Realistic or Modern The smell of ink and sea [Private]

Fallon Lauder was standing at the dock of the port, where she was waiting for the ship to arrive. After sabotaging the government, the girl knew that she had to flee the country immediately or the consequences would be ultimately catastrophic. Therefore, she stole all of the notes and blueprints of her inventions and she‘d packed the bare necessities and all the money she had which, admittedly was a lot since being an employee of the government payed rather well. Then, she had searched for a trading ship, since it would offer her good cover and wouldn’t be suspicious, in which she could sneak in and move to another country within two days. Of course, she knew that it was risky but she didn’t doubt that once she found a new occupation, preferably for her new home’s government she would be safe from danger.

Fallon had also made sure to protect her mom by explaining what had happened and persuading her to move to a new nation with her.It wasn’t easy, but challenge wasn’t something new to the girl. At last, her mom agreed and everything had been planned. The thing is that they would travel on different ships and dates so even if one of them was discovered, not both of them would be directly in danger. Fallon had a special soft spot for her mom and would struggle a lot if the government kidnapped her as a hostage to manipulate the engineer.

Her dad wasn’t really in danger since he spent most of his time away from home. In spite of that though Fallon had insisted on making him move too along with her and her mom. At first, he had thought what his daughter had done was absurd. However, a day and a half later he had agreed to come along with them saying that he spent most of his time away from home for his work anyway so it wouldn’t make a difference to him and that he always travelled to certain places that were actually closer to their new home so he wouldn’t have to switch jobs.

So while the girl’s mom had probably already found a new home already, Fallon was patiently waiting for a cargo ship that transferred apples to arrive at the dock where it would make a quick stop and then set out to sea again. Fallon was fiddling with a stray strand of hair that had escaped her low ponytail. Admittedly, she was nervous. She had never attempted something as dangerous as what she was doing now. What would happen if someone detected her? She had triple checked all of her stuff to make sure there were no detectors and she had found nothing. And while it seemed too good to be true she couldn’t leave any of the stuff she had packed behind. So hope for the best was the best she could do right now.

Fallon’s thoughts came to stop and were replaced by the banging of her heart which expressed the panic that flooded her at the sight of the man who was standing at the entrance of the port.He was tall, muscular and was dressed in a plain black suit. The shoulder of which was emblazoned with the government’s symbol. The man’s eyes seems to stop on the girl and despite the dark baggy clothes she was wearing that she had hoped would lend her some cover, he seemed to recognize her and started sprinting towards her.

Without wasting a second on thinking she ran as fast as her unfit body allowed her to and managed to leap into a random ship that was the nearest to her and happened to be leaving very soon, judging by the roaring engine and the smoke emanating from the funnel.

She watched the door of the ship close mere seconds before the man reached the vessel and let out a sigh of relief. She was panting as she checked for any people nearby. Luckily there was nobody to be seen so she opened the first unlocked door she found and got inside the room. It was small and seemed to be some kind of storage room, seeing some cleaning equipment occupying it. This is not going as planned Fallon thought as she closed the door behind her and sat on the floor, her heart still hammering, trying to calm down and sort out what was happening.

They were all ready to go. Everything had been loaded onto the ship, everything had been personally checked to make sure it was there. Food that would last a few months before they'd need to stop again, all sorts of mechanical supplies to keep the ship itself running. He'd checked the distilling system before he'd even thought about getting the ship ready to sail, making sure everything was in working order. The system drew water from the ocean constantly, then heated it till it evaporated, then condensed it in a colder chamber so it was fresh water. That water then collected in a large tank, ready to drink or cook with or shower. It was ingenious and had saved them many times.

But everything was ready to go. All the crew was on board, all the crew were raring and ready to go. Down on his wrist was what appeared to be a watch, but he pressed the button on the side and spoke. "All hands ready. Start the engines." Only a few moments later, the rumbling engine started to fire up, growling and roaring. He knew there'd be smoke but soon, all that was about to change.

They were on a mission. When he was a young boy, he loved to adventure and scramble around rocks, finding buried treasure. He'd sneak into the museum and gaze over all the artefacts, writing them down in his little journal. He wanted to discover something huge, something that would change the world. So when he found a piece of parchment at one museum, ripped and fraying at the edges, then found an almost identical one at another, matching the ragged ends, he'd taken pictures of both and connected them together. Then it was a few months of decoding and figuring out the language before he could even read what was going on, but eventually he deciphered it.

What he read astounded him. On a faraway island, long forgotten by modern day adventurers, hidden by cascading waves and spiked rocks, there was a island paradise. Inside it lay a volcano (one which he hoped was long extinct), but deep within, it spoke of a miraculous ore. You could burn it a thousand times and it would keep it's energy. When heated, the rock would melt down into its two parts and the energy would be spent, but once it was cooled, it joined back together and regained its energy through chemical reactions. Paired with the moss growing all around the island, the waste products that it took to melt the rock itself would be classed as null and void.

He'd thought it incredible. Which is why he'd set out on this mission. To find this ancient wonder and bring some of it back to the modern world as a new source of energy.

Fallon’s head was still spinning as she turned on a small torch she had been carrying with her so she wouldn’t have to open the actual lamp of the room she was hiding in and risk giving away her location. She had just barely escaped the grasp of one of the government’s soldier, the team of the lethal spies that served the country. She had entered a random ship. She would now be heading towards an unknown destination. Her plan was ruined. No Lauder, you don’t have the luxury of giving up.Think, think, think she scolded herself, starting to come up with a new plan.

Admittedly, Fallon hadn’t considered the possibility of a government’s soldier finding her. She had been caught up making every other arrangement and coming up with plans B and C for other possible scenarios that she had forgot to consider being discovered before touching her destination. She had been so certain everything would work out darn it. She had made sure not to leave any traces so she wouldn’t be tracked so how had the man found her? Had he installed a camera or a microphone somewhere in her house? A bug or a detector in her stuff? Whatever, it didn’t matter right now. If she hadn’t found anything when she had searched her things, she wouldn’t discover anything new now. What she needed to do now was to consider her next act.

If the vessel she had embarked was a trading ship, they would reach shore very soon and she wouldn’t have a problem. She had checked the port’s schedule to pick out her getaway and she remembered most of the ships at the port that day were merchant ships. Worst case scenario she arrives at a country on the other side of the globe, but even if that happened she could send her mom a message and take another ship from there to the county she had been planning to move to initially. If it wasn’t a trading ship and took more than a couple days to reach land though…that was a whole other story.
