Bear in mind that this will be an alternate universe. We can alter names for the sake of respect to the British Royal family. But I wanted to use real locations and factual lines of succession. The rest … is Hollywood.
You are an illegitimate Countess of Essex. Your father is a Prince of England, Earl of Wessex and 11th in the line of succession. Your mother is a British commoner. During a stay in America the Prince got drunk and had a liaison with your mother. He had known your mother well before he had been married and the feelings had still been there. But they both knew it was a mistake. The incident would have been a scandal had it got out.
Unfortunately their infidelity had consequences - you. Your mother agreed it should be kept quiet. So a story was concocted about a father who had been a British Royal Marine. It was a half truth. But she never married. Instead she moved to America where she had planned to start a new life and never have to reveal the truth. But things don’t always go as planned.
This past year your mother died. (Up to you how.) All these years, your father kept tabs on you. When news of your mother’s death reached him, he decided to reach out to you. Under the story of your mother having been a college friend you have been brought back as a Ward to the Prince. I do recommend your character be in her teens. The Prince’s children are ages 16 and 12 (daughter and son). As to why a royal prince would make you his ward, you can only guess.
You father was born Mar 10, 1964. In 2020 he will be 56 years old.

You can come up with a pic for your mother. But remember, she would likely look like something suitable for a member of the royal family to get involved with, not a scandal waiting to happen.
