"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRINNNNNNNNNNNG!" the alarm clock went off showing a digital time which read 6:35. James pressed a button on top of the clock laying still on the bed side table to signal a stop on the sounding device. He laid back flat on his bed and stretched. He then turned to his right to see a beautiful lady sleeping beside him. He brushed her jet black hair away from her face with his left hand and landed a sweet kiss on her forehead. He then wrapped his arms around her body and hugged her. James would like to set his waking time with a lot of minutes to spare so he can spend some of it just staring at his girl's sleeping face. He wouldn't like to start his day any other way. There's something in her calm and relaxed face that attracts him even more. And her pink cherry lips didn't help.
He landed another kiss on her cheek, "Good morning baby." Then he stood up. He went straight to the kitchen and prepared fried eggs with bacon and toasted some bread. He poured into cups a steaming hot serving of chocolate. He then proceeded to the bathroom. After fixing himself he went back to their bed and embraced the still sleeping girl. "Hey honey, breakfast is served."
Rebecca Newman felt his embrace and the gentle kisses that her boyfriend gave her. His gentle touch was what she craved above all else. "I love how good you are to me, James." She sat up in bed as soon as he came in, hearing the click of her door. "Now we can work on you finding a job that makes me happy." She rolled her eyes and began eating. "I'm joking. Don't hate me for that." Once she was done, Rebecca got out of bed and walked toward her closet. "I wish I didn't have to work so late. I know how much that just kills you." She found herself smirking. "Well, I guess it doesn't. After all, you're always a busy boy yourself." She took out her uniform and brought it to the bathroom, shut the door behind her, and left that absolutely gorgeous man behind in the bedroom. Once she had clothes and make up on, she opened up the door again and began curling her hair. "James, I know we've been together since I was sixteen, and I do love you, but I don't want you to be like this if we ever had a family together." Rebecca referred to his secretive job. "I want us to be able to tell each other everything." She came back and batted her brown eyes up at him. Her curls bounced as she walked. "God, I love you so much, James." Reaching her arms around his neck, she pulled him into her embrace and locked her jaws with his. "I wish I didn't have to go. I want to stay home and keep you out of trouble." Her pager started beeping. "Damn."
"What are you talking about?" his hands on her hips while she's hugging him. "You know me, this is all of me." he pulled away and stared into her eyes. "You think these eyes could hide from you?" he said leaning in for a kiss. The passionate bliss they were sharing was disrupted by a sequence of beep from her pager.
"You don't have to look out for me Agent, I can take care of myself. Who do you think is in more danger? The one who pursues killers or the one who just writes about them for the morning paper? But I wish you could just stay home so you could stay out of trouble." he held her cheek and leaned in for a kiss once more. She told him how she loved him but he could never return the words to her. It's not like he don't want to, it's more like he can't. He then pulled away and turned his back to grab his bag. He tossed the car keys to her, "Hey bring the car, you'll be late, I'll just catch a cab on the way home."
Rebecca's naturally pink cheeks shaded darker than that, as bright as a rose. "Oh, o-okay." Rebecca wasn't a crier, but she definitely wanted to now. "I love you." She whispered again, leaving her boyfriend in the room. Why didn't he ever tell her he loved her? "Is it another girl?" She froze at the door, spine tingling. "James, why can't you tell me that you love me?" She wouldn't leave without a plausible answer. "I have to know that you do. If you can't tell me that you love me, it makes me think otherwise or that you're cheating." Her fist clenched. "Do you love me?" She repeated, one foot out the door as her pager got louder. Before he could answer, she heard her pager reach maximum sound and took that as her cue to get going. "Bye, James." She drove away, breaking into tears once she was certain that no one saw her.
He held his "I love you too" so hard that he couldn't say it in front of her before she drove away. He turned his back to face the door and made sure it was locked. He hailed a cab and got into the backseat. He wasted time as he played with his phone.
Several minutes after, he reached his workplace. He paid the driver in cash of course. He never believed in credit cards, or he never wanted to use them, it's easier to trace somebody who uses digital transactions. He got into his workplace chatting with people along the way. James is a very sociable guy and easy to be with, he's got the talent to be what someone needs. That's his very gift and he uses it a lot.
He can imagine Rebecca crying, and it hurts him a lot, or at least he'd like to think he's hurt. He's trying to interpret the feeling he's having, the itch in his hands and the bubble that is growing inside his stomach. He looked around the office trying to see if anyone is paying attention to him. He got up and went to the rest room. He buried his face in his hands and trying to shake the images from his head.
-----
James took a glance on his watch and it's 4 in the afternoon he grabbed his bag and marched right out of the office. He looked at his watch once again, enough time to be away for a couple of hours and be back to his loving girlfriend. He walked around the block and to another street where he hailed a cab. "Take me to Queens." he said.
Rebecca went into the next case feeling horrible about how her boyfriend didn't seem to really love her anymore. That was just fine, actually, because Rebecca sort of had her eyes on another investigator, and needless to say, he liked her too. This was her partner. They had been working together for two years. "So, Rebecca, would you like to go out for a cup of coffee or something?" Derek Leonard asked. "Yeah. I'd like that." Rebecca asked, closing up an old homicide case. It was now late in the day. "Perfect. I'll meet you outside." Derek did just that. Within ten minutes, the two were at the coffee shop. Rebecca was having such a nice time. James never showed her this affection anymore.
James entered into a club and went straight to the bar. He watched the people around and observing each one keenly. He waved to the bartender and she got back to him with a glass of bourbon. He wrapped the glass with tissue and drank from it. He can't still shake the image of his girlfriend being saddened by his inability to word his emotions to her. It's not that he lack the gesture of love, words isn't just his language.
It was still early but the bar is slowly being cramped with people. It was 40 minutes past 6 by his clock. He looked over to his left and noticed a lady sitting alone on the corner. He stood up and grabbed his glass. She was blonde with deep dark eyes. "Hey, would you like another one?" James asked with a smile on his face. The lady replied positively all smiles. They hit it off and after 10 minutes there were laughter coming from their mouths and a little more while she was giving him pecks on the cheek. One last bottle of beer and she was dragging him to her hotel room. He kept his head low avoiding any kind of contact at all, he lowered his hat so it's covering his face.
They got up to her room. She opened the room, he was careful not to touch anything too carelessly. Prints can be incriminating most of the time. He lifted her up against the wall and kissed her by the neck, her hands travelling from his back to his head but he grabbed it quite in time before she could get to his hair. A few seconds after they were naked and found themselves under the shower head. Water is his bestfriend. It can wash away, the tears, the pain and all the evidence at the same time. A few more minutes of bliss she turned her back on him her hands up the wall and his hands travelling from her back to her neck. He grabbed her slender neck and choked her. Two minutes of force and he can see the life escaping from the girl's body. He watched her closely down to her last second. After he washed his body and the one lying motionless in front of him he noticed a scratch on his hand. He went to his bag to get a nail clipper and he cut the lady's nails. He let the water run washing away any evidence that he might have left.
He got dressed and went ahead. He looked at his watch and it's 5 minutes before nine. It was near Rebecca's office so he decided to drop by. He went and grabbed a bouquet of flowers from the shop around the corner and he sat himself on a bench in front of her office. And he decided to wait. He checked their car on the parking and it's still there.
Rebecca realized what was happening to her and quickly paid for her things and left. There was no way that she'd put her friend in danger from James if she could help it. "I will never do that again." True, she never kissed her partner or even held his hand, but, she did feel bad about everything. As she came into her police station office, Rebecca noticed her loving boyfriend. "Hello, James. Derek and I just went out for coffee." She set her bag down on her chair and went to clock out. When she came back, Rebecca was pleased to notice the flowers that James had brought. "Those are nice." Not as nice as an 'I love you', though. Rebecca walked over to him and sat down on his lap. "You just had a shower?" She had noticed that his hair was a little damp. "That's nice. Where are we going?" She believed that they had a date.
He kissed her as he gave her the flowers. "Oh yeah, remember the new clerk I talked to you about? She was very clumsy, she tripped in front of me spilling coffee all over me, she's lucky I caught her arm, or else she could have hit her head on my chair. She even scratched me on the way down." he showed her his hand.
"You couldn't have coffee inside your building? Did you really have to go out just for coffee?" he asked doubtfully. He put her down and he stood up. "Anyway, What about a movie my dear?" he bowed down to her offering his hand.
Rebecca examined James's hand. "Oh, you poor baby." She kissed his cheek, just below the ear. "That's why you should carry an extra shirt around." She got irritated when he stood up, thus forcing her off his lap. "Well, I do have coffee here, but my current case is too far away to come all the way back here just for coffee. It wasn't a big deal. I used my own money." Rebecca shrugged. When he bowed, she curtsied a little, smiling. "What movie, good sir." She took him by the hand.
He pulled her By the hand so she'd stand up. He wrapped his other free hand over her shoulder as if hugging her. "Why? Does it matter? I just want to spend my time with my beloved. " he said that with ease.
"Honey, how's work today? Worked any hard cases? " he asked casually, it's as if she wasn't working on classified information.
They were walking on the streets passing several stores with tv sets showing the news of the horrible death of a Ms. Sullington. 24, who died from manual strangulation in a hotel in Queens.
Rebecca thought that James always knew how to smooth talk people. This might have been one of those times, and she was wandering right into his trap. "I guess the movie doesn't matter, but if it's a horror flick, I'm gonna scream." She let him hold her like this.
Ms. Newman nodded. "Yeah, we just got a new one about some girl taken from a bar and killed in a hotel room or something like that." She smiled softly at him. "I can't say anymore than that."
"That's her." Rebecca pointed to the television screen. "Poor girl. Probably didn't see it coming." It showed the interview that she did just an hour ago on the case. "Come on."
"You know I love the way you scream." he said and gave her a wink with a smile. And then he kissed her head. "You know that I adore you my dear." he added.
He stopped to see the girl on the news on the TV when Rebecca pointed her out. A sense of satisfaction and bliss stirs inside his chest as he admired his work on national television. "Oh a colleague of mine said she probably knew the killer. No signs of force entry, evidence of penetration no defensive wounds." he reflected with her. He immediately turned to her when he realized a vital fact. The FBI is taking on the case, not the local police department but the FBI, they must have connected it to some other killings. "Wow, so this is a big case eh?" he asked. Though not waiting for an answer, he heeded when called. They continued walking until they reach the movie house.
"Are you in the mood for a romantic movie?" he asked as he grabbed a popcorn from the counter.
Rebecca blushed the second her boyfriend finished his sentence. She knew exactly what he was talking about. "You swore that you wouldn't talk about that in public." Well, the detective thought she knew, and the way he was winking seemed to only verify her suspicion. "Damn it! Look at me!" Rebecca grabbed his arms, staring into his eyes. "I'm not going into a movie until I hear that you love me." She heard him talk about her new case. "I'm not allowed to talk about my cases with a civilian." She hissed dangerously. Rebecca was done with his shit.
He was confronted with her flaring stare and asking him to say it. One thing that he knew from heart is that, when a gun is held into your head, you shall do anything the other person on the trigger says. He swiped her hand from his arms and held her head steady. He swiftly moved in and kissed her, deep and passionately, her eyes were closed and so are his, he pulled away for a second and whispered, "I love you Rebecca." and then kissed her again. He didn't want to, but he had no choice, with his eyes close it was easy to conceal his disagreement with his statement. And she wouldn't know.
"I know I'm sorry, but what I said is just public information." he replied and walked forward. "So, on to the movie babe? Or you wanna skip right through our climax." he asked with a smug face.
Satisfied, Rebecca followed James into the movie. Noticing his face, she knew that something about James was different. "I have no idea why I had to pry that out of you, James. You should tell me that everyday. I don't see why I stay with you." She paid for the popcorn and her drink, but not her boyfriend's. "You never tell me you love me. You're gone a lot. You don't have a job." She played with her hair during the commercial. "So, tell me why I stay."
