Just to get the imagery right for people, I envisioned the stone floor was only about a meter or so down, enough to have the broken wood still pressing into Thaddeus and holding his body still, so he's effectively lying in a meter deep hole, his legs are pinned but his head and neck are still free, he can thrash his head in a pretty wide arc. ^^
