. That way, whoever entered afterward would almost certainly knock the other jar over. It would then mask the first jar and Oz would be entirely in the clear.

...

He planted his forehead against the cold surface of the door.

What am I even doing?

ARI
His eyes flickered open. For a few seconds, Ari had a feeling that it had happened, but his dream slowly faded away as he came to reality. He let out a sigh of relief as he sat up and started getting ready.

Lately, he'd been having a strange dream where he lost his vision. Ari had already lost it once, but thankfully his echolocation power had kept him alive. He couldn't imagine what would happen if he lost it and became weak.

Ari pushed himself out of bed and started the short trek to the entrance of the Burrow. Despite the darkness, he could practically feel every square centimeter of the walls, the boarded-up ceiling, the floor covered in footprints. Everything was crystal clear to him. A perk of having a third eye, so to speak. As he drew close to the entrance, Ari sensed the unmistakable figure of Roman and started jogging. He had evidently overslept a bit, and that was not something that was supposed to happen. Ari mumbled an ashamed passing greeting to Roman as he reached the opening and burst outside of the Burrow.

The air was crisp and clean, and a number of scents met him. Ari had a good look at some of the more interesting critters in the trees while running towards the perimeter; he'd been keeping an eye on a bird nest high in the trees where a couple of finches resided. Reminding himself of his lateness, he pumped his legs faster, on the verge of sprinting towards the perimeter.

Once he'd reached the border Ari stopped, catching his breath for a few moments. No monsters in the general area of him; that was good. Once his heart had stopped pounding and his lungs stopped being on fire, he set off at a light jog to patrol around, his senses sharp and on the lookout.
