This RP will follow the lives of a rich and powerful organised crime family residing in Queens, NYC. With the ageing Russo Family patriarch rumoured to be stepping down in the coming years, attention has turned to who will replace him in the family business. Between his children and trusted underboss, any one of them could take his place. The challenge is to receive both his recommendation and the support of most others within the organisation.

This RP will be primarily driven by relationships and drama within the family, their highest employees, as well as friends and significant associates. As well as the ruthless and fiery tension amongst those closest to each other, I will also throw in outside threats and challenges from rival gangs, law enforcement, and others set to make life even more complicated for our characters. Let's make this is dramatic and fiery as we can!

Well-read to the point it is uncomfortable to hold a conversation with him. Intimidatingly intelligent - not all knowing - but curious. Johnny's never been more than a lousy shot, but he's nothing to grin over in a close fight.

Likes:
Philosophy, though ancient Greek revivalists make his head hurt. Book collecting. Good leather.

Dislikes:
Being talked to in the evenings. Smug nihilists. Finds impressionism not that impressive, after all. Could revive Edgar Degas just to kill him again.

Personality:
During the year and a half that America bled the fronts in the Great War, in the mud stagnant with disease and oil, Johnny suffered a shot so brutal that they made him a grave in advance.

It burst through his stomach and between his lungs and the nurses' hands were stained in rivulets like fat leeches before they even got his clothes off. Enemy fire. He went out cover and had a soldier already waiting for him. If that wouldn't have killed him, the inflammation would have; they could string his flesh back together, but no help for shock. For weeks he blundered through hellish fever, his face boiling like white iron, laid up on soaked sheets like a martyr twisting his face up to Heaven. Pale, then pink-faced. Alive and dead. The pain that he felt he doesn't remember, with all the morphine. His comrades told him later that he twitched like a dog.

He had been decently young at that time. Young enough to never think he could die. And when Johnny did recover, by God's mercy or humor, there was something left on the surgery floor that he never grew back.

Johnny is both grave-cold and easily moved. Uncaring and stupidly compassionate. He feels nothing until he does, and he's really not a good person. He is just not a bad one, either.

Self-serving, in service of things greater than himself, loyal but not parasitic. In another life he could have been a note-worthy intellectual, if his stiffness and quiet judgement of those around him didn't make him so damningly unlikeable. His passion is not the kind sort and most of his pride seems to come out of meaningless arguments over nuance. He likes to scoff to himself. He never really smiles. There are books that Johnny thinks he is the angel protector of, and that no other mortal mind will ever quite understand it like him. But just so tolerable attitude aside, Johnny is smart. He is terrified to die. He knows glory is a passing chance and he thinks it is the only thing that makes it worth to live.

History:
- Johnny only really thinks about his childhood when prompted. He remembers his earliest years as a fish's eye of sodden dark green gardens, singing Christmas dinners, hiding out under the grand stairwell and pressing his hands to the polished wooden floors. Having no siblings meant there was no competition for attention, effort, investment; Johnny showed to be a bright, preoccupied child.

- His father's temper beat out in Johnny's quick competitive streak. He threw himself into boxing and mathematics, composition and philosophy. Where weaker, pale-faced children fell out like mayflies, Johnny excelled; by kick and tooth, if need be. By his teenage years he had been rubbing elbows with the New York aristocracy, with sons of men whose ancestors washed out on the Americas centuries ago. There is photography of him from these times, stood by grinning heirs, terrible like apes showing teeth; and then Johnny, rifle in hand in the forests of Upstate, a glint in his eyes. Scowling at nothing in particular, severe and serious even at sixteen. Whatever damned ambition sat in Patrick and Michael Harrington settled in him, too.

- Johnny had never stepped a toe on Ireland, but his ancestry is something his friends never really forgave him for. And anyway, the Harringtons have not been rich enough for long enough to be accepted into the close knit ballrooms of WASPs. The only thing that kept the comments from coming seemed to be that he is a cousin of the Russo's. That got him tight, nervous smiles.

- That particular seed of resentment never got quite stomped out. Johnny is loyal to his family, but his goals, his devotion, lies to the Harringtons. Perhaps that's where the rivalry between Johnny and his cousins was raised.

- University turned him murderous with disappointment. Where Johnny expected to find a goal, he found a hole in the shape of art. He did not follow into construction like he had told himself he would, and he paid the price for it dearly in his own peace of mind. But there is money to be found in art; anything that is considered crude, primal is eventually vomited out into the laps of the rich, and they don't even notice that it reeks. Johnny cultivated a fine eye for it and carved himself a place in the corpse of New York City.

Relationships:
Michael and Elizabeth Harrington. Parents. Honor thy mother and father. Whatever harshness Patrick Harrington beat into Michael, he spared Johnny the worst of it; and for that, Johnny never strayed far from their lives.

Dante and Margaret Russo. Uncle and aunt.

Benjamin Russo. Paternal cousin. The bullet lodged in Johnny's side; it bites and throbs, but he refuses to remove it, knowing it is the only thing keeping him from bleeding out.

Magdalena 'Maggie' Russo. Benjamin's daughter. He holds polite affection for her and looks over Magdalena's shoulder for her, but Johnny won't be trusting her with any secrets yet.

Along these lines, he's also an excellent liar with the acting chops and improvisational skill to pull off the lies. He's not much of a fighter or a shooter (something that he relies on others for), but he does have the reflexes to keep himself safe when things get hairy.

Personality:
Margaret throws herself into the world as who she thinks she is supposed to be, rather than what she thinks must be herself.

She is at that junction of life where she is wrong. Where, somewhere along her creation, there must have been a slip of fate's hand or a glitch in biology. Perhaps she had been wrangled underwater too long by some sinister maid and her family pitied her enough to never tell her. She is nonsensical, those half-born clay monsters that shamble through myths, a starlette made for the dying limelight. She is an awful, iredeemable soul, second only to Cain that first lied to God; she is the most intelligent, a true genius of her time. All these monsters and angels live inside of Magdalena, tying her psyche into knots.

In truth, she is soft-spoken, a bit easily irritated and still lives with her family, because the summer she turned eighteen the world seemed once a stranger to her.

What was once a fourteen-year old that took care to apply her roque twice and argued with every adult around her turned into a confused, slightly frazzled adult. Her school gaggle of a dozen rights slowly trickled into the three friends that she walks the park with. Whatever new existence Magdalena anticipated after her debutancy, she did not find it - and for two summers she has been at home, doing quite nothing at all. She sits in the garden to watch the birds. She optimictically picks up new books that end up gutted and abandoned on the sofa. She sits in the shower, eyes cast, head devoid of thought. Magdalena can't stop wasting time and she is very, very afraid.

Time trickles into the heiresses she knows pushing diamonds in her eyes, with strange men on their arm that they coo over like doves. Others cast out boats for Europe to go on tours. Her family affords her a luxury most women can't even brush past, and that it so simply exist without the threat of marriage or work suffocating her like an unwanted babe.

For that, she sticks close to them. Magdalena understands crime in ideas and closed casket funerals; but it's not too late for her to step in closer.

History:
- Born to Rosemary and Benjamin Russo as their first child. Her life from the beginning was the Elysian fields, all foggy and loved, a dozen faces swirling over her head. She would sit on her mother's wide skirts, a sweetened spoon in her mouth, or grab at her father's rough hand. As a child she never thought it was possible to lose anything at all. In school she was talkative and transient, too distracted to ever fully succeed. It embarrasses her now, to think about it; but it made her popular among other talkative, distracted girls.

- She never saw her mother's dead body. It is for the best. The years afterwards were strangling enough as it is, her father red-eyed from lack of sleep and pain. What Magdalena understood as life has been spat on and buried in the backyard, with not even a grave stone to mark it. Rosemary became a topic that everyone avoided like an open secret. That might have made it worse in all, that she was not allowed to put it into words; Magdalena ran away twice, screamed like an animal gone mad, avoided hands and familiar faces where she found them. In those years she felt as though her life has been replaced by a fake, with all what made it right before being reproduced to be uncomfortable and awful.

- One can only mourn so long. At one point you have to stop cradling your own hatred; and Magdalena, exhausted as she was, did hope for a better relationship with her family again. She's no longer raging war on her father and has buried the rage she held, along with the memory of Rosemary.

Relationships:
Benjamin Russo. Father. Even God killed his own Son. Benjamin has done less to her and Magdalena struggles to remember what made her so mad in the first place.

Johnny Harrington. Relative. She does like him. Truly. But Magdalena blames him for ruining her life when he thoughtlessly lent her an edition of The Brothers Karamazov.
