Realistic or Modern The Network Bestiary - Lore and Monsters

ItcamefromtheVoid

Meta-Magic Eight Ball
Sorry for the Delay I know this is what you've all been waiting for most likely but the wait is over this is the official Network Bestiary. Where we will keep all the lore of the monsters we will be hunting.
But first on the long list of lore to get finished at the top is the Network itself.

The Network dates back to 1936 when the initial classified investigation was done on a creature known as the Beast of Bray Road. What was first thought to be a monster turned out to be a human with a genetic mutation we now call Lycanthropy. The Network was formed once it was understood that Lycanthropy was not something that could be controlled but rather an ailment and humans started treating as an illness rather than a monster to be exterminated. Though even in that time we were very ignorant to the truth. From 1936 to 1970 the Network Exclusively hunted werewolves and other monsters to the brink. In 1970 the Pack treaty was formed this was an agreement between the Network and the packs that were more interested in finding a cure to the condition rather than becoming enemies in a war. Just look for this symbol and you'll know.

The Pack Treaty is as follows

Pack Treaty
1a. The Network hereby takes over all hunting authority over werewolf fugitives that break the law of killing humans outside the realm of self defense. Should a human be killed in a werewolf attack. The Network reserves all rights to conduct a separate investigation into the attack outside of the Pack justice system. While maintaining Pack independence in the event that the parties involved do find the defendant guilty the Pack may punish the defendant using their own form of justice. The Network shall only interfere when the pack protects said fugitives.
1b. The Network hereby takes all responsibility for Poachers. Whereas “Poachers” Are defined as hunters that are hunting werewolves outside the authority of the Network. Poachers will be dealt with using extreme prejudice for violating the Pack Treaty. In the event that a poacher is caught within Pack Territories are subject to the pack justice system. Should the Poachers be released they will be prosecuted by The Network.
2. While the purpose of the Network is to help the Packs integrate into society as citizens, if the Packs choose to remain as sovereign entities then Pack affairs must not affect those of the human affairs. Thus in the same respect for the packs Sovereignty Human affairs will have no involvement with the pack. Aside from federal votes that all members of society have the right to do.
3. The Network existing as a clandestine entity is not allowed to encroach on Pack Territory. In an effort to prevent accidental trespassing all marked trails within public areas shall remain public. Packs must provide assistance in the event a civilian is lost within pack territory. This law does not protect Poachers or Hunters of the Network that have disobeyed Pack Treaty laws. In the event of a Lost Hiker. The Network will contact the Pack in which the hiker is lost to communicate that The Lost Hiker is within the specific Territory.

Coming into the modern era the Network has grown into a social communication system that helps werewolves find lost packs and has many assets into researching a way to cure Lycanthropy. There hasn't been any progress in this feat though we come closer with treatments such as the antigen Luna. Which has actually helped those who use it as a treatment method completely nullify the transformations during the full moon with regular doses. And with advancements it comes in pill form to be easily disguised as a regular medication.

So here is what we know about Lycanthropy.

Lycanthropy is a genetic mutation within the human species that comes in one of two forms depending on the person's individual DNA though we are not entirely sure how it will manifest we do know that it manifests as either A-type or B-type.

A-types, or Alpha types are your traditional wolfman stories bipedal beasts that range from 7 to 9 feet tall human like features but mainly wolf. These types are usually more aggressive and can change between forms at will. They are arguably the most dangerous type of werewolves. based on their physical attributes. Though the transformation can be painful if forced once there has been enough practice some can change almost instantly.

B-types, or Beta types are more traditional rougarou they transform into something comparable to a Dire Wolf. These types are quadruped. Often making up the highest numbers of the pack the Beta types are wolves that are 8 to 10 feet long stand 5 feet at the shoulders sometimes 6 feet if you include the neck and head. These Lycanthropes are forced to change every full moon and cannot change at will the transformation is painful. In some cases the transformation can stop and a beta type could be caught mid transformation, these are the cases of the dogmen in michigan. Once the mutation has reached this point it is often untreatable. Though it is rare that cases reach this degree of mutation.

Werewolves
A brief history on Werewolves in America
Before the Salem witch trials on America, in Europe they had werewolf trials. Hans Graff, patriarch of the first werewolf pack in North America. Hans was born in Switzerland 1661. In the height of werewolf prejudice the Graf family fled to Alsace for sanctuary. Then later near 1700 they emigrated to Pennsylvania. Becoming one of the first werewolf packs in North America.

In 1704, Hans purchased 84 acres from from one Jan Krey, March 27. 14 years later Hans and his pack moved further west settling in Lampster and eventually in what is modern day Groffdale. where he warranted 1419 acres of land. October 4th, 1718. Later patented as the first werewolf sanctuary in America, November 18, 1737.

During this time wolves were being hunted with extreme prejudice in Pennsylvania. During this open season werewolves were discovered and hunted just as brusquely. In 1746 Hans Graf was hunted and killed. displacing his pack across Pennsylvania. Later in the 1800's before the official founding of the Network Han's Graf's descendants were hunted down and killed.

Today it is protected by pack lands and while no documented deaths have officially occurred in performing the walk around the cemetery 7 times like the legend suggests. It is recommended that you let those buried in the cemetery rest in peace. As a pack in the area protects the cemetery from any would be grave robbers.

Vampires
Vampires
What do you know about vampires? Probably that they are supernatural undead creatures of the night feeding off the blood of the living. And up until about 20 years ago, you would be right. In fact those of us at the Network thought the same thing until we discovered they are simply much more complex that such stories. To see this we turn to the only other mammal known for drinking blood. The vampire bat. Like the Chupacabra the vampire bat drinks the blood of other animals as a diet. Strangely enough Vampires or Desmodus Sapien have very much in common with the vampire bat. Vampires do not drink the blood of a victim with such vicious tactics as ripping throats out. Though there have been some cases. Most use their sharper incisor teeth to puncture arteries. With their anticoagulant saliva they can suck the blood from these puncture wounds with relative ease. Granted the host is still alive after the vampire bites them they will stop bleeding pretty quickly and the wounds will heal within a few days.

The reason there is so much superstition within the vampire lores that we hear and take for granted is vampires were not only afraid of human mobs they also needed humans to survive. Because eating food does not give a vampire the needed nutrients to survive. This is part of how they evolved. They have better eyesight, hearing, smell, stronger and faster muscles. But their digestive systems cannot process solid food as well as humans and their sense of taste is diminished. This is because when your meal comes from the blood of another living creature then you don't need to taste.

Wendigos
Wendigos or Windigos depending on which part of North America you come from are an interesting bunch. Tales from Native American tribes describe them as both spirits and creatures that exist within the forests and attack those that are isolated. Now over the years The Network has found a few things out about these creatures. One of them being yes they were all once human. How they came to be the form of such monsters is a mystery we are still trying to solve. However, we do know how they reproduce if you would like to call it that.
You see Wendigos actually kidnap at least one person from a group if they are lucky enough to catch a group. Then they will proceed to turn them into a Wendigo by whatever weird mutation they have. It's never been studied on how these creatures replicate themselves. But Wendigos have the unique ability to produce human voices in distress. Luring their prey into a place where they can pounce on their kill. This is why we classify them as imitators.
