The nightmare

There was that dream again. That unsettling nightmare had happened almost every night. They stood there, just the two of them. Weapons at hand, standing side by side in the heat of battle. And just ahead was that shadowy figure. It lingered over the realm, swallowed the world in its darkness. it was now that they had to choose, either fight or run. There was no backing out now. It was only a matter of time before the darkness would swallow their entire world, and they couldn't allow that to happen. As the battle stared, the monster seemed to become more powerful. but they couldn't back down now, not when victory was so close. They fought harder, trying to affect their target by any means possible. But of course before the monster could be stopped, blackness surrounded them, engulfing them into nothingness.

The boy awoke from his nightmare, sweat pooling from his brow as he tried to make out what this was all about. This dream, he'd been having it every night for the last few months. The same scenario, the same monster, the same partner in battle. It was every bit as frightful as it was exciting, and a part of him wanted to know and understand the reasoning behind all this. But there couldn't be a meaning. It was only a dream, right? He groaned and pulled himself out of bed, got dressed and ready for the day, and then made his way outside of his home into the city.

A girl yawned into the palm of her hand as she made her way through the early morning market streets. It was still early enough that there wasn't a terrible amount of people out. It was mainly just the shop keepers, getting ready to open for the day. It was good that the streets were uncrowded, as the girl was hardly paying attention to where she was going. The sleep had still not left her eyes, and she was preoccupied by the thought of a dream she had had last night. It was the exact same dream she had been having every night for the past month. I disturbing vision of a battle between a shadowy beast and her partner and herself. She would have liked to have shaken it off as some meaningless night-fancy, but she had been raised around the idea that dreams held deeper meanings. So... what did this one mean? Surely, she wouldn't go to battle. She was merely a baker, not even close to a warrior. She was a skilled archer by hobby, but would never dream of using that skill in a true fight. It had to mean something else...

She found her shop/home and began the process of opening up. She had left early to purchase more flower, and was now ready for the day. By the time she had finished setting up, the streets were filling fast as the town came alive. She put a smile on her face for her customers, even though the dream remained, nagging at the back of her mind.
