The Runaways (Ouroborosmedusa & Perksofbeingacactus)

Leonard was the first there, punctual as always. The thought of his twin sisters and father always made him look ever sadder than usual and he did not look excited at all! The young man- who kept on squinting at the sun's morning light- waited for his group of friends while leaning against the bus stop. He had enough money for wherever they all wished to go. Britain wasn't filled with the best sights but it sure was one mighty countries. Hopefully boredom would never come to the group. Boredom was something Leon felt daily yet it wasn't something he enjoyed that much. Leon just knew how to cope with it and he guessed that was good enough.

His eyes glared forward, adjusting the sight in front of him. He was the oldest of the group and he considered himself the wisest. Intelligence was a big thing to him like Jay but, well, he didn't really converse much with him. Not with anyone. It was raining as usual and he was donned in a jacket and some jeans. Beneath the jacket was a top his first twin sister brought him a while back. Although he was sad about leaving the group, he was excited for this new adventure. Even though he may not be the most exciting person on the go go.

Electra was running late and she was walking fast to get to the destination. She had never been a good lair, and she just left her parents with a note saying she was going on a trip. The seventeen year old had a slight brief skip in her walk: fifty percent excitement and fifty percent she was late. The bus stop was in her eye of vision and she just continued while her pumps patted against the ground. Never before had the girl worn short clothing let alone on a day with weather like this! All she wore was a black over sized jumper over some leggings that were split. It wasn't the design, it was the fact somehow they just got ripped.

Her glare was shining through and her pastel hair followed behind her as she greeted Leon. She never knew what to think of Leonard but all she knew was that until she learnt to call him Leon he could call her Elizabeth. The greeting was mutual, more Electra doing the small talk. Hoisting up a backpack upon her back she just bounced her foot against the ground while trying to whistle. It was a horrendous whistle so she stopped immediately.

Darren had arrived also, but he seemed to be the most smiley. His hand came turned into a fist pump before he requested a bro fist from everyone. The joker smiled his charmingly kind grin to the half of the group before joining in the little conversation that was already started. On his way here he went into a store and brought some sweet for everyone yet Leon told him not to open it until everyone was there. Darren, being the kind type guy, nodded towards Leonard and waited for the others. No one wanted sweety conflict on the first day of running away. It just wasn't, right? No, it just wasn't fun. Arguments were dull and caused falling outs.

"It's quite rainy isn't it?"

They had to choose a meeting place without any shelter. He chuckled slightly before using his backpack to cover his head. Hopefully someone would of been smart enough to bring an umbrella but judging that Leon didn't, the fate rested in the other clever chosen few. Upon thinking more about his group, the thought about speaking and spending time with Iris made him smile. They were a close pair and he did enjoy her company just a little more than the other members of the group.

Jay had what he believed to be a good excuse for running late. As he'd slunk out of the back door, rucksack slung over one shoulder and dressed in his usual hoodie and jeans, his father had taken a sudden and unusual interest in his whereabouts, demanding where he was going and the like. Jay had politely informed his father that it was none of his business, and since he'd never taken any interest before he could kindly fuck off. This had then spiralled into the usual shouting match, and Jay had been chased back through the house before he managed to escape, sprinting off down the road, only turning back to give his father the finger and shout, "So long, asshole!"

He was still jogging when he finally drew up to the bus stop, slightly out of breath but high on adrenaline, feeling rather pleased with himself for his parting line, albeit he wished it had been something more eloquent. Spotting three of the others already assembled, he slowed to a walk and sauntered up to them, briefly eyeing Leon - who was looking especially miserable that day - before smirking at Darren and greeting him with the usual fist pump. "My man," he said as they knocked knuckles, imitating a stereotypical 'street' accent. "Leon, always a pleasure. Electra, you are looking especially lovely today," he said more formally, greeting the other two each in turn with a small nod, his tone and smirk sardonic as he did so with Leon. "So, we figured out where we're heading to first?"

Iris arrived just seconds later, walking up behind Jay and giving him a squeeze around the waist that made him jump, before she released him and joined the group properly. "I thought you said you had yourself a plan, Burns?" She said, raising an eyebrow at him before laughing and looking to the others, giving Darren an especially warm smile because, well, he was Darren. She then looked over at Leon, the smile fading. "You've got the money, right?" She asked him, perfectly civil, but lacking the same affection she felt towards the other two males present.

She herself has a slightly less valiant reason for being late. She'd spent the night before at one of the university students' parties, and had slept over at someone else's. She thus had only half her stuff with her, and was still mildly hungover, though she was by now an expert at covering up all signs of it. Having awoken early from dehydration, she could easily have arrived on time, but doctoring her appearance from the post-party mess it had been had taken time, and thus she was second to last to arrive. Better late than never though, right?

Andrew, therefore, was the latest. He knew he was going to be the latest, and he became increasingly distressed as time went by. He was sat at the dining room table with his parents, fidgeting repeatedly as he looked between them. "Mum, please can I get down now?" He begged, his stomach in knots. Christ, he was going to run away. How could he leave his parents behind, to go off with some people he didn't even know that well, who still all scared him a bit?

"Not until you've finished your meal," his mother said, nodding at his half finished lunch. He knew why she was paranoid about him eating, but this time his lack of an appetite had nothing to do with that. The stress of what was coming had put him right off of food and left him feeling slightly sick. With a deep sense of impending room, he started forking the rest of his scrambled eggs into his mouth, struggling to swallow.

Ten minutes later and he was involuntarily regurgitating the contents into the toilet bowel, unable to keep it down from nerves. His mother was on the phone to his counsellor, asking for advise and such, and his father had vanished, as he always did during those moments of tension. Andrew thus seized the opportunity to stand, wipe the back of his mouth, grab his packed bags from beside the front door and escape out of it. There was already a letter under his pillow of apology and explanation to his parents, and everything had been prepared. He had perhaps brought too much stuff, carrying two bags - one with clothes, one with essentials like a first aid kit, sun tan lotion, basic cooking equipment, lighter fluid, and so on - and an umbrella, and it made it a struggle to run to make up for lost time.

Half an hour late, he eventually reached the bus stop, flushed red in the face from struggling to make it on time and from embarrassment. "Sorry I'm late," he mumbled as he approached the group, distracting himself with opening the umbrella as it had started to rain.

"Hello all! Oh is that right Burny?"

Darren spoke upon hearing Iris. Burns never quite fitted him and, since they were pretty close as buddies, the name seemed to belittle him in a friendly way. Darren crossed his arms with a wide smirk that etched on his lips. Once his eyes were seeing Iris, his smirk turned into a heart warming smile before he greeted her with a tilt of a head and muttered some words to her. Probably a pick-up line which he tried to make a joke out of. Yet, if it was about beauty, it sure wouldn't be a beauty. Darren tried to keep his feelings to himself before finally sharing out the sweets to everyone, even miserable Leonard.

After the sweets were handed out he kept the packet and grabbed aloud before pushing them into his mouth and chewing the contents.

"Mmm, quite nice actually. They were on offer."

His bag had fallen off his back and, most likely meaning it had nothing in it if a particularly meaning, he left it there and continued to smile at everyone in his usual joking manner.

After the chewing of sweets he re-rolled the sweets up before actually picking up his bag and stuffing them in there. That was until he spotted Drew with the umbrella.

"Ahhh thank you!"

He mimicked worshipping the guy who was clever enough to bring an umbrella.

Electra glared with her blue storm like eyes and rolled her eyes with a smirk at Jay. Burns wasn't a suitable nickname to call anyone at all in her eyes. Well, she did hate burning. She mimicked blowing a kiss before sarcastically bashing her eyelids.

"One with words, so beautiful."

Electra noticed the others and forced out a smile while seeing them. It wasn't because she didn't want to smile it's just they never came to her easily.

She watched the group as she also got out her money. It may have been stupid to have borrowed money from her dads but they would need it. There was enough to get everyone food for a week, if they didn't spend it all on something though. The girl took her share of the sweets and then took her time in chewing them. It was a habit to make the most of what little food she had, even though she had been offered loads. A lot like Andy in that sense. Electra smiled at both Iris and Andy with a wave before pulling the sleeves on her sweater down to keep her warm against the pounding rain.

Why was such, pouring and horrid (to some) rain always poetic? She never knew. Poems were always confusing her.

Leon didn't know why he was here, was he just there so that everyone could use him as a one way bank? The glare he received from Burns seemed sadistic yet he just didn't bother to mention anything about it. His hand reached into his pocket upon hearing Iris and he threw it to her. Leonard hoped it didn't seem to rude, how he just threw it across, but he didn't have a care for money.

"What's mine is your's..."

Silence always followed behind all of his one liners. He was now no longer leaning against the wall and his eyes just greeted people also.

It was lucky Leon was wearing a jacket also, a warm jacket that looked much like a trench coat. His teeth were firmly clasped together before he too took a handful of sweets and began to pick at them. Brought up to know manners, Leon kept his mouth shut while he chewed the food before swallowing it. Soon there was no sweets left and his hands now latched onto a large bag that contained many things that Leonard deemed as needed. Those being: Books, various beanies and pictures of his family. He was trying to forget about them yet he still wanted to have something of them.

"Well, Darren-y," Jay said with a cocky grin, leaning on his best friend's shoulder in a patronising but friendly manner, using his other hand to make foppish hand gestures. "I had myself two ideas whilst contemplating our grand escape from this hell hole, both of which Iris thinks are equally idiotic-"

"They both sound like something out of a bad novel about self-discovery," Iris interjected, giving Darren an amused, intimate smirk.

"Way I see it, we have two options," Jay said, pointedly ignoring her aside from giving her a one-fingered salute. "We can either go to the big city to pursue our fortunes, or go get in touch with our 'true selves' but returning to mother nature and seeing how we fare there. Because, if I'm going to be honest, to do anything else and in between would simply be half-assed, and I want to do this sucking the marrow out of life thing properly. I'm not saying we have to stay at one forever, what I'm saying is we need to hurry up and go to an extreme in life. I am bored to the teeth of this piss-hole of a town."

Leaving Darren's shoulder behind and helping himself to a couple sweets, he practically inhaled them and, after a moment of chewing, continued. "So, I say we put it to a vote. Charles Dickens big city adventures, or a walk on the wild side with mother nature. What's it to be, gang? I'm personally team city myself."

"I like how you're assuming we all already agree with your grand 'two extremes' plan," Iris said dryly, rolling her eyes and helping herself to a couple sweets, giving Darren a brief smile in thanks. She was rather looking forward to the prospect of running away with him as much as she was the rest of them put together, because really, he was the only person in this whole town who didn't get on her nerves at times. "If we are doing this stupid vote, however, mine's with the country. Getting away from people would be nice for a bit. You guys being the exception, of course. Oh, and cheers Leon," she added as she caught the money he threw her, tucking it into her carry on bag. Whilst they might not always get on at times, she at least appreciated that he always seemed willing to help out, and she knew she owed him for this.

Awaiting the others to respond to Jay's madness, Iris worked on smoothing her clothes, which were still creased from last night's events. They were hardly suited to the day's weather, consisting of a scanty blue tank top and white short shorts, coupled with a pair of heels that really didn't look like countryside material, but she'd nicked the trainers of the guy she'd been sleeping over with, and thankfully her big feet meant they fit. It was the least her companion from the previous evening could do, considering some of the stuff he'd tried to pull. Urgh. People in this place could be so sick sometimes.

Sniffing, feeling like she had a cold coming on -fantastic - she looked around at the other group members, Leon's scowl more prominent than ever. She hoped it was the weather that had disgruntled him, not her show of gratitude for his money.

Andrew meanwhile was trying to work out whether he should speak, or wait for the others to cast their votes, looking between all of them to try and gauge the answer. He took one of the offered sweets, dissected it into four pieces, and then popped them in one by one, keeping quiet. When Darren started dicking around and pretending to worship him he grinned nervously, flushing on automatic at the focus of attention, laughing. He thus held out the umbrella so that everyone in the group was at least partially sheltered, looking round to check no one had an unfair share of the dry.

"I'd prefer the countryside..." he said, almost inaudibly, though he said so with a small smile. Whilst what they were doing still terrified him in how rebellious it was, he was glad to finally be part of a group, and one so entertaining at that. Even Leonard with his grouchy expression seemed like an essential piece, and that connection left a faint smile permanently on Andrew's expression as he awaited the answer of the others.

Darren watched his buddy Burns with a large smirk before listening Iris'. He nodded his head as an acknowledgement before biting his lip and thinking about the matter at hands. Hmm, it was one big toughie. Darren began to stroke his imaginary beard while his friend leaned against him. Iris spoke a valid and reasonable point for the wild. Oh and armed with sweets and the limited food they probably already had, who wouldn't want to risk everything like that? And, you never know, there might be bears that you can hug in the woods nearby or something?! Maybe it isn't that good but you know, always look on the bright side!

"I'm with darlin' Iris on this one. Although we're in shitty weather, the sun is still smiling down on us... Did anyone being gum? I'm craving it right now. It's like I have a period or something, I just really need something sweet..."

After speaking his side of the argument, he had to bring in a useless joke didn't he? Just for the actual hell of it. Baring yet another toothy grin, his eyes widened at everyone with utter hope. The young boy was actually craving gun and he would love for it to be apple flavour. Yeah, he was veryyyy picky with his gum. Having one second of boredom, he blinked and then returned to the world of fun and games. Running away wasn't actually fun and games but it was in Darren's eyes... And, hopefully it wouldn't be long term.

He wasn't starring or anything but the lad spotted Iris' not so practical clothing and he chuckled a silent laugh to himself before remembering he had packed a spare jacket. It may not have been the prettiest of items and of course it wasn't at the height of fashion yet it could do its purpose. Darren knew to be a bit more, caring as such to Iris. The gentleman instincts when he liked someone were always like that. So, without bringing much attention to them both, he mouthed some words again. Them words being; "Need a coat? You may get wet!"

And at that moment Darren knew, he fucked up with the wording.

Electra rolled his eyes at Darren, how could he always be so upbeat?

"Jeez, how come they haven't checked you for drugs? And no, there's no gum."

The voice was condescending and all she received was a large grin from the energetic male bunny. She rolled her eyes once again before just nodding her head.

"Fine, let's go with that. 'Get in touch with our true selves'... More like who will get themselves' killed first."

The last bit was muttered and mumbled to herself before she posed off of a second forced smile. Her eyes then trailed over to the more quiet members of the group; Leonard and Andrew.

It wasn't a bad thing to be quiet. In fact, to Electra, sometimes it just helped you survive a little longer than the loud ones. She had noticed Iris' shoes- even though Electra wasn't the most girly of girls she did like shoes- and it made her smile a little wider.

"Nice shoes."

She directed the compliment to the other female of the group before returning to her glare that battled between Leon and Andrew. The girl wore her fake smile again, it was considered her normal one.

Leonard just agreed with a nod and a huff before looking at a smiling Andrew. That boy was a wonder to him still and he always seemed to be so, clumsy and embarrassed. Maybe the first trait leaded to the emotion? Most likely according to Leon. It was the most logical of answers anyways. The new legal adult just forced out a very strained smile that looked so out of place it made him look as if he was in utter agony.

"I like that plan. But we will need to find shelter, and a place away from animals and insects and a place to rest and-"

Some rambling went on but it kept on coming back to insects. It was clear Leonard hated the things yet he had always kept that to himself and he tried to hide it with his other questions that had a certain logical meaning for being asked.

Skeptical yet excited, Leon was secretly glad that he had left his home of homophobic family for a group that really didn't give a shite about anything. Well, due to the fact they all were different and diverse in their own ways, that most of logically meant they enjoyed everyone's company? Or, there was secret clashing couples and enemies in this closely knit runaways?

Grinning at being called darling, Iris laughed at his slightly odd, but endearing sense of humour, and then wished she'd had the smarts to bring apple flavoured chewing gum, is such a thing existed. "I've got mint...?" She offered hesitantly, glad for her standard travel kit, which was comprised of make up, a nail file, pepper spray, gum - for fresh minty breath -, and a compact mirror. She fished out the promised gum in offer, offering it to him, before taking the coat with grateful enthusiasm. "Oh god yes, I'm fucking freezing my ass off here. Darren, you are truly a life saviour."

"If you two are quite done flirting," Jay said airily from beside her, earning a hard elbow to the rib cage and a "Shush you." from Iris. She wriggled into the coat, which was oversized, but thankfully warm and extremely comforting amongst the rain and future unknown. After giving Darren's forearm a gentle squeeze to make sure he knew that she appreciated it, she glanced back at Electra, raising her eyebrow at her shoe comment. Sure, Iris liked the girl, and she appreciated compliments - who didn't- it was just that... well, Iris hated the stereotype of girls being bitchy to one another, but Iris couldn't help feeling territorial around the only other girl in the group. What could she say, like Darren, sometimes she could be a bit of an attention whore.

"Thanks, though they're hardly getting in touch with mother nature and killing ourselves proof," she responded with a smirk, proceeding to slip the heels off and exchange them for the pair of trainers, daintily changing as best as she could in the middle of a pavement, during a downpour.

"So it's decided then," Jay said, looking round at their team mates. "Countryside it is. And I think we can all guess who's going to be the one who offs themselves first," he said jokingly, although there was the slightest sly edge to his voice as he glanced over at Leonard. A small smile formed upon Jay's lips, and he leant over slightly in Darren's direction and whispered. "Okay prankster, you want to prove yourself? I set thee the challenge of putting bugs on old frowny face over there when he's sleeping. He sure seems mighty cautious of them for one so stoic..."

He then straightened to refrain from appearing suspicious and went to check the bus times. "Well, it say's here there's a bus coming in ten minutes that stops in the middle of the forest by Dartmoor so... that's about as rural, in touch with mother nature as you can get," he suggested, tapping his finger against the sign before turning back to look at the group for further guidance. "A couple of shetland ponies sound right up everyone's street?"

Andrew merely nodded, happy to go along with whatever the group felt was a good idea, trusting them a lot more than he perhaps should have. They all seemed so capable though, so confident in themselves; he couldn't help but believe it was for a good reason. "I brought insect repellant and mosquito nets," he said helpfully when Leonard started rambling about insects... not that he wanted to imply that Leonard was afraid of them or anything but... flushing red, Andrew realised that perhaps he'd made a bad choice in speaking out and immediately avoided eye contact with the grumpier of the group, looking over at Electra for guidance.

She seemed as sarcastic and calm as ever, and he tried to emulate that, glancing back at the others and trying to seem confident.

Darren smiled a large grin much like a cat's when Iris took the coat and in exchange have some gum. Of course, being the laughing creator and provider, he had to add a joke in while chewing the gum.

"I give you a coat and you repay me with shite gum? Thanks a lot Iris, true friendship there!-"

He was soon cut off by Jay who had pointed out the light hearted flirting.

"Shut up Burny. Just because you're jealous that you haven't got my body."

Darren winked at him and posed a kinky stereotypical slut pose before stopping and just nodding in agreement.

"Ponies? I bagsy Shadowbang..... Fang. I meant fang."

That wasn't actually a joke, he did actually muck that reference up. Sometimes laughter just was directed at him, not with him. After running a single hand along his hair he realised there was a puddle by the bus area. Not the best place to stand also. His thoughts were soon stopped after hearing Jay pose a proposal. Darren bit his lip as the rain continued and he just smirked at his close buddy before eyeing up Leonard.

"Sure thing. Think of anymore, let the king of completing dares know!"

His right eye immediately battled its way down into a wink and he just walked around nodding his head with the group.

It was clear Leon didn't enjoy the things yet it couldn't have been a real fear right? Some people in the group had bigger fears like small spaces, fire, things like that! Bugs to the old grump wouldn't cause anything but laughter and smiles to the group. Maybe big, old and scary Leonard would actually crack a grin for a change. That surely would be a miracle. Upon hearing Andrew speak, he raised an eyebrow at his slightly scarred expression. The two of them got on fine but, the poor lad always seemed so... Not relaxed?

Leonard burned a red hue but being the young and intelligent man he was he just brushed aside what Andrew said with what seemed to be an insult/complaint.

"Why? Do you not like bugs?"

That was the thing with Leon though, his bravery was actually him being a coward. He could twist words and make them seem different and nothing ever really worked out for him so why not turn it on others? After speaking he got a long state from Electra known as the death glare. Something that he saw often when he twisted words. He returned the glare before just crossing his arms and leaning against the bus stop area once again.

At least it was rainy and sunny... Hopefully the woods wouldn't be wriggling with insects that enjoyed the damp surfaces! Or, wood spiders. A tremble shivered its way on the outside of Leonard before he got it under control and began to think about something else. Rainbows? Nope. Dolphins? Nope. Nothing pretty to the mainstream really made its way into his head unless it was something scientific and logical. There was a few things he did enjoy that were rather popular but no one seems to care really so what's the point in speaking?

Electra turned her glare away before speaking.

"No, I asked him to bring it. Because I loathe the bugs. Thanks Andrew."

She walked over to him and patted his shoulder before making eye contact with him. The girl, whenever seeing him, always felt sympathy. That was her a couple of years ago. So shy and willing to do what the group wanted... Maybe with this trip he would become more independent?

Being small wasn't the best gene to have yet she casually scooted beside him and waited under the umbrella.

"Do you mind? Rain doesn't like my pastel hair. It makes it frizzy."

Once again, her normal force of a smile was showing. It always burnt her cheeks and caused them to ache for a very long while. She needed to master how to smile...
